Direction of information flow in large-scale resting-state networks is frequency-dependent.

Normal brain function requires interactions between spatially separated, and functionally specialized, macroscopic regions, yet the directionality of these interactions in large-scale functional networks is unknown. Magnetoencephalography was used to determine the directionality of these interactions, where directionality was inferred from time series of beamformer-reconstructed estimates of neuronal activation, using a recently proposed measure of phase transfer entropy. We observed well-organized posterior-to-anterior patterns of information flow in the higher-frequency bands (alpha1, alpha2…

Rhythmogram-based analysis for continuous electrographic data of the human brain.

Ecologically relevant stimuli are rarely used in scientific studies because they are difficult to control. Instead, researchers employ simple stimuli with sharp boundaries (in space and time). Here, we explore how the rhythmogram can be used to provide much needed rigorous control of natural continuous stimuli like music and speech. The analysis correlates important features in the time course of stimuli with corresponding features in brain activations elicited by the same stimuli. Correlating the identified regularities of the stimulus time course with the features extracted from the activati

Intensive instruction affects brain magnetic activity associated with oral word reading in children with persistent reading disabilities.

Fifteen children ages 7 to 9 years who had persistent reading difficulties despite adequate instruction were provided with intensive tutorial interventions. The interventions targeted deficient phonological processing and decoding skills for 8 weeks (2 hours per day) followed by an 8-week, 1-hour-per-day intervention that focused on the development of reading fluency skills. Spatiotemporal brain activation profiles were obtained at baseline and after each 8-week intervention program using magnetoencephalography during the performance of an oral sight-word reading task. Changes in brain activit…

Cerebral electromagnetic activity in the subdelta range.

The frequency range between 0.1 and 0.9 Hz was investigated with magnetoelectroencephalography-EEG coregistration in 10 adult patients with epilepsy and five children with other neurologic conditions. In all instances, a dominant rhythm between 0.2 and 0.4 Hz could be observed in the waking and sleeping states. It showed a waxing and waning quality and was unrelated to eye opening or closing but increased in amplitude during sleep. The maximum was usually in the occipital areas but occasionally in the frontal regions. The rhythm was more persistent and better seen in the magnetoelectroencephal

Epilepsy surgery for tuberous sclerosis.

Tuberous sclerosis complex is often associated with medically refractory epilepsy secondary to cortical tubers. Previous studies have identified an association between early seizure onset, greater seizure burden, and mental retardation in childhood. Early effective seizure control could therefore significantly reduce the adverse developmental effects of chronic epilepsy in tuberous sclerosis complex. In medically intractable epileptic patients, surgical treatment has been demonstrated to reduce or abolish seizures and the associated burden for the child and its environment. Epilepsy surgery ha

Neuromagnetic evidence for early semantic access in word recognition.

Magnetic brain responses recorded in the human magnetoencephalogram (MEG) distinguished between words with different semantics but carefully matched for frequency and length. Multiple recordings from a single subject showed that 100 ms following stimulus onset, significantly stronger neuromagnetic responses were elicited by words with strong multimodal semantic associations than by other word material. At this early processing step, there was a highly significant correlation (0.80) between the magnitude of brain responses to individual words recorded over parieto-occipital areas and their sema

Neurophysiology of fluent and impaired reading: a magnetoencephalographic approach.

This article reviews a series of magnetoencephalographic (MEG) experiments aimed at identifying cortical areas and time windows relevant or even critical for fluent reading. The approach was to compare single-word processing in fluent and dyslexic readers. The activations which differed between the two groups were then studied in more detail to determine their functional roles. In fluent reading, overall visual feature processing occurs about 100 milliseconds (ms) after seeing a word, in the posteromedial extrastriate cortex bilaterally. This activation does not differentiate between letters a

[Involuntary movements observed in a patient with Russian spring summer encephalitis].

A 38-year-old woman had an episode of headache, fever and convulsion in October, 1993. She became alert in two weeks, though weakness and atrophy remained in the upper limb muscles. She was diagnosed as Russian spring summer encephalitis (RSSE) based on several serological studies. Three kinds of involuntary movements were noted after recovery. These were spontaneous muscle jerks in the left arm, action tremor in the right arm and pathological associated-movement in the right leg. The movements were studied physiologically by electroencephalogram (EEG)-electromyogram (EMG) polygraphic recordin

Trigeminally triggered epileptic hemifacial convulsions.

We present whole-head magnetoencephalographic recordings from a patient suffering from trigeminally triggered left-sided hemifacial convulsions. The patient was a candidate for surgical treatment, but regardless of extensive scalp EEG, videotelemetry and PET recordings, an epileptic focus could not be identified. Magnetic signal distribution during a seizure suggested focal epileptic activity in the face area of the right primary motor cortex. A secondary focus was activated 22 ms later in the left hemisphere. Discharges could be triggered by sensory stimulation of the left lower gum. The simi

Multimodal MEG and Microstructure-MRI Investigations of the Human Hippocampal Scene Network.

