Plant lignin is regarded as an important source for soil humic substances (HSs). Nonetheless, it remains unclear whether microbial metabolism on lignin is related to the genesis of unique HS biological activities (e.g., direct plant stimulation). Here, selected white-rot fungi (i.e., Ganoderma lucidum and Irpex lacteus) and plant litter- or mountain soil-derived microbial consortia were exploited to structurally modify lignin, followed by assessing the plant-stimulatory activity of the lignin-derived products. Parts solubilized by microbial metabolism on lignin were proven to exhibit organic m

Lignin-modifying enzymes (LMEs) are impactful biocatalysts in environmental remediation applications. However, LMEs-assisted experimental degradation neglects the molecular basis of pollutant degradation. Furthermore, throughout the remediation process, the inherent hazards of environmental pollutants remain untapped for in-depth toxicological endpoints. In this investigation, a predictive toxicological framework and a computational framework adopting LMEs were employed to assess the hazards of Priority Pollutants (PP) and its possible LMEs-assisted catalytic screening. The potential hazardous

This paper presented a green and environmentally friendly method to obtain lignin with a structure similar to milled wood lignin (MWL) and high-purity cellulose from biomass in a two-step process. The first step, maleic acid (MA), choline chloride (ChCl), and ethylene glycol (EG) ternary deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment was performed to obtain lignin with less-condensed structure. The results showed that the obtained lignin had similar properties to MWL under the condition (MA/ChCl/EG = 1:5:15, 80°C, 10 h). The DES recovered still had good cycle performance. The second step, the cellul

This study explores the suitability of residual lignin-containing fractions generated as side-streams in different conversion processes of eucalypt and pine woods as thickening agents in bio-lubricant formulations. These conversion processes included fermentable sugars extraction by autohydrolysis or steam explosion and kraft pulping. Structural properties of lignin fractions were characterized by FTIR, 1H and 13C NMR, two-dimensional NMR, TGA and SEC, whereas their compositions were analysed by standard analytical methods. On the other hand, chemical oleogels were prepared with NCO-functional

In this study, a lignin-based polyacid catalyst was synthesized via two steps to enhance water resistance of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins. The first steps involved a hydroxymethylation reaction to increase the hydroxyl content in lignin. Then, hydroxymethylated lignins were reacted with maleic anhydride to form maleated lignin-based polyacids. The acid groups were expected to function as acid catalysts to catalyze the curing process of UF resin. In order to elucidate the structural variation, 3-methoxy-4-hydroxyphenylpropane as a typical guaiacol lignin structural unit was used as a model com

Firstly studied and pointed out because of their major role in wood recalcitrance to delignification, LCCs are gradually raising interest about their own valorization thanks to their various interesting properties. Considering their future industrial production, this work is focused on evaluating the impact of different downstream processes (DSP) on their structure including moist heat sterilization, simple effect evaporation and spray-drying. LCCs were recovered from the mill water of a thermomechanical plant by successive membrane filtration steps. Samples were taken after the different DSP

Deciphering the fiber-cement interfacial reaction without chemical labeling and digestion remains a significant challenge in vibrational and fluorescence spectroscopy. Herein, we have elucidated the reaction between lignin and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) utilizing excitation emission matrix (EEM) fluorescence and deep ultraviolet (DUV) Raman spectroscopy. Tracking lignin photoluminescence via excitation-emission maxima (EX-EM max) reveals emission governed by both classical aromatic chromophores and supramolecular clusteroluminogen networks. In unbleached Kraft pulp (UBKP) fibers, the excitati

Stone cell lignification is a key determinant of pear fruit texture and commercial quality, and this process has been reported to be tightly coupled to cellular glucose availability. However, how glucose dose-dependently targets transcription factor phosphorylation during lignin biosynthesis remains largely unknown. Using yeast two-hybrid library screening and phosphorylation assays, we found that PbSnRK1, a glucose-responsive kinase, interacts with and directly phosphorylates PbTCP13, thereby participating in the regulation of stone cell lignification. PbSnRK1 serves as an energy-status senso

Tension wood (TW) is a specialized xylem tissue formed in angiosperm trees to counteract mechanical stresses. Increased phytohormones, particularly gibberellins (GAs), and decreased lignin deposition are two well-established features of TW, yet the molecular mechanisms linking GA signaling to lignin repression remain largely unknown. Here we revealed that TW formation in Populus trichocarpa elevates GA accumulation, which activates the expression of PtrLBD39, the most strongly induced transcription factor and a repressor of lignin biosynthesis in TW development. Inhibition of GA biosynthesis a

Plant microRNAs (miRNAs) function as critical regulators of various developmental and physiological processes by downregulating the expression of their target genes. miRNA-encoded peptides (miPEPs) represent an additional regulatory layer by enhancing the transcription of their cognate miRNAs. . Although miPEP408 has been implicated in heavy-metal tolerance through regulation of sulfur assimilation, its role in plant immunity remains unknown. Here, we investigate the role of the miPEP408-miR408-Laccase3 (LAC3) regulatory cascade in defense against the necrotrophic fungus Rhizoctonia solani AG-

