Expression of prolactin and its receptor in the baboon uterus during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

PRL is known to be a major secretory product of the human decidua. However, the physiological role of decidual PRL during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy has not been fully defined, primarily due to the lack of an appropriate nonhuman primate model for in vivo studies. Therefore, this initial study examined the expression of PRL and its receptor in the baboon uterus during the cycle and pregnancy. PRL and PRL receptor messenger ribonucleic acid expression were detected by semiquantitative RT-PCR, and protein was localized by immunocytochemistry. PRL was shown to be expressed in myometrial sm…

Cocaine pharmacokinetics in men and in women during the follicular and luteal phases of the menstrual cycle.

Preclinical and clinical studies suggest that females may be less vulnerable to cocaine's toxic effects than males. The pharmacokinetics of intravenous cocaine (0.2 and 0.4 mg/kg) were measured in 12 men and 22 women with a history of cocaine abuse, matched with respect to age and body mass index (BMI). Women were studied during the follicular and the luteal phases of the menstrual cycle. There were no differences between men and women in pharmacokinetic measures [peak plasma cocaine levels (Cmax), elimination half-life (T 1/2 min), area under the curve (AUC)] or cardiovascular or subjective e…

Variation of the total amount of fluoride in blood of young women during the menstrual cycle.

We have previously reported the distribution and the forms of fluorides in the blood of men. This study is concerned with the distribution of fluorides in the blood of young women and sex-related differences in the fluoride metabolism related to the calcium metabolism keeping the postmenopausal osteoporosis in mind. The present study shows that women, aged 18 to 20 years, retain more fluorides in blood compared with men and that the nonionic fluoride level in blood varies during a menstrual cycle, whereas the ionic fluoride level is constant. Since fluoride has strong affinity for calcium, beh…

Localization of fibrillin-1 in human endometrium and decidua during the menstrual cycle and pregnancy.

We have examined the existence and distribution of fibrillin-1 within the endometrium and decidua to ascertain the effect of decidualization upon its synthesis, and its relationship to other extracellular matrix proteins. Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues were stained using monoclonal antibodies to collagen IV, elastin, fibrillin-1 and laminin, by immunocytochemistry. Fibrillin-1 was present throughout the menstrual cycle and appeared to be cell-associated. Similar staining for fibrillin-1 was detected within the Fallopian tube of ectopic pregnancy material. In first trimester, second …

Influence of the menstrual cycle on skin-prick test reactions to histamine, morphine and allergen.

The purpose of this study was to examine the possible influence of the phases of the menstrual cycle on dermal reactivity to skin-prick testing. We studied 15 atopic, menstruating women with seasonal rhinoconjunctivitis and/or asthma, with known sensitivity to olive and parietaria (mean age 25.2 years) and 15 non-atopic, healthy, female controls (mean age 24.7 years). Skin-prick tests with histamine, morphine, and in the atopic group with parietaria/and/or olive, were repeated three times during the same menstrual cycle, corresponding to bleeding (day 1-4), midcycle (day 12-16) and the late pr…

Changes in contact lens comfort related to the menstrual cycle and menopause. A review of articles.

Many women report changes in contact lens comfort during different phases of their menstrual cycle. Dryness and tearing, decreased visual acuity, swollen lids, foreign body sensations and visual coordination problems are examples of what may occur. This paper is a review of recent and older articles relating changes in contact lens comfort to modifications of the glands, conjunctiva and cornea of the eye during different phases of the menstrual cycle. Both high and low estrogen levels seem to affect the eye differently in various phases of the cycle. Some assumptions and predictions of what ma…

Premenstrual increase of intracellular magnesium levels in women with ovulatory, asymptomatic menstrual cycles.