Although several studies have demonstrated that perceptual discrimination of complex scenes relies on an extended hippocampal posteromedial system, we currently have limited insight into the specific functional and structural properties of this system in humans. Here, combining electrophysiological (magnetoencephalography) and advanced microstructural (multishell diffusion magnetic resonance imaging; quantitative magnetization transfer) imaging in healthy human adults (30 females/10 males), we show that both theta power modulation of the hippocampus and fiber restriction/hindrance (reflecting …

Using EEG and MEG to characterize extreme delta brush in a patient with anti-NMDA receptor encephalitis.

BACKGROUND: Extreme delta brush (EDB) is considered a potential marker for anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (anti-NMDAR) encephalitis. The brain regions involved in EDB are unclear. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old woman with anti-NMDAR encephalitis who was experiencing psychosis was admitted. Electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetoencephalography (MEG) were used to analyze EDB in the patient. EDB on EEG could be disturbed by opening and closing the eyes, by occipital alpha rhythms and by sleep-wake cycles. The MEG results showed beta activity originating from bilateral superior parietal l…

Multimodal approach in the surgical treatment of refractory epilepsy associated with tuberous sclerosis complex: a series of three cases.

We describe the surgical treatment of tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC)-related refractory epilepsy in three patients. All three had multiple daily seizures, and each had more than three cortical tubers. High-resolution magnetic resonance imaging, ictal and interictal scalp electroencephalogram (EEG), positron emission tomography, magnetoencephalography as well as acute and intracranial video-EEG were used to identify the epileptogenic tubers. After localization, five cortical tubers (two in the right temporal lobe in patient 1; one each in the left frontal and temporal lobes in patient 2; and …

Sensorimotor seizures of pediatric onset with unusual posteriorly oriented rolandic spikes.

BACKGROUND: Benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes (BECCT) is usually associated with anteriorly oriented rolandic discharges. We report an unusual type of childhood-onset epilepsy with sensorimotor seizures associated with posteriorly oriented rolandic discharges. METHODS: Among 942 patients who underwent simultaneous electroencephalography and magnetoencephalography (MEG) for epilepsy evaluation, we found 7 patients with sensorimotor seizures aged under 13 years at onset, with no abnormal magnetic resonance imaging findings, and posteriorly oriented rolandic discharges detect…

Group imaging of task-related changes in cortical synchronisation using nonparametric permutation testing.

Synthetic aperture magnetometry (SAM) is a nonlinear beamformer technique for producing 3D images of cortical activity from magnetoencephalography data. We have previously shown how SAM images can be spatially normalised and averaged to form a group image. In this paper we show how nonparametric permutation methods can be used to make robust statistical inference about group SAM data. Data from a biological motion direction discrimination experiment were analysed using both a nonparametric analysis toolbox (SnPM) and a conventional parametric approach utilising Gaussian field theory. In data f…

Same Sentences, Different Grammars, Different Brain Responses?: An MEG Study on Case and Agreement Encoding in Hindi and Nepali Split-Ergative Structures.

At first glance, the brain's language network appears to be universal, but languages clearly differ. Does the brain adapt to the specific details of individual grammatical systems? Here, we present a magnetoencephalography (MEG) study on case and agreement in Hindi and Nepali. Both languages use split-ergative case systems. However, these systems interact with verb agreement differently-in Hindi, case features conspire to determine which noun phrase (NP) the verb agrees with (subject, object, or neither), but in Nepali the verb always agrees with the subject NP. We found that NPs with differen…

Confirmation bias through selective readout of information encoded in human parietal cortex.

Decision-makers often process new evidence selectively, depending on their current beliefs about the world. We asked whether such confirmation biases result from biases in the encoding of sensory evidence in the brain, or alternatively in the utilization of encoded evidence for behavior. Human participants estimated the source of a sequence of visual-spatial evidence samples while we measured cortical population activity with magnetoencephalography. Halfway through the sequence, participants were prompted to judge the more likely source category. We find that processing of subsequent evidence …

Dynamic face-related eye movement representations in the human ventral pathway.

Multiple brain areas along the ventral pathway have been known to represent face images. Here, in a magnetoencephalography (MEG) experiment, we show dynamic representations of face-related eye movements in the ventral pathway in the absence of image perception. Participants followed a dot presented on a uniform background, the movement of which represented gaze tracks acquired previously during their free-viewing of face and house pictures. We found a dominant role of the ventral stream in representing face-related gaze tracks, starting from the orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) and anterior temporal…

Phase-dependent word perception emerges from region-specific sensitivity to the statistics of language.

Here, we show such a frequency bias in spoken word recognition using psychophysics, magnetoencephalography (MEG), and computational modelling. With MEG, we found a double dissociation, where the phase of oscillations in the superior temporal gyrus and medial temporal gyrus biased word-identification behavior based on phoneme and lexical frequencies, resp …
