OBJECTIVE: Temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) is typically associated with pathology of the hippocampus, a key structure involved in relational memory, including episodic, semantic, and spatial memory processes. While it is widely accepted that TLE-associated hippocampal alterations underlie memory deficits, it remains unclear whether impairments relate to a specific cognitive domain or multiple ones.
METHODS: We administered a recently validated task paradigm to evaluate episodic, semantic, and spatial memory in 24 pharmacoresistant TLE patients and 50 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. We car

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether neurodegenerative pathologies are differentially related to trajectories of change in different cognitive abilities.
METHODS: At annual intervals for up to 21 years, 915 older participants in a longitudinal clinical-pathologic cohort study completed a battery of 15 tests from which previously established composite measures of episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, and perceptual speed were derived. At death, they underwent a neuropathologic examination to quantify Alzheimer disease pathology, Lewy bodies, transactive response DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP

Theoretical models have suggested an association between the ongoing experience of the world from the perspective of one's own body and hippocampus-based episodic memory. This link has been supported by clinical reports of long-term episodic memory impairments in psychiatric conditions with dissociative symptoms, in which individuals feel detached from themselves as if having an out-of-body experience. Here, we introduce an experimental approach to examine the necessary role of perceiving the world from the perspective of one's own body for the successful episodic encoding of real-life events.

Cognitive and neuroimaging evidence suggests that episodic and semantic memory-memory for autobiographical events and conceptual knowledge, respectively-support different aspects of creative thinking, with a growing number of studies reporting activation of brain regions within the default network during performance on creative thinking tasks. The present research sought to dissociate neural contributions of these memory processes by inducing episodic or semantic retrieval orientations prior to performance on a divergent thinking task during fMRI. We conducted a representational similarity ana

Episodic memory is a critical cognitive function that enables the encoding, storage, and retrieval of new information. Memory consolidation, a key stage of episodic memory, stabilizes this newly encoded information into long-lasting brain "storage." Studies using fMRI to investigate post-encoding awake rest holds promise to shed light on early, immediate consolidation mechanisms. Here, we review fMRI studies during episodic memory to document common methods to investigate post-encoding consolidation, such as multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) and functional connectivity, and the current state

Post-encoding sleep plays an essential role in episodic memory consolidation. Much of the existing literature on sleep and memory relies on deprivation paradigms or laboratory-controlled sleep. Relatively few studies have examined how naturalistic post-encoding sleep relates to memory retrieval and its supporting neural activity, or whether age-related impairments in this sleep are linked to those in episodic memory. In the present study, we used actigraphy and electroencephalography to examine how post-encoding sleep quality relates to context memory performance and retrieval-related ERPs sup

The neuropsychological breakdowns of autobiographical memory (AM) in adults suffering from genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) are far from being understood and largely neglected. We aimed at identifying AM impairments in GGE by analyzing neurocognitive deficits in illness-related variables possibly affecting AM.Patients with GGE were compared to healthy controls (HCs), through semistructured interviews on AM, as well as neuropsychological measures to identify potential determinants of AM impairment.A single GGE group was formed by including patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME), juven

The study aim was to estimate the genetic contribution to individual differences in different forms of memory in a large family-based group of older adults. As part of the Late Onset Alzheimer's Disease Family Study, 899 persons (277 with Alzheimer's disease, 622 unaffected) from 325 families completed a battery of memory tests from which previously established composite measures of episodic memory, semantic memory, and working memory were derived. Heritability in these measures was estimated using the maximum likelihood variance component method, controlling for age, gender, and education. In

OBJECTIVE: Memory impairments form a major handicap for many neurological patients, including those with Korsakoff syndrome (KS). This study aimed to explore whether the perspective used in a visual lifelogging intervention, where visual recordings of daily activities are reviewed to support later retrieval, influence episodic memory retrieval. We compared the effects of first - versus third-person perspectives on episodic memory performance in KS patients.
METHODS: Three patients with KS participated in a controlled within-subject study with three experimental conditions: (1) review of first

Autobiographical memory (AM) has been studied extensively in different psychiatric disorders. However, less is known about AM in bipolar disorder (BD). Aim of the present study was to investigate BD patients' ability to recall episodic and semantic autobiographical memories after controlling for the effect of other possible neurocognitive deficits. Participants included 30 clinically remitted outpatients with BD type I and 30 healthy controls, matched for age, gender and educational level. Autobiographical memory was examined by the Questionnaire of Autobiographical Memory. Premorbid intellect

