INTRODUCTION: Ivermectin is a semi-synthetic derivative of a family of macrocyclic lactones. This drug has a broad-spectrum anti-parasitic effect against various nematodes and ectoparasites. CURRENT KNOWLEDGE AND KEY-POINTS: Onchocerciasis and lymphatic filariasis are common indications. More recently ivermectin has been recommended in the treatment of strongyloidiasis and scabies.
FUTURE PROSPECTS AND PROJECTS: Promising results have been shown in the treatment of ascariasis, cutaneous larva migrans, loiasis and head lice.

Pet-related infections in humans are diverse, rather infrequent considering the high number of pets in households and often unrecognized. This article briefly covers a couple of them, caused by bacteria (salmonellosis and campylobacteriosis, cat-scratch disease, fish tank granuloma, psittacosis), fungi (dermatophytosis), viruses (lymphocytic choriomeningitis) and parasites (toxoplasmosis, toxocariasis, cutaneous larva migrans, echinococcosis) and describes their epidemiology and clinical presentation. Widening of public tastes in this area opens doors for emerging diseases (e.g. Cowpox virus w…

Visceral larva migrans (VLM) is endemic in Israel; therefore, a positive serology is not unusual in our general population. The clinical manifestations of the disease may mimic other clinical conditions. Sometimes life-threatening disorders have to be considered in the differential diagnosis. This diagnostic dilemma can be solved occasionally only by histological examination. We report two patients, one with a lymphoma-like presentation and the other with an intraocular tumoral mass suggesting retinoblastoma, and discuss the diagnostic difficulties.

To investigate the potential pathogenicity of Baylisascaris spp. nematodes, mice were experimentally infected with Baylisascaris transfuga eggs, which had been cultured in 0.1 N sulphuric acid, for a period in excess of 1 year. Infectivity for mice appeared after 2 weeks in cultures (2.8%), peaked after 4 weeks (37.4%) and then waned over the next 18 months. The implications of B. transfuga as a possible agent of visceral larva migrans in animals and humans was demonstrated.

The authors give a comprehensive review of the epidemiology, clinical presentations, diagnosis and current therapy of parasitic infections with CNS manifestations in both the normal and immunocompromised host. These include toxoplasmosis, malaria, amebiasis, neurocystcersosis, hydatid disease, and trichinosis. Additional sections cover disseminated strongyloidiasis, eosinophilic meningitis, visceral and ocular larva migrans, schistosomiasis, and cerebral paragonimiasis. Emphasis is on the neurologic complications of these diseases and their presentations in populations at increased risk for ac…

The most common worm infection in children in the United States is pinworm infection. In second place is roundworm infection. Agents that are effective against these nematodes in a high proportion of cases are available. In hookworm disease, generally seen in older children, tetrachloroethylene treatment is being supplanted by use of drugs less likely to have adverse side effect. Visceral larva migrans is difficult to diagnose and to treat, and our best hope for control lies in prevention.

Toxocara canis and Ancylostoma spp. are geohelmints that parasites dogs and can eventually affect humans, mainly children, causing visceral and cutaneous larva migrans respectively, constituting a serious public health problem. This study was carried out in two towns located in the xerophilous forest Chaco salteño where humans live closely with many animals, including dogs. Hematological values and anti-Toxocara canis antibodies, determined by ELISA in serum, were evaluated in 98 children from this area. Thirty-six children presented with eosinophilia of 10% or higher in peripheral blood. Twen…

Infestations of humans with the parasitic nematode T. canis are common in both developing and industrialized countries. Most infestations induce a clinically inapparent course of infection, however, severe clinical manifestations, i.e. visceral larva migrans (VLM) or ocular larva migrans (OLM) syndromes are observed. To find an explanation for the different courses of toxocarosis we examined several serological parameters: the expression of (i) specific IgE (Immunoblot, IB), (ii) specific IgG subclasses (IgG1-4, ELISA and the formation of (iii) IgE/anti-IgE immune complexes. Serum samples were…

Gnathostomiasis is an helminthic zoonotic disease endemic in Asia, mainly in Southeastern Asia, and Latin America, that has been increasingly reported in travelers returning from these areas. It is due to the consumption of raw or insufficiently cooked meat (chiken, snakes), frogs or fish, contaminated with larvae of the gender Gnathostoma. Gnathostomiasis includes a great variety of clinical manifestations caused by cutaneous and/or visceral larva migrans syndrome. We present here parasitological, epidemiological, clinical and therapeutic aspect of the disease.

The eosinophilic lung is a term used to identify a heterogeneous group of parasitic diseases leading to common manifestations including alveolar or tissular pulmonary eosinophilia and, classically, radiological visible lesions of the lung. The different clinical presentations--Löffler's syndrome, larva migrans syndrome and tropical pulmonary eosinophilia are analyzed in this article and the particular features of the different causal parasites are discussed. Positive and differential diagnostic procedures in patients with pulmonary eosinophilia due to mycoses, drugs, vasculitis or an unknown c…

Gnathostomiasis was first described in Mexico in 1970, and endemic areas have been spreading in six states of this country. In Culiacan, Sinaloa, 300 cases of cutaneous larva migrans were recorded between January 1992 and December 1995. In addition, a Gnathostoma larva was surgically removed from the eye of one patient. Cutaneous lesions were observed mainly on the face, neck, arms, and legs. About 70% of the patients showed eosinophilia. A skin biopsy was carried out on 35 patients and the parasite was identified in histopathologic sections of 12 of these patients. In four patients, the larva…

The modern chemotherapy of intestinal worm diseases is essentially based on niclosamide, thiabendazole and mebendazole. Thus an effective therapy with few side effects has become possible for these helminthiases. In infections with Taenia, Ascaris, Trichuris, Ankylostoma, Strongyloides, Trichostrongylus and Oxyuris, as the most frequently imported helminths, an elimination rate of over 90% of the parasites can be attained. Infections with nematode larvae as with Larva migrans and trichinoses are more problematic therapeutically because the anthelmintics are directed principally against the adu…

BACKGROUND: The raccoon roundworm, Baylisascaris procyonis, can cause a meningoencephalitis as neural larva migrans which is known in avian species, including rainbow lorikeets in North America, but has not been described in Old World parrots in Germany yet.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-month-old, male rainbow lorikeet from a zoo in Germany was submitted for necropsy. Prior to death the animal had progressive neurological signs like apathy and torticollis. In the cerebrum a focally extensive severe granulomatous to necrotizing encephalitis with an intralesional larval nematode was diagnosed. Based …

Infections represent one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in solid organ transplantation (SOT) recipients. Although Toxocara species are prevalent worldwide, toxocariasis is an important neglected human disease that can manifest as visceral or ocular larva migrans, or covert toxocariasis. Herein, we report and discuss the first documented case of a splenic abscess associated with toxocariasis in a 69-year-old lung transplant recipient, in France. This case emphasizes the need to include prevention of toxocariasis in the management of lung transplant patients.

Ocular gnathostomiasis is rather a rare food-borne zoonosis caused by infection with the larvae of several species of genus Gnathostoma and is a representative ocular larva migrans syndrome. In our previous literature survey, we found 73 cases of ocular gnathostomiasis reported up to and including 2009, though additional sporadic cases have been reported in Asia and the Americas since that report. Here, we review 10 additional cases reported since 2010, and also update current findings regarding epidemiological and clinical features in affected patients.
