Leveraging Behavioral Sciences to Augment Voluntary Blood Donation in China: A Randomized Control Trial and Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: China is facing a blood shortage crisis and needs to increase its voluntary blood donation rates. Since current programs to promote blood donation may not be sufficient to meet the rising demand, innovative approaches are needed. Behavioral sciences can provide useful insights for developing behavioral interventions to enhance blood donation. However, there have been few empirical studies to evaluate the efficacy of such interventions across different potential and existing donor subgroups. METHOD: This randomized controlled trial and latent class analysis (LCA) empirically evalua…

Assessing NIAAA's Definition of Recovery from Alcohol Use Disorder: A Latent Class Analysis of a Heterogeneous Online Sample.

NIAAA's 2022 definition of recovery from alcohol use disorder (AUD) includes two core components, remission of DSM-5 AUD criteria and cessation of heavy drinking. This study's purpose was to assess patterns of AUD symptoms and heavy drinking in a heterogeneous national sample, in order to clarify the utility of the definition. Participants who self-reported having resolved an alcohol problem for at least six months were recruited through Amazon Mechanical Turk (N=386) and surveyed about their problem severity, current drinking, and AUD symptomology. We used latent class analysis to discern mea…

A latent class analysis of mental disorders, substance use, and aggressive antisocial behavior among Swedish forensic psychiatric patients.

BACKGROUND: Patients in the forensic mental health services (FMHS) with a mental disorder, a co-occurring substance use disorder (SUD), and high risk of aggressive antisocial behavior (AAB) are sometimes referred to as the 'triply troubled'. They suffer poor treatment outcomes, high rates of criminal recidivism, and increased risk of drug related mortality. To improve treatment for this heterogeneous patient group, more insight is needed concerning their co-occurring mental disorders, types of substances used, and the consequent risk of AAB. METHODS: A three-step latent class analysis (LCA) w…

Response letter to "Latent class analysis of 216 patients with adult-onset Still's disease" by Sugiyama et al.

Sugiyama et al. recently described in "Latent class analysis of 216 patients with adult-onset Still's disease," baseline characteristics, laboratory tests, treatment, relapse, and death of adult-onset Still's disease (AOSD) patients from a Japanese hospital. They identified two subgroups: Class 1 (n=155) with a younger age and typical symptoms of AOSD and Class 2 (n=61) with older patients and fewer typical symptoms of AOSD. In 2022, VEXAS (vacuoles, E1 enzyme, X-linked, autoinflammatory, somatic) syndrome, an established X-linked disease associated with a somatic mutation in UBA1, is consider…

Translating From Egg- to Antigen-Based Indicators for Schistosoma mansoni Elimination Targets: A Bayesian Latent Class Analysis Study.

Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease affecting over 240-million people. World Health Organization (WHO) targets for Schistosoma mansoni elimination are based on Kato-Katz egg counts, without translation to the widely used, urine-based, point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen diagnostic (POC-CCA). We aimed to standardize POC-CCA score interpretation and translate them to Kato-Katz-based standards, broadening diagnostic utility in progress towards elimination. A Bayesian latent-class model was fit to data from 210 school-aged-children over four timepoints pre- to six-months-post-treatment.

Latent class analysis-derived subphenotypes are generalisable to observational cohorts of acute respiratory distress syndrome: a prospective study.

RATIONALE: Using latent class analysis (LCA), two subphenotypes of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) have consistently been identified in five randomised controlled trials (RCTs), with distinct biological characteristics, divergent outcomes and differential treatment responses to randomised interventions. Their existence in unselected populations of ARDS remains unknown. We sought to identify subphenotypes in observational cohorts of ARDS using LCA. METHODS: LCA was independently applied to patients with ARDS from two prospective observational cohorts of patients admitted to the inte…

Profiles of HIV Care Disruptions Among Adult Patients Lost to Follow-up in Zambia: A Latent Class Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients report varied barriers to HIV care across multiple domains, but specific barrier patterns may be driven by underlying, but unobserved, behavioral profiles. METHODS: We traced a probability sample of patients lost to follow-up (>90 days late) as of July 31, 2015 from 64 clinics in Zambia. Among those found alive, we ascertained patient-reported reasons for care disruptions. We performed latent class analysis to identify patient subgroups with similar patterns of reasons reported and assessed the association between class membership and care status (ie, disengaged versus si…

Patterns of polysubstance use and overdose among people who inject drugs in Baltimore, Maryland: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Opioid-related overdose rates continue to climb. However, little research has examined the reach of overdose education and naloxone trainings among people who inject drugs (PWID). Understanding gaps in coverage is essential to improving the public health response to the ongoing crisis. METHODS: We surveyed 298 PWID in Baltimore City, MD. We conducted a latent class analysis of drug use indicators and tested for differences by class in past month overdose, having received overdose training, and currently having naloxone. RESULTS: Three classes emerged: cocaine/heroin injection (40…

Measuring Transitions in Sexual Risk Among Men Who Have Sex With Men: The Novel Use of Latent Class and Latent Transition Analysis in HIV Sentinel Surveillance.

New combination human acquired deficiency (HIV) prevention strategies that include biomedical and primary prevention approaches add complexity to the task of measuring sexual risk. Latent transition models are beneficial for understanding complex phenomena; therefore, we trialed the application of latent class and latent transition models to HIV surveillance data. Our aims were to identify sexual risk states and model individuals' transitions between states. A total of 4,685 HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) completed behavioral questionnaires alongside tests for HIV and sexually tr

A statistical method was used for the meta-analysis of tests for latent TB in the absence of a gold standard, combining random-effect and latent-class methods to estimate test accuracy.

OBJECTIVE: Because of the lack of a gold standard, the diagnostic performance of tests for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is not known. However, statistical methods can be used to estimate the accuracy from the studies reporting the concordance among the tests. STUDY DESIGN AND SETTING: We developed a random-effect latent-class model to estimate performance characteristics of three LTBI diagnostic tests: tuberculin skin test (TST, at 10-mm cutoff), QuantiFERON-TB gold (QFG), and TSPOT-TB from the studies evaluating agreement among the tests. RESULTS: Nineteen studies w
