Early proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy during and after therapeutic hypothermia in perinatal hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) remains a significant cause of mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment despite treatment with therapeutic hypothermia. Magnetic resonance H1-spectroscopy measures concentrations of cerebral metabolites to detect derangements in aerobic metabolism. OBJECTIVE: We assessed MR spectroscopy in neonates with HIE within 18-24 h of initiating therapeutic hypothermia and at 5-6 days post therapeutic hypothermia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eleven neonates with HIE underwent MR spectroscopy of the basal ganglia and white matter. We compared metabolite c

Expanded neurochemical profile in the early stage of Huntington disease using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

The striatum is a well-known region affected in Huntington disease (HD). However, other regions, including the visual cortex, are implicated. We have identified previously an abnormal energy response in the visual cortex of patients at an early stage of HD using 31 P magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31 P MRS). We therefore sought to further characterize these metabolic alterations with 1 H MRS using a well-validated semi-localized by adiabatic selective refocusing (semi-LASER) sequence that allows the measurement of an expanded number of neurometabolites. Ten early affected patients [Unified H…

1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy evidence for occipital involvement in treatment-naive paediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a chronic psychiatric disorder leading to considerable distress and disability. Therapies are effective in a majority of paediatric patients, however, many only get partial response. It is therefore important to study the underlying pathophysiology of the disorder. METHODS: 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) was used to study the concentration of brain metabolites in four different locations (cingulate gyrus and sulcus, occipital cortex, thalamus and right caudate nucleus). Treatment-naive children and adolescents with OCD (13 subjects) …

Brain glutamate in anorexia nervosa: a magnetic resonance spectroscopy case control study at 7 Tesla.

RATIONALE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a serious psychiatric disorder with high morbidity and mortality. There are no established pharmacological treatments and the neurobiology of the condition is poorly understood. Previous studies using magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) have shown that AN may be associated with reductions in indices of brain glutamate; however, at conventional field strengths (≤3 T), it is difficult to separate glutamate from its precursor and metabolite, glutamine. OBJECTIVES: The objective of the present study was to use high field (7 T) MRS to measure concentrations of…

Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy for Evaluating Portal-Systemic Encephalopathy in Patients with Chronic Hepatic Schistosomiasis Japonicum.

Portal-systemic encephalopathy (PSE) is classified as type B hepatic encephalopathy. Portal-systemic shunting rather than liver dysfunction is the main cause of PSE in chronic hepatic schistosomiasis japonicum (HSJ) patients. Owing to lack of detectable evidence of intrinsic liver disease, chronic HSJ patients with PSE are frequently clinically undetected or misdiagnosed, especially chronic HSJ patients with covert PSE (subclinical encephalopathy). In this study, we investigated whether magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) could be a useful tool for diagnosing PSE in chronic HSJ patients. Mag…

Assessing crop residue phosphorus speciation using chemical fractionation and solution 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

At physiological maturity, nutrients in crop residues can be released to the soil where they are incorporated into different labile and non-labile pools while the remainder is retained within the residue itself. The chemical speciation of phosphorus (P) in crop residues is an important determinant of the fate of this P. In this study, we used chemical fractionation and (31)P nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, first separately and then together, to evaluate the P speciation of mature oat (Avena sativa) residue. Two water extracts (one employing shaking and the other sonication) and

Human umbilical mesenchymal stem cell and its adipogenic differentiation: Profiling by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

AIM: To study the metabolic profile of human umbilical mesenchymal stem cells (HUMSC) and adipogenic differentiation by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. METHODS: HUMSC isolated from human umbilical cord stroma were induced to adipocytes over 2 wk by adding dexamethasone, 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine, indomethacin, and insulin to the culture medium. Adipogenic differentiation was confirmed by Red O staining and transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Perchloric acid extracts of the HUMSCs and adipocytes (about 7 × 10(6)) were characterized for metabolites by using in vitro high r

Neurometabolite concentration and clinical features of chronic alcohol use: a proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study.

Chronic, heavy alcohol consumption may affect the concentration of neurometabolites assessed with proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS). We investigated the largest sample reported to date (N=213) with the primary goal of determining how specific clinical features impact neurometabolite concentrations in an anterior cingulate gray matter voxel. This community-dwelling sample included both treatment-seeking and non-treatment-seeking individuals. A healthy control group (N=66) was matched for age and education. In multivariate analyses predicting neurometabolite concentrations, the h…

[Long chain 3-hydroxyacyl-coA dehydrogenase deficiency, association with HELLP and magnetic resonance spectroscopy findings].

