BACKGROUND: The Gram-negative bacterium Yersinia pestis is the causative agent of the bubonic plague. Efficient iron acquisition systems are critical to the ability of Y. pestis to infect, spread and grow in mammalian hosts, because iron is sequestered and is considered part of the innate host immune defence against invading pathogens. We used a proteomic approach to determine expression changes of iron uptake systems and intracellular consequences of iron deficiency in the Y. pestis strain KIM6+ at two physiologically relevant temperatures (26 degrees C and 37 degrees C).

SIGNIFICANCE: Copper is an essential redox-active micronutrient, but failure of copper compartmentalization can convert it from a catalytic cofactor into a source of oxidative, proteotoxic, and mitochondrial stress. Tissue factor is a key enzyme in coagulation process. It is primary known as a cofactor for factor VIIa-mediated triggering of blood coagulation, which proceeds in a cascade of extracellular reactions. Tissue factor forms a catalytic complex with VIIa and intitiates coagulation by activating factor IX and X, ultimately resulting in thrombin formation. Being a transmembranic glycoprotein it takes a signalling information to another cell activity after endothelium or other tissue damage. Tissue factor plays a pivotal role in blood clotting physiology and pathology especialy in atherothrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare, mostly complement-mediated thrombotic microangiopathy. The majority of patients are infants. In contrast to infantile-onset aHUS, the clinical and genetic characteristics of adolescence-onset aHUS have not been sufficiently addressed to date.
METHODS: A total of 28 patients (21 girls, 7 boys) who were diagnosed as aHUS between the ages of ≥10 years and <18 years were included in this study. All available data in the Turkish Pediatric aHUS registry were collected and analyzed.

Neisseria meningitidis is a human-specific pathogen with capacity to cause septic shock and meningitis. It is well established that common genetic variants in CFH, CD46 and the CFHRs are additional risk factors for the development of aHUS. To examine the hypothesis that common variants in other complement genes have a similar effect we genotyped 501 SNPs in 47 complement genes in 94 aHUS patients from Newcastle, 126 aHUS patients from Paris, 374 UK controls and 165 French controls.