Intracellular magnesium (Mg) levels regulate several enzymatic reactions and the hypoactivity of Mg has been involved in different pathological states. In addition to other factors, gonadal hormones, too, have been found to interfere in Mg balance. This study evaluates the changes in Mg in women throughout the normal menstrual cycle and those measured at weekly intervals in males. Magnesium and potassium (K) levels were measured in the plasma, red blood cells (RBC), lymphocytes (LC) and polymorphonucleated cells (PMN) of 11 normal menstruating women, in different periods of their menstrual cyc…

A computational systems biology view on the role of the menstrual cycle in endocrine health and disease.

In the era of personalized and precision medicine, sex is an important biological variable that needs to be taken into account in biomedical research. However, the role of the menstrual cycle has long been neglected because it requires clinical studies that are large, time-consuming, and expensive. A computational systems biology approach is a fundamentally different but powerful framework that explains how architectural features of the hormonal system, including feedback loops and cross-talk mechanisms, give rise to emergent behavior on the system level. Nevertheless, systems biology models t…

Exercise and physical activity changes during the menstrual cycle in users of the Flo app.

BackgroundCyclical hormonal fluctuations across the menstrual cycle influence physiological systems beyond the reproductive system, including cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and neurological systems, and are associated with changes in menstrual symptoms. These changes may influence physical activity behaviours and exercise performance; however, evidence remains limited. Digital health applications enable analysis of these patterns at scale using real-world longitudinal data.ObjectivesInvestigate how step counts and energy expenditure change over the follicular and luteal phases of the menstr…

Influence of the menstrual cycle and sex hormones on the response to genotoxic stress in human cells.

Although the menstrual cycle and sex hormones have been shown to influence the molecular response to drugs and chemicals, this phenomenon is still insufficiently examined. In this study, the effects of the menstrual cycle and sex hormones on the genotoxic stress response were investigated, with the focus on the activation of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerases (PARPs). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were isolated from blood collected from naturally cycling female donors (n = 10) at three phases of their menstrual cycle: (I) early follicular, (II) late follicular/ovulatory, and (III) mid-l…

The influence of sex hormones and the menstrual cycle on women's athletic performance: A literature review.

The cyclical nature of female sex hormones - primarily estradiol and progesterone - exerts a multidimensional influence on physiological processes relevant to sports performance. This narrative review summarizes the current understanding of how different phases of the menstrual cycle affect energy metabolism, cardiovascular dynamics, neuromuscular function, thermoregulation, and psychological responses in physically active women. Estrogen-dominant phases, especially the late follicular stage, are generally associated with enhanced aerobic capacity, improved vasodilation, mood stabilization, an…

Relationships between the menstrual cycle and neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms in females with Tourette syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The effects of the menstrual cycle on neuropsychiatric and physical symptoms have been examined in multiple psychiatric illnesses, but research on Tourette syndrome (TS) and menstruation is limited and inconclusive. One study published in 1992 reported that 34% of female respondents experienced tic fluctuations with their menstrual cycles; however, a subsequent 2001 study found no significant relationship between menstrual cycle-related hormonal changes and tic symptoms across participants. There has been no further published exploration of this topic in the intervening 20+ years, …

The effects of inorganic nitrate supplementation on muscular power and endurance across the menstrual cycle.

Oral inorganic nitrate ([Formula: see text]) supplementation increases nitric oxide (NO) bioavailability and may improve muscular power in males and females, although data in females are limited. Estrogen increases NO bioavailability and fluctuates throughout the menstrual cycle, with low levels in the early follicular (EF) phase and peaking during the late follicular (LF) phase. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of [Formula: see text] supplementation on isokinetic peak power, maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) force, muscular endurance, and recovery from …

The cervical transcriptome changes during the menstrual cycle but does not predict the window of implantation.

INTRODUCTION: The expression of genes in female reproductive organs is influenced by the cyclic changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. While the molecular changes in the endometrium that facilitate embryo implantation have been extensively studied, there is limited knowledge about the impact of the menstrual cycle on cervical cells. Cervical cells can be easily and routinely collected using a cytobrush during gynecological examination, offering a standardized approach for diagnostic testing. In this study we investigated how the transcriptome of cervical cells changes during the…