Brown planthopper (Nilaparvata lugens, BPH) is a major pest that severely limits rice production. Although plant defense against BPH involves complex metabolic and structural responses, the role of non-protein amino acids (NPAAs) in this process remains poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate that (R)-β-tyrosine functions as a key defense metabolite that enhances rice resistance to BPH. Exogenous application and genetic manipulation across different rice backgrounds revealed that (R)-β-tyrosine does not directly affect insect survival but instead acts through host-mediated mechanisms. Lignin deposition in fruit trees represents a fundamental physiological trade-off: essential for structural integrity and stress adaptation, yet excessive or mistimed activation compromises fruit texture, palatability, and market value. This review synthesizes advances in lignin biosynthesis and its multilayered regulation in commercial fruit species. We describe how abiotic (drought, salinity, temperature extremes) and biotic (pathogens, pests) stresses trigger lignification through transcriptional, post-transcriptional, hormonal, and epigenetic mechanisms, centered on the conserved NAC-MYB c

Innovative lignin functionalization strategies which graft a large amount of unsaturation onto lignin have been developed. Ruthenium catalysis using allyl alcohol or diallyl ether has been used to develop ready-to-graft allylic synthons based on glycerol carbonate and related derivatives. Allylated glycerol carbonate and glycidyl allyl ethers were thus used in effective ring-opening reactions with high atom economy to convert Kraft, Organosolv, and Soda lignins without prior purification. Glycidyl allyl ethers were grafted onto lignin with a substitution degree of hydroxyl groups up to 90%. Te

Vernicia montana possesses a robust root system and exhibits high resistance to the soil-borne fungus Fusarium. The molecular mechanism underlying this resistance remains largely elusive. Here, we identified the species-specific UDP-glucosyltransferase coding genes VmUGT88A65 and VmUGT88A66 in V. montana through evolutionary analysis. These genes displayed exclusively root-specific expression patterns and were significantly upregulated upon infection with Fof-1. Transgenic tung trees overexpressing VmUGT88A65 and VmUGT88A66 exhibited a substantial increase in root index from 1.59 g to 2.16 g a

Phase change microcapsules are attractive thermal regulation fillers; however, their integration into polymer matrices remains limited by weak interfacial compatibility and structural deterioration during processing. Herein, a sustainable dual-role lignin interfacial engineering strategy is proposed to address these challenges. Poly(ethylene-alt-maleic anhydride)-modified lignin hybrid particles (ELs), prepared via acid-triggered self-assembly, served as both Pickering stabilizers and reactive interfacial modifiers. Lignin-hybrid PCM microcapsules (ELMCs) containing tetradecanol were fabricate

Cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD) is a key enzyme in lignin biosynthesis, but its role in grapevine cold tolerance is not well understood. Here we identified 23 VvCAD members from the 'Pinot Noir' genome and focused on VvCAD15-like, a Group II member whose expression was induced by cold. Transient overexpression of this gene in grape calli and plantlets increased lignin content, antioxidant enzyme activities (CAT, POD, SOD), and proline level, while decreased MDA, H₂O₂, and membrane permeability. It also upregulated VvCBF1/3 and VvICE1a. Transcriptome data implied potential links between Vv

As an abundant bio-based resource, lignin can be converted to functional carbon materials, thereby providing a sustainable pathway toward free-standing sulfur cathode design. However, rational carbonization engineering remains essential for optimizing sulfur utilization and polysulfide conversion behavior in lithium-sulfur batteries. In this work, lignin valorization and free-standing electrode design are integrated through electrospinning-assisted fabrication of nanofibers, followed by high temperature carbonization to produce flexible and reusable sulfur hosts. The interconnected fibrous arc

Wound healing is essential for maintaining postharvest quality in potato tubers, and phenylpropanoid metabolism plays an important role in forming protective aromatic barriers at wound sites. This study investigated whether exogenous L-phenylalanine (L-Phe) could enhance wound responses associated with phenylpropanoids in wounded potato tubers. Treatment with 0.05 mmol L-1 L-Phe increased the activity of phenylpropanoid-related enzymes, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), cinnamate 4-hydroxylase (C4H), 4-coumarate: CoA ligase (4CL), cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase (CAD), and peroxidase

Plastic pollution has intensified globally due to the widespread use of non-biodegradable packaging materials. Conventional passive plastics lack adaptive functionality, limiting their preservation efficiency. Although biopolymer-based hydrogels offer biodegradability, film-forming ability, and intrinsic bioactivity, their instability in aqueous environments restricts application in high-moisture foods such as meat. In this study, lignin extracted from sugarcane tops via acid-alkali treatment was incorporated with chitosan films to enhance antioxidant, antimicrobial, UV-blocking, and mechanica

Lignin (LG) is widely incorporated into chitosan (CS) via physical blending to increase adsorption sites and thereby enhance dye removal. However, chemical grafting of LG onto CS has received limited attention due to persistent doubts about its superiority over physical blending and unclear the synergistic mechanism. Herein, we demonstrate a diisocyanate-mediated strategy to graft LG onto CS for enhancing the adsorption capacity of methylene blue (MB) by hyperconjugation-driven: the synergistic effects of expanded adsorption sites, strengthened binding affinity, and establishment of a benzene-
