Many people enjoy sports, it is healthy and relaxing. There is, however, an inherent risk of sustaining injuries and fractures of the maxillofacial skeleton. Adequate diagnostics and treatment are mandatory to minimize the possible long-term consequences of injuries. Dentists may become primary involved in the diagnosis of such traumas, particularly when injuries are limited to the orofacial region. In addition, they can play an important role in caring for sportsmen with orofacial injuries, for instance by endodontic, restorative, and prosthodontic treatments. This paper discusses the assessm

Gross maxillofacial injuries are challenging to manage because they can be complicated by airway obstruction, injuries to the cervical spine, and cranial structures. Deformities from such injuries have lasting psychological effects which if not addressed can be devastating. We present a 21-year-old male motorcyclist who was involved in a motor traffic collision and sustained avulsion and degloving of the forehead skin, left eyebrow, left upper and lower eyelids, the nose, the left cheek and part of the right cheek, upper and lower lips, and the skin overlying the chin. His airway was compromis…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Management of maxillofacial trauma in the geriatric population poses a great challenge due to anatomical variations and medical comorbidities. The aim of this study was to analyze the management variables, timing, and outcomes of facial fractures in elderly patients (aged 70 years or more) at several European departments of oral and maxillofacial surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was based on a systematic computer-assisted database that allowed the recording of data from all geriatric patients with facial fractures from the involved maxillofacial surgical units acros

Sternal fractures resulting from blunt chest trauma often present unique surgical challenges. While conservative management is common, cases with significant displacement, delayed union, or painful dyspnea may require surgical intervention to improve structural stability and relieve symptoms. Here, we report the case of a 46-year-old man who sustained a displaced sternal fracture in a motor vehicle accident. The fracture was complicated by posterior displacement of the proximal bone fragment, causing persistent chest pain and deformity that did not resolve with conservative treatment. The pati

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze trauma patients, ages 55 and older, sustaining multiple injuries including maxillofacial trauma. Factors influencing length of intensive care unit stay (ICUS) and length of total hospital stay were delineated and examined to determine if specific causes of increased length of stay could be elucidated, and, once known, if these causes could translate into recommendations tailored to the oral and maxillofacial surgery trauma practice.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: One hundred ninety-six patients, 55 years of age or older, who received either consultatio

Injuries to the lingual nerve remain a relatively uncommon event. However, given the frequency of surgical procedures in this anatomic region, it is likely that every oral and maxillofacial surgeon will be required to manage such an injury. When spontaneous recovery of lingual sensation is absent, microsurgical reconstruction can predictably achieve improved sensation in a majority of patients provided that such injuries are properly assessed and treated early. The quality of the sensory improvement is related to the age of the patient, the timing of surgery, the extent of the neural injury, a

The adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a sequel to pulmonary injury that may be direct, closed chest trauma or indirect, through air or vascular passages, aspiration, or fat embolization. An understanding of this syndrome is essential for the oral surgeon who not only manages severe maxillofacial injuries but is also a member of a trauma team that manages multisystem injuries. Emphasis on pathophysiologic pathways resulting in ARDS is presented with a discussion on oxygenation and ventilation abnormalities. Application of these guidelines will assist the oral surgeon in understandin…

We report a rare case of a right orbital roof blow-in fracture in a 40-year-old male with concomitant basal skull fracture and intracranial hemorrhage after a fall backward. Trauma, neurosurgery, ophthalmology, and maxillofacial surgery consultations were obtained. Conservative, non-surgical management was recommended for all injuries, and outpatient follow up for orbital fracture with no surgery offered.

The face is often the most exposed part of the body during athletic competition. This article concentrates on sports-related injuries to the zygoma and periorbital area, the maxilla, the nose, and the external ear. Discussions of the management of soft-tissue injuries and the diagnosis and treatment of underlying disruption of bone and cartilage are presented. A new piece of protective athletic equipment for the prevention of facial injuries to baseball players is introduced.

There are many different studies about the epidemiology and characteristics of maxillofacial fractures. In the authors' clinic a study was done regarding the characteristics of patients with maxillofacial fractures. 553 patients were investigated retrospectively. The causes, localizations, fracture types, treatments modalities, and complications were evaluated. The most common cause of maxillofacial fractures was traffic accidents (90.15%) followed by interpersonal violence (2.71%). The most common fracture site was the parasymphisis (30.9%) in mandibular fractures and the orbital rim in midfa

A retrospective review of 442 patients, seen by one maxillofacial unit over a twelve-year period, is presented. Data concerning the patients' demographics and the aetiology, pattern, treatment and complications of the fractures were obtained and evaluated. Approximately 72% of the patients sustained fractures from road traffic accidents and 39% of the fractures occurred in the 21-30-year range. There was a male preponderence and 8% of all cases had postoperative infections. Over 20% of the patients sustained associated body injuries and only one-third reported for treatment within 24 hours of

Maxillofacial injuries resulting from trauma can be a challenge to the Maxillo-Facial Surgeon. Frequent causes of these injuries are attributed to automobile accidents, physical altercations, gunshot wounds, home accidents, athletic injuries, work injuries and other injuries. Motor vehicle accidents tend to be the primary cause of most midface fractures and lacerations due to the face hitting the dashboard, windshield and steering wheel or the back of the front seat for passengers in the rear. Seatbelts have been shown to drastically reduce the incidence and severity of these injuries. In the …

BACKGROUND: Zygomatic complex fractures are prevalent among maxillofacial bone injuries due to the prominence of the zygomatic arch, which can significantly impact facial aesthetics and the ability to open the mouth. Although non-surgical interventions are available for mild cases, severe fractures necessitate surgical intervention. The surgical repair of zygomatic arch fractures poses a risk of injuring the temporal branch of the facial nerve (TBFN). This study aimed to develop a modern modification to reduce the probability of common complications.
METHOD: We conducted a retrospective study

Epistaxis following maxillofacial trauma or maxillofacial surgery is uncommon. It usually occurs within 24 hours of the injury and can usually be controlled by packing. Rarely internal maxillary artery ligation is necessary and embolization has been used in some cases of severe trauma. We present a case of severe late-onset epistaxis following Le Fort I osteotomy. The diagnostic approach and treatment are discussed.

The presence of retained foreign bodies in the maxillofacial region as a consequence of penetrating injuries from knives is poorly documented in the scientific literature. This manuscript reports the case of a 30-year-old Caucasian with a knife blade lodged in the maxillofacial skeleton. Following clinical and radiographic exams, it was determined that the object had penetrated through the left nostril and nasal septum, in the direction of the right maxillary sinus, and remained impacted without causing injury to important anatomical structures. After systemic assessment and determination of t