LCHAD deficiency is a disorder of fatty acid beta oxidation. The most common clinical presentation includes disorders of consciousness, hypoglycemia and liver dysfunction triggered by prolonged fasting or infection. Once a metabolic crisis is triggered, there is a high mortality. HELLP syndrome and acute fatty liver failure of pregnancy (AFLP) are disorders of the third trimester of pregnancy. These diseases have been associated during pregnancy with hereditary defects of beta-oxidation in the fetus. We report a case of beta-oxidation disorder (LCHAD deficiency) associated with maternal HELLP.

Non-invasive diagnosis of lung tuberculosis in children by single voxel ¹H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

UNLABELLED: Our previous study showed that (1)H-magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H-MRS) can detect lipid peaks characteristic for Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in cerebral lesions of young children; therefore, we aimed to extend and validate the application of (1)H-MRS for the diagnosis of active pulmonary tuberculosis lesions in three adolescent patients. Here, we document lipid peaks characteristic for M. tuberculosis infection by (1)H-MRS from lung tissue surrounding lung cavities of two patients whose sputum samples were positive for acid-fast bacilli by microscopy and positive f…

Phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy transect study of poultry operations on the Delmarva Peninsula.

Nonpoint source phosphorus (P) pollution into the Chesapeake Bay watershed from poultry operations contributes to the algal blooms, hypoxia, anoxia, and fish kill events that occur there most years. A major source of soluble, bioavailable P species is poultry litter, which is used as a crop fertilizer on fields adjacent to the tributaries of the Bay. A potentially significant source of orthophosphate in the litter is the heavily phosphorylated compound myo-inositol hexakisphosphate (phytate), which is indigestible by poultry and thus becomes a major component of their excreta. Phytate evaluati

Prefrontal cortical gamma-aminobutyric Acid levels in panic disorder determined by proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder (PD) is hypothesized to be associated with altered function of the major inhibitory neurotransmitter, gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA). Previous proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) studies found lower GABA concentrations in the occipital cortex of subjects with PD relative to healthy control subjects. The current study is the first MRS study to compare GABA concentrations between unmedicated PD subjects and control subjects in the prefrontal cortex (PFC). METHODS: Unmedicated subjects with PD (n = 17) and age- and sex-matched healthy control subjects (n = 17)…

Brain changes to hypocapnia using rapidly interleaved phosphorus-proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy at 4 T.

Substantial controversy persists in the literature concerning the physiologic consequences hypocapnia, or low partial pressure of carbon dioxide (PaCO(2)). Invasive animal studies have demonstrated large pH increases (>0.25 U), phosphocreatine (PCr) decreases (>30%), and adenosine triphosphate (ATP) decreases (>10%) after hyperventilation (HV) (20 mm Hg PaCO(2)). However, using magnetic resonance spectroscopy, HV studies in awake humans have demonstrated only small pH changes ( approximately 0.05 U) and no changes in PCr or ATP. It remains important to ascertain whether this failure to detect …

Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of bipolar disorder versus intermittent explosive disorder in children and adolescents.

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of bipolar disorder in juveniles is controversial. This study was designed to compare proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS) in patients with bipolar disorder or intermittent explosive disorder, two groups with symptomatic overlap but categorical distinction. Children with intermittent explosive disorder designate patients whose illness clinically resembles pediatric bipolar disorder but does not satisfy DSM-IV criteria for mania. Based on the authors' previous report of higher levels of (1)H MRS cingulate myo-inositol/creatine in youngsters with bipolar dis…

[Non invasive investigation of muscle diseases using 31P magnetic resonance spectroscopy: potential in clinical applications].

P-31 MRS has become in a very short time, a major new tool to explore muscle metabolism for clinical diagnostic purposes, while offering a unique non-invasive way to conduct advanced basic research in muscle physiopathology. The comparative analysis of normal and diseased muscle remains a major requirement to further define metabolic events surrounding muscle contraction and the metabolic anomalies underlying pathologies. Also, standardized rest-exercise-recovery protocols for exploration of muscle metabolism by P-31 MRS in healthy volunteers as well as in patients with intolerance to exercise
