Frequency of HER-2/neu receptor positivity and its association with other features of breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Carcinoma breast is the commonest malignancy of females all over the world and second leading cause of death due to cancer among females. In Pakistan it is more common at a young age contrary to the West where it is more common in old age (after 60 years). The objectives of this cross sectional study were to determine the frequency of HER-2/neu receptor over-expression and its association with some of the features of breast cancer like patient age, ER/PR status, tumour size, histological grade and axillary lymph node involvement. METHODS: This study was conducted at Surgical C Uni

[Breast cancer in men].

Breast cancer in men is rare and most often occurs at or after the age of 60 years. Prognosis is poor when it is discovered at a late stage, as it often is in men, although it should be easier to detect because men have so little breast tissue. The causal mechanism appears to depend on hormone metabolism abnormalities related to elevated estrogen or prolactin levels. A family history of breast cancer is found in 5-10% of cases. Infiltrating ductal carcinoma accounts for most cases (70-90%) of male breast cancers. In situ but not invasive carcinoma is exclusively ductal and accounts for 7% of c

Case Report: Rare gastric and bone metastases after early endocrine therapy discontinuation in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer: lessons and therapeutic insights.

Breast cancer with gastric metastasis is extremely rare. Non-persistence with adjuvant endocrine therapy is associated with increased recurrence/metastasis risk in hormone receptor-positive (HR+) breast cancer. A 33-year-old female was initially diagnosed with left breast cancer in July 2011, undergoing modified radical mastectomy, adjuvant chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and endocrine therapy (discontinued voluntarily after 1 year). In February 2025, she presented with low back pain and epigastric discomfort; examinations confirmed gastric and multiple bone metastases (ER+,PR+,HER2-). She receive

Perioperative management of anti-TIF1-γ dermatomyositis in a patient with breast cancer: a case report.

Dermatomyositis (DM) is a rare autoimmune disease, and its subtypes exhibit considerable heterogeneity in perioperative risk. The anti-transcription intermediary factor 1-gamma (TIF1-γ) antibody-positive subtype is particularly associated with an increased risk of underlying malignancy and poses unique anesthetic challenges because of its potential multisystem involvement. We report the perioperative anesthetic management of a 47-year-old woman with TIF1-γ antibody-positive DM complicated by breast cancer who underwent a modified radical mastectomy. The patient presented with classic cutaneous

Multidisciplinary management of necrotizing fasciitis as a postoperative complication after mastectomy in an adult male in a low- and middle-income country.

Necrotizing fasciitis, a rare, potentially life-threatening infection, often necessitates urgent medical intervention and surgical excision of the affected tissue. We present a 55-year-old male patient with a progressively enlarging lump in the left breast that was diagnosed as a breast carcinoma. Post-modified radical mastectomy, histopathological examination revealed Grade II invasive ductal carcinoma with neuroendocrine features. Due to financial constraints, the patient missed post-operative follow-ups and did not complete the prescribed radiotherapy sessions. Three months later, the patie

Ectopic thyroid tissue in the breast: A case report.

Ectopic thyroid tissue is a rare condition manifested as the appearance of thyroid tissue outside the thyroid gland. Here, we report a case of ectopic thyroid tissue in the breast. A 48-year-old Chinese woman who was diagnosed with breast cancer received modified radical mastectomy. A thyroid tissue was found on subsequent pathological examination. The ectopic thyroid tissue was confirmed by immunohistochemistry staining of thyroid biomarkers, including thyroglobulin, thyroid transcription factor-1, and thyroid peroxidase. Currently, abnormal thyroid anlage descent is the main theory to explai

Synchronous Luminal A Ductal Carcinoma In Situ in a Recurrent Benign Phyllodes Tumor Diagnosed Preoperatively: An Unusual Presentation of a Rare Neoplasm.

Phyllodes tumor (PT) is a rare benign tumor of the breast with a propensity to recur and metastasize. Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) within PT is an extremely rare finding and is usually diagnosed postoperatively. We present a case of a 36-year-old female with a recurrent lump in her left breast diagnosed as a benign PT. Preoperatively, aspiration cytology revealed DCIS within the known case of recurrent PT. Emergency left modified radical mastectomy was performed due to an uncontrolled sudden hemorrhage from the tumor. Postoperatively, hormonal therapy was started based on immuno-histopathol

Adrenal Gland Metastasis of Breast Invasive Mucinous Carcinoma: A Rare Case Report and Review of Literature.

The adrenal gland is a frequent site for metastasis, and the majority of the metastatic lesions of the adrenal gland normally originate from lung cancer, colon cancer, renal cell carcinoma, and melanoma. However, adrenal gland metastasis from breast invasive mucinous carcinoma is extremely rare. This report described a rare case of right adrenal gland metastasis in a 48-year-old female, who was diagnosed with breast invasive mucinous carcinoma and underwent right modified radical mastectomy with axillary lymph node dissection 5 years previously. A mass located on the right adrenal gland was de

Effect of ondansetron for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting after breast cancer surgery.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the preventive effect of preoperative administration of ondansetron on postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in patients receiving breast cancer surgery. METHODS: Data from 225 patients who received modified radical mastectomy from January 2019 to December 2020 were retrospectively reviewed. The patients were divided into an ondansetron group and a control group according to whether they received preoperative ondansetron or not. The incidence of PONV, visual analog scale (VAS) score, the rescue analgesics use and rescue antiemetic use, as well as the patient satisfac

Carcinoma of the Accessory Axillary Breast: A Diagnostic Dilemma and a Management Challenge.

