How to assess and improve quality of medical education: lessons learned from Faculty of Medicine in Sarajevo.

There is no such science as medicine where half life is 7 years, what means that in 3-4 years 50% of current knowledge will be wrong. If doctors use old techniques and methods then they will cure patients wrongly. Very fast and rapid increase of biomedical sciences and medical information in certain way force medical professionals to continuity learning in order to stay update. In this project a quantitative method of examination has been used. For the purposes of the research a survey questionnaires were created consisted of 28, 35 and 18 questions for all three groups of examinees. Beside ge

Antifibrotic drug finerenone restores fertility in premature ovarian insufficiency.

Currently, no effective treatment exists for infertility associated with premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) because affected patients lack hormone-responsive antral follicles. By screening a Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved drug library, we identified finerenone, a kidney disease medication, as a promising drug for restoring fertility in POI. Finerenone stimulated follicle development in aged mice and restored antral follicle development in patients with POI following oral administration, resulting in mature oocytes and embryos. Mechanistically, finerenone reduced fibrotic deposi

Allergic Fungal Rhinosinusitis in Saudi Arabia: A Review of Recent Literature.

Allergic fungal rhinosinusitis (AFRS) has been considered an enigma since it was first described four decades ago. Previous research has found that AFRS has multiple definitions and a poorly understood pathogenesis because it overlaps with other conditions and necessitates meticulous work and multiple diagnostic modalities to confirm the diagnosis. However, despite the expansion of medical and surgical treatments, recurrence still occurs. In this review, the recent literature on AFRS cases in Saudi Arabia with relevance to its epidemiology, diagnosis, and management was studied and compared wi

Hyperferritinemia in Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Iron Accumulation or Inflammation?

Hyperferritinemia, observed in inflammation, iron overload as well as in combination of both, is found in ∼30% of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) patients. The authors summarized the evidence regarding the potential cause of hyperferritinemia in NAFLD, as this may affect the indicated therapy. A systematic literature search was conducted in EMBASE, PubMed, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane library. In the majority of NAFLD patients, hyperferritinemia is due to inflammation without hepatic iron overload. In a smaller group, a dysmetabolic iron overload syndrome (DIOS) is found, showing hyperfe

A robust cell counting approach based on a normalized 2D cross-correlation scheme for in-line holographic images.

To achieve the important aims of identifying and marking disease progression, cell counting is crucial for various biological and medical procedures, especially in a Point-Of-Care (POC) setting. In contrast to the conventional manual method of counting cells, a software-based approach provides improved reliability, faster speeds, and greater ease of use. We present a novel software-based approach to count in-line holographic cell images using the calculation of a normalized 2D cross-correlation. This enables fast, computationally-efficient pattern matching between a set of cell library images

An autopathography of tic douloureux at the beginning of the nineteenth century.

An Italian lawyer who suffered from tic douloureux wrote an autopathography of his disease documenting a 2-decade history of essential trigeminal neuralgia. The diary reveals a medical history from onset until 1823 when this man was admitted to the Arcispedale Sant'Anna in Ferrara. The documentation was recently discovered in the library of the hospital where it was probably placed when the patient died in 1824. Mr. Ruggiero Ragazzi was a man of notable culture who described the course of his disease and the most accredited treatments of that age. Famous Italian physicians examined and treated

Dr Ross McIntire, otolaryngologist, and his care of President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

The role that otolaryngologist Ross McIntire, MD, played in the care of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, 32nd President of the United States, was documented by reviewing primary source material pertaining to the relationship of McIntire and Roosevelt. This included material from various archives including the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library at Hyde Park, New York; United States National Archives; and numerous autobiographies and diaries. McIntire's belief in the value of confidentiality and to provide information only on a need-to-know basis is consistent with the strategy that he had dev

ZM-306416 prevents ovariectomy-induced bone loss by promoting osteoblastogenesis and inhibiting osteoclastogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis affects millions of people worldwide, and current medications such as bisphosphonates and denosumab are not effective enough to reverse bone loss. Moreover, these treatments have drawbacks, including jaw osteonecrosis and skin eczema. Hence, there is an urgent need for new drugs to treat osteoporosis. METHODS: Drug library screening was performed via alkaline phosphatase (ALP) staining in osteoblasts to identify potential candidates for osteoporosis treatment. qPCR, Western blotting, ALP staining, alizarin red staining, and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) s

The value of computed tomography in discriminating malignant from non-malignant causes of unresolved unilateral pleural effusions: a systematic review.

