Skin penetration of infective hookworm larvae. I. The path of migration of infective larvae of Ancylostoma braziliense in canine skin.

Migratory behaviour of Ancylostoma braziliense was studied in relation to the structure of the skin in dogs after primary infections. Data were obtained studying serial sections of lateral skin areas 6 mm in diameter, which had been exposed to larvae. The sections were stained either with Harris' haematoxylin and eosin or with P.A.S. or as outlined by Crossmon. Most of the larvae managed to penetrate the skin within 1/2 hr after the application. Hairs did not seem to constitute sites of entry. The larvae moved into the horny layer where edges of keratinized cells provide uneven spots. They mig…

Ecdysis triggering hormone is essential for larva-pupa-adult transformation in Leptinotarsa decemlineata.

In Drosophila melanogaster, ecdysis triggering hormone (ETH) is the key factor triggering ecdysis behaviour and promoting trachea clearance. … on. More than 80% of the Ldeth-depleted beetles remained as prepupae, completely wrapped in the old larval cuticles. These prepupae became withered, dried and darkened gradually, and finally died in soil. The remaining Ldeth hypomorphs pupated and emerged as abnormal adults, bearing smaller and wrinkle elytrum and hindwing. Moreover, the tracheae in the …

Cutaneous larva migrans in a young child following circumrotation as a cultural ritual.

Cutaneous larva migrans is an acquired, self-limited infestation caused by cat hookworm, Ancylostoma braziliense, and dog hookworm, A. caninum The disease is acquired by direct contact with contaminated soil. Circumrotation is a religious ritual practised by devotees of Hinduism as a fulfilment of vows taken at the shrine and involves rolling over with uncovered upper body on the sand over a distance of up to 600 m. It is a reported mode of acquisition of cutaneous larva migrans infestation. The authors report a 10-year-old boy who acquired cutaneous larva migrans on his right forearm after ci…

Urinary Canthariasis Due to Tenebrio molitor Larva in a Ten-Year-Old Boy.

Canthariasis is a human disease caused by infestation of beetle larvae. We report here an unusual cause of urogenital infection due to Tenebrio molitor in a 10-year-old boy suffering from severe and intermittent suprapubic pain from Nehbandan City, Northeastern Iran in 2018. After 9 months, three larvae were excreted. Keratinization of bladder wall was observed in histopathology. All laboratory evaluations were normal except for presence of microscopic hematuria. This report implicated that T. molitor could infest bladder accidentally and cause canthariasis and clinical symptoms that may lead …

Bullous and pustular cutaneous larva migrans: two case reports and a literature review.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) is a common skin infestation in tropical countries. The classic presentation is a serpiginous, migratory track on the feet. Local and systemic reactions, as well as secondary bacterial infections, are rarely reported. The authors report two cases of CLM with a blister and pustular response on uncommon body locations. The patients were treated with anthelmintic therapy, and a topical corticosteroid was used to relieve their severe reactions. This report aims to describe an infrequent presentation of a common disease and review treatment plans.

Larva migrans syndrome caused by Toxocara and Ascaris roundworm infections in Japanese patients.

Larva migrans syndrome (LMS) caused by Toxocara and Ascaris roundworms is generally believed to be more common in children, while a report from Japan suggests that it is more common in adults. We conducted a large-scale retrospective study to confirm these findings and to clarify what caused the difference between Japan and other countries, to reveal overlooked aspects of this disease. The clinical information of 911 cases which we diagnosed as Toxocara or Ascaris LMS during 2001 and 2015 was analysed. Information used included age, sex, address (city or county), chief complaint, present histo…

The hydrodynamics of contact of a marine larva, Bugula neritina, with a cylinder.

Marine larvae are often considered as drifters that collide with larval collectors as passive particles. The trajectories of Bugula neritina larvae and of polystyrene beads were recorded in the velocity field of a vertical cylinder. The experiments illustrated that the trajectories of larvae and of beads may differ markedly. By considering a larva as a self-propelled mechanical microswimmer, a mathematical model of its motion in the two-dimensional velocity field of a long cylinder was formulated. Simulated larval trajectories were compared with experimental observations. We calculated the rat…

Alteration of cytokine production during visceral larva migrans by Toxascaris leonina in mice.

To determine alteration of immune responses during visceral larva migrans (VLM) caused by Toxascaris leonina at several time points, we experimentally infected mice with embryonated eggs of T. leonina and measured T-helper (Th) cell-related serial cytokine production after infection. At day 5 post infection (PI), most larvae were detected from the lungs, spleen, intestine, and muscle. Expression of thymic stromal lymphopoietin (TSLP) and CCL11 (eotaxin) showed a significant increase in most infected organs, except the intestine. However, expression of the CXCL1 (Gro-α) gene was most highly enh…

Phagocyte-specific S100 proteins in the local response to the Echinococcus granulosus larva.

Infection by larval Echinococcus granulosus is usually characterized by tight inflammatory control. However, various degrees of chronic granulomatous inflammation are also observed, reaching a high point in infection of cattle by the most prevalent parasite strain worldwide, which is not well adapted to this host species. In this context, epithelioid and multinucleated giant macrophages surround the parasite, and the secreted products of these cells often associate with the larval wall. The phagocyte-specific S100 proteins, S100A8, S100A9 and S100A12, are important non-conventionally secreted …

Encysted Tenia solium larva of oral cavity: Case report with review of literature.

Cysticercosis is caused by the larvae of the pig tapeworm, Tenia solium. Oral cysticercosis is a rare event and is often a diagnostic challenge to the clinician. We report a 12-year-old girl who presented with a single, painless, nodule on the lower lip that was diagnosed as cysticercosis. Current literature on the clinical presentations, investigations, and treatment of the condition has been reviewed in this article. We have also proposed a set of criteria for the diagnosis of oral cysticercosis.

Ophthalmomyiasis caused by a Phormia sp. (Diptera: Calliphoridae) larva in an enucleated patient.

Ophthalmomyiasis rarely occurs worldwide, and has not been reported in Korea. We present here a case of ophthalmomyiasis caused by Phormia sp. fly larva in an enucleated eye of a patient. In June 2010, a 50-year-old man was admitted to Dankook University Hospital for surgical excision of a malignant melanoma located in the right auricular area. He had a clinical history of enucleation of his right eye due to squamous cell carcinoma 5 years ago. During hospitalization, foreign body sensation developed in his right eye, and close examination revealed a fly larva inside the eye, which was evacuat…

Active sensation during orientation behavior in the Drosophila larva: more sense than luck.

The fruit fly Drosophila larva demonstrates a sophisticated repertoire of behavior under the control of a numerically simple neural system. Historically, the stereotyped responses of larvae to light and odors captivated the attention of biologists. More recently, the sensory receptors responsible for chemosensation, thermosensation, and vision have been identified. While our understanding of the molecular logic of perception has clearly progressed, little is known about the neural and computational mechanisms guiding movement in sensory gradients. Here we review evidence that larvae orient bas…