Converging evidence suggests a critical role for the parietal cortices in episodic memory retrieval. Here, we examined episodic memory performance in Corticobasal Syndrome (CBS), a rare neurodegenerative disorder presenting with early parietal atrophy in the context of variable medial temporal lobe damage. Forty-four CBS patients were contrasted with 29 typical Alzheimer's disease (AD), 29 healthy Controls, and 20 progressive supranuclear palsy patients presenting with brainstem atrophy as a disease control group. Participants completed standardized assessments of verbal episodic memory (learn

Episodic memories are (re)constructed, share neural substrates with imagination, combine unique features with schema-based predictions and show schema-based distortions that increase with consolidation. Here we present a computational model in which hippocampal replay (from an autoassociative network) trains generative models (variational autoencoders) to (re)create sensory experiences from latent variable representations in entorhinal, medial prefrontal and anterolateral temporal cortices via the hippocampal formation. Simulations show effects of memory age and hippocampal lesions in agreemen

Chronic pain affects approximately 20% of the world's population, exerting a substantial burden on the affected individual, their families, and healthcare systems globally. Deficits in autobiographical memory have been identified among individuals living with chronic pain, and even found to pose a risk for the transition to chronicity. Recent neuroimaging studies have simultaneously implicated common brain regions central to autobiographical memory processing in the maintenance of and susceptibility to chronic pain. The present review proposes a novel neurocognitive framework for chronic pain

In contrastive recommendation, representation quality depends not only on the encoder but also on sample construction: positives drive alignment and negatives enforce uniformity, shaping gradient strength, optimization stability, and data efficiency under sparse feedback. However, two key challenges have not been well explored in existing solutions: (i) how to obtain negatives that are simultaneously informative, fresh, and diverse, since random sampling yields weak gradients while static hardest only mining quickly becomes stale; (ii) how to safeguard against false negatives, where semantical

PURPOSE: Typical late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD) compromises episodic memory, the ability to encode new events and recollect past events. Much of the research on episodic memory in AD has relied on lab-based memory tasks (e.g., word lists, short stories). It is unclear how well these tasks characterize the impact of episodic memory impairments across different domains of everyday life, including conversational memory. The goal of the review was to establish what is known about conversational memory in AD, that is, memory for the content of conversations one overhears or in which one partic

INTRODUCTION: Prospective memory is the capacity to remember actions that are to be performed in the future. Different studies from experimental neuropsychology attempt to unravel the neurocognitive processes underlying event-based prospective memory, that is, delayed actions that take place in a predetermined context, which would play the role of an external cue and would therefore contribute to successful intentional recall.
DEVELOPMENT: Taking the dynamism and flexibility of multiprocess theory as a reference, the main findings have highlighted the fact that prospective memory is influence

Episodic memory may essentially be memory for one's place within a temporally unfolding scene from a first-person perspective. Given this, pervasively used static stimuli may only capture one small part of episodic memory. A promising approach for advancing the study of episodic memory is immersing participants within varying scenes from a first-person perspective. We present a pool of distinct scene stimuli for use in virtual environments and a paradigm that is implementable across varying levels of immersion on multiple virtual reality (VR) platforms and adaptable to studying various aspects

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: APOE4 is the strongest genetic risk factor of sporadic Alzheimer disease (AD), associated with greater β-amyloid (Aβ) deposition and accelerated cognitive decline, especially in episodic memory. However, it remains unclear whether this decline is driven by increased Aβ burden in APOE4 carriers or by greater susceptibility to Aβ-related effects. In this study, we examined whether the accelerated decline in episodic memory among APOE4 carriers is due to increased Aβ deposition or heightened susceptibility to Aβ-related effects.
METHODS: We analyzed data from individua

In normal aging, the cognitive domain of semantic memory remains preserved, while the domain of episodic memory declines to some extent. In Alzheimer's disease dementia, both semantic and episodic memory become impaired early in the disease process. Given the need to develop sensitive and accessible cognitive markers for early detection of dementia, we investigated among older adults without dementia whether item-level metrics of semantic fluency related to episodic memory decline above and beyond existing neuropsychological measures and total fluency score. Participants were drawn from the co