The scientific background in expert-opinion papers for recommending Computed Tomography (CT) in unilateral pleural exudates is based on studies including patients with other findings than unilateral pleural effusions or selected patients undergoing thoracoscopy. Therefore, we performed a systematic review investigating the sensitivity of CT for predicting malignancy in patients with unilateral, non-transudative, pleural effusions. A search strategy was developed with the assistance of a medical information specialist at our university library. We searched PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE and Cochrane Li

Screening a Repurposing Library for Inhibitors of Multidrug-Resistant Candida auris Identifies Ebselen as a Repositionable Candidate for Antifungal Drug Development.

Since its original isolation in 2009, Candida auris has spread across the globe as a causative agent of invasive candidiasis. C. auris is typically intrinsically resistant to fluconazole and can also be resistant to echinocandins and even amphotericin B. Thus, there is an urgent need to find new treatment options against this emerging pathogen. To address this growing problem, we performed a screen of the Prestwick Chemical library, a repurposing library of 1,280 small molecules, consisting mostly of approved off-patent drugs, in search of those with activity against a multidrug-resistant C. a

A systematic review of peroneal nerve palsy and recovery following traumatic knee dislocation.

PURPOSE: A common peroneal nerve (CPN) palsy has been reported to complicate knee dislocations in 5-40 % of patients. Patients who suffer from a persistent foot drop have significantly worse functional outcomes. Reports on prognostic factors for nerve recovery or treatment-specific functional outcomes remain sparse in the literature. METHODS: Two independent reviewers completed a search of Medline, Embase, PubMed and the Cochrane Library from 1946 to present. Motor strength was determined using the Medical Research Council (MRC) grading system or an equivalent description. A functional recove

Corrigendum: Monte Carlo calculation of119Sb microscale absorbed dose using cascaded and averaged Auger electron spectra (2025Phys. Med. Biol. 70 115022).

An error in the original manuscript was identified regarding the use of Auger transition data from the Evaluated Atomic Data Library (EADL). In the original publication, electron energies and transition probabilities for Auger, Coster-Kronig, and super Coster-Kronig transitions were retrieved from the EADL for Sb in order to compare with data for119Sbavailable from the Medical Internal Radiation Dose (MIRD) RADTABS program. However, data for Sn should have been retrieved instead. Here we present a corrected comparison of individual transitions using the EADL transition data for the daughter at

Diffuse Idiopathic Skeletal Hyperostosis of Upper Cervical Vertebrae: A Case Report of a Rare Anatomical Presentation During Bone Retrieval.

Diffuse idiopathic skeletal hyperostosis (DISH), also known as Forestier's disease, is a systemic skeletal disorder characterized by ossification of spinal and extraspinal ligaments. While DISH commonly affects the thoracic and lumbar spine, upper cervical involvement (C1-C3) is rare. During routine dissection and subsequent bone retrieval for the osteology library at Goa Medical College, ossification of the anterior longitudinal ligament (ALL) and the alar ligament was observed in the upper cervical vertebrae. Upper cervical DISH may remain asymptomatic or manifest as dysphagia, airway obstru

Synthesis and In Vitro Profiling of Psilocin Derivatives: Improved Stability and Synthetic Properties.

As interest in using psilocybin therapy for treating mental health disorders intensifies, the need for efficient production methods becomes increasingly important. Current medical-grade psilocybin production is inefficient and relies on a complicated multistep synthesis. This study has explored and evaluated psilocin ester prodrugs and psilocin salts as potential alternatives to psilocybin, focusing on their ease of synthesis, chemical stability, and metabolic profiles. A diverse library of 15 psilocin ester prodrugs and six psilocin salts was synthesized and evaluated. The study successfully