Carcinoma of the accessory axillary breast is uncommon, with an incidence of 0.2 to 0.6%. We report a patient whose biopsy of a suspicious lesion in the axilla present for one year revealed invasive ductal carcinoma (IDC). There was presence of breast tissue and absence of lymphoid tissue in the biopsy, suggesting a breast malignancy. Magnetic resonance mammography was suggestive of the lesion well away from the normal breast, confirming an accessory axillary breast. She was offered wide local excision of the lesion with axillary lymph node dissection and modified radical mastectomy (MRM), and

Contralateral contiguous tuberculous lymphadenitis in a case of right breast carcinoma--Diagnostic dilemma.

Coexistence of tuberculosis (TB) in the breast or axillary lymph nodes with breast carcinoma though rare is not unknown. A 55-year-old woman presented with right axillary and left supraclavicular lymphadenopathies with no detectable lesion in either breasts or left axilla. Right axillary lymph node excision biopsy revealed metastatic adenocarcinoma. Diagnostic workup showed intense fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG)-avid lymph nodes on the left side neck at level V, supraclavicular, axillary, subpectoral and para-aortic regions, and low FDG activity in the right breast. Core biopsy of right breast lesio

Invasive breast carcinoma arising in microglandular adenosis: two case reports.

Microglandular adenosis (MGA) is a rare benign disease that shows an infiltrative growth pattern of small glands, and it may progress to include atypia and carcinoma. Here we report two cases of breast carcinoma arising in MGA. Case 1 was a 44-year-old woman with a previous history of ductal carcinoma in situ in her right breast. During a follow-up, a 1.8 cm mass-like lesion was found in her left breast. An excisional biopsy suggested that the lesion was breast carcinoma. Case 2 was a 57-year-old woman with a 2.9 cm mass in her right breast. A core needle biopsy of the lesion suggested invasiv

Perforated intestinal leiomyosarcoma as a metastasis of uterine leiomyosarcoma: a case report.

INTRODUCTION: Uterine leiomyosarcomas are relatively uncommon soft tissue neoplasms and rarely metastases to small bowel. In the current case; a patient is suffering from intestinal perforation due to metastatic leiomyosarcoma of the small bowel. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old woman underwent a modified radical mastectomy for infiltrating ductal cancer of the breast six years ago and a total abdominal hysterectomy for leiomyosarcoma of the uterus two years ago. About 2400 cGy total dose radiotherapy has also been applied after total hysterectomy for bone metastasis of breast cancer. She adm

Case of Cowden syndrome associated with eccrine angiomatous hamartoma.

Cowden syndrome, also known as multiple hamartoma syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by multiple hamartomatous tumors of ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal origin. A 47-year-old woman had a skin-colored plaque on the left foot. She had total abdominal hysterectomy due to uterine leiomyoma at the age of 35, and had modified radical mastectomy due to right breast cancer at 38. Thyroid adenoma was diagnosed at age 46. Physical examinations revealed macrocephaly, multiple papules of the buccal mucosa, skin tags of the neck and multiple keratotic papules of both hands.

Uterine metastasis from infiltrating ductal carcinoma of breast in a patient receiving tamoxifen.

The established relationship between tamoxifen and the development of endometrial cancer causes differential diagnostic problems between metastatic and primary uterine neoplasms. A 45-year-old woman underwent modified radical mastectomy because of left-breast cancer. She presented with abnormal vaginal bleeding 6 years later, while still on tamoxifen therapy. The endometrial curettage revealed undifferentiated adenocarcinoma. She underwent total abdominal hysterectomy, bilateral salphingoopherectomy as well as pelvic and periaortic lymphadenectomy. Microscopic examination revealed neoplastic c

Breast cancer during pregnancy.

The concurrent diagnosis of breast cancer and pregnancy is a challenging clinical situation that historically has placed the welfare of the mother in conflict with that of the fetus. Modified radical mastectomy, the preferred surgical option in women with breast cancer during pregnancy, can be accomplished with minimal fetal risk. Although breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy or quadrantectomy) can be performed, the radiation therapy required to complete local therapy for the breast must be delayed until after delivery because of the risks associated with fetal exposure to radiation. Although

T1 Breast Cancer Associated with Von Recklinghausen's Neurofibromatosis.

A rare case of breast cancer associated with von Recklinghausen s neurofibromatosis is reported. This case and review of the literature illustrate the problems of clinical diagnosis. A 66-year-old woman who had undergone sigmoidectomy for sigmoid colon cancer two years previously, was admitted to the hospital because of a left breast skinretraction in October, 1998. The patient had von Recklinghausen fs disease (neurofibromatosis type 1). The TNM clinical staging was T1cN0M0. Modified radical mastectomy was performed. The histopathological diagnosis of the breast tumor was invasive ductal carc
