Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is a rare autoimmune bullous disease associated with neoplasm, which is clinically characterized by mucocutaneous lesions resembling pemphigus vulgaris or erythema multiforme. A case presented with PNP refractory to chemotherapy including rituximab, predonisolone and cyclophosphamide (RCHOP regimen). A 36-year-old man, who had been diagnosed as extended follicular lymphoma, presented with a polymorphous skin eruption of the trunk, sclera conjunctivitis, and severe mucosal erosions of the lips and oral cavity. He was diagnosed as pemphigus pathologically by a biop

PURPOSE: Compromised swallowing, speaking, and local complications are the major disadvantages of established approaches to the posterior tongue and oropharynx. The mandibular split involves an esthetically unpleasant bipartition of the lower lip and is prone to bony non-union or sequestration. The conventional pull-through technique on the other hand lacks the secure reattachment of the lingually released soft tissues.
METHODS: The feasibility of a new modified pull-through approach was tested on three anatomical specimens. CAD/CAM cutting guides were used to design a retentive bone flap to

Sitosterolemia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder of lipid metabolism, with varied incidence rates of 1/200 000 to 1/1 000 000. The condition often presents prepubertally, but is commonly misdiagnosed as familial hypercholesterolemia. We want to raise clinical suspicion across pediatric generalists and subspecialties with our case report of a 7-year-old girl who presented via ophthalmology following the surgical removal of a lipid keratopathy of her cornea. Four years before her presentation at ophthalmology, she also underwent surgical excision of a large xanthoma from her left buttock. T

BACKGROUND: Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common malignancy in the United States. Most BCCs occur on cutaneous surfaces, but rare cases on the mucosal lip have also been documented. Because only a small number of mucosal BCC (mBCC) cases have been reported, data on their clinical characteristics and management are limited.
OBJECTIVE: To perform an updated literature review of the management of mBCCs on the lip.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review was conducted through a search of the PubMed database with the key phrases "mucosal basal cell carcinoma," "basal cell carcinoma mu

INTRODUCTION: Malignant tumors of the lower lip may have a variety of histopathology forms. The diagnosis and treatment of premalignant lesions are extremely important to avoid their malignant evolution. The lower lip tumor diagnosis is based on a series of correlations: anamnestic, clinical, laboratory and histopathological (the latter giving the certain diagnose).
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This study was carried out by selecting the cases with lower lip tumors operated between January 2012 and July 2014, in the Plastic Surgery and Reconstructive Microsurgery Clinic of Bucharest Clinical Emergen

BACKGROUND: Lower lip reconstruction requires consideration of esthetic and functional outcome in selecting a surgical procedure, and reconstruction with local tissue is useful. The authors reconstructed full-thickness defects with a unit advancement flap.
METHODS: Reconstruction was performed using this method in 4 patients with lower lip squamous cell carcinoma in whom tumor resection with preservation of the mouth angle was possible. The lower lip resection width was 30 to 45 mm, accounting for 50% to 68% of the entire width of the lower lip. The flap was prepared by lateral extension from

Oral inverted ductal papillomas are rare benign tumours of minor salivary glands. A case that appeared in a middle-aged HIV+ woman simultaneous to two condyloma acuminata on the lips is described. The presence of human papilloma virus (HPV) 11 DNA was demonstrated in all the samples using polymerase chain reaction. HPV could play an important role in the aetiology and pathogenesis of these lesions in this patient.

Epidermal barrier disruption caused by atypical squamous proliferations of the lip (SOL) creates an ideal environment for fungal growth. Histologic features of SOL include parakeratosis overlying partial- or full-thickness keratinocyte atypia with or without invasion of the dermis, dermal solar elastosis, and scattered inflammatory cells which are predominantly lymphocytes. Histologic features of SOL with fungal superinfections overlap those seen in primary fungal cheilitis with reactive atypia, creating a diagnostic challenge. One-hundred seventy SOL cases were examined for the presence of fu

INTRODUCTION: Oral cancer is common cancer in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) with a low five-year survival rate. It is among the four most common types of cancer in South East Asia region. In South-Central Asia, lip and oral cavity cancer is the second most common cancer according to the specific cancer types.
METHODS: This scoping review intended to investigate published studies on the current prevalence and incidence of oral cancer in LMICs. The review was conducted applying the search words "Oral Cancer" and "Mouth neoplasm" as the Medical Subject Heading (MeSH) major topic

Osteosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumours in which mesenchymal cells produce osteoid. It is generally the most common malignant bone neoplasm, although lesions of the jaw are uncommon. Osteosarcoma of the jaw (JOS) presents a lower incidence of metastasis and a better prognosis than osteosarcoma of the long bones. However, patients with JOS can exhibit advanced tumours, mainly when early diagnosis is not performed. This article reports on a case of an advanced osteosarcoma of the maxilla. A 38-year-old woman was referred for evaluation and treatment of recurrent fibrous dysplasia of the

A 66-year-old Japanese woman had a pigmented macule spreading from the internal aspect of the cheek to the vermilion border and perioral skin. Histology was that of in situ malignant melanoma. This case appears to be unique as it implies a longer period of radial growth than is usually observed in malignant melanoma of the oral mucosa.

A 48-year-old woman presented with a submucosal, slow-growing tumor of over 1.5 cm in the left upper lip. The enucleation was performed in local anesthesia and after a curved incision cranial to the tumor. The histopathology showed an encapsulated tumor with three diagnostic components: 1) epithelial (ductal) component forming the inner layer of cysts and tubules, 2) myoepithelial cells as their outer layer and 3) myxoid mesenchymal stroma. The healing was uneventful and only a thin scar on the mucosa was visible in the follow up. Pleomorphic adenoma of the minor salivary gland are less common
