Locked-in syndrome revisited.

The locked-in syndrome (LiS) is characterized by quadriplegia with preserved vertical eye and eyelid movements and retained cognitive abilities. Subcategorization, aetiologies and the anatomical foundation of LiS are discussed. The damage of different structures in the pons, mesencephalon and thalamus are attributed to symptoms of classical, complete and incomplete LiS and the locked-in plus syndrome, which is characterized by additional impairments of consciousness, making the clinical distinction to other chronic disorders of consciousness at times difficult. Other differential diagnoses are…

Regional Distribution of a Brain-Encysting Parasite Provides Insight on Parasite-Induced Host Behavioral Manipulation.

Some parasite species alter the behavior of intermediate hosts to promote transmission to the next host in the parasite's life cycle. This i … aliforniensis cysts are non-randomly distributed on the fish brain, aggregating on the diencephalon/mesencephalon region (a brain area involved in controlling reproduction and stress coping) and the rhombencephalon (an area involved in controlling locomotion and basal physiology). Determining causal mechanisms behind this pattern of localization will guide futu …

Meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri in cattle in southern Brazil.

This protozoon is occasionally … b, piriform lobes, hippocampus, frontal lobe cortex and fornix, along with severe thickening of the mesencephalon and rhombencephalon leptomeninges. Microscopically, severe multifocal necrosuppurative and hemorrhagic meningoencephalitis associated with a large quantity of amoebic trophozoites was present. The latter were confirmed to be Naegleria spp., through …

Effect of acute hypoxic shock on the rat brain morphology and tripeptidyl peptidase I activity.

Hypoxic events are known to cause substantial damage to the hippocampus, cerebellum and striatum. The impact of hypoxic shock on other brain … eatment periods. Morphological changes in cerebral cortex, cerebellum, medulla oblongata, thalamus, mesencephalon and pons were assessed using silver-copper impregnation for neurodegeneration. TPPI activity was biochemically assayed and localized by enzyme histochemistry. Although less vulnerable to oxidative stress, the studied brain areas showed different his …

The parkinsonian neurotoxin, MPP+ induces phosphorylated c-Jun in dopaminergric neurons of mesencephalic cultures.

The stress-activated protein kinase (SAPK) cascade serves a critical role in the apoptotic death of neuronal cells in response to a variety … lite of MPTP, to induce the phosphorylated form of c-Jun in dopaminergic neurons in nigral (ventral mesencephalon) cultures. At a dose of MPP+ that specifically induces apoptotic changes in nuclear morphology in tyrosine hydroxylase-positive (dopaminergic) cells in these cultures, MPP+ induces nuclear phospho-c-Jun immunoreactivity (IR). The peak induction of p …

Stage-specific expression of alkaline phosphatase during neural development in the mouse.

The expression pattern of tissue nonspecific alkaline phosphatase (TNAP) in the developing neural tube of mouse is reported. Homogeneous AP activity in the neuroepithelium becomes prominent at E8.5. At E9.5, distinctly AP-positive cells appear in the brain and spinal cord area. At stages E10.5 to E12.5, AP positivity is observed between the mesencephalon and the rhombencephalon, along the entire spinal cord and cranial nerves emerging from the myelencephalon. At E13.5, strongly AP positive fibers become prominent in the pons. At E14.5, AP expression in brain tissue is considerably reduced and …

CONCLUSION: IW in NPH is associated with reduced rrCB …

Cryopreservation of porcine fetal ventral mesencephalic tissue for intrastriatal transplantation in Parkinson's disease.

In this study we examined the efficacy of cryopreserving porcine fetal mesencephalic tissue. After microscopical dissection of the ventral mesencephalon (VM) from E28 pig fetuses, the collection of explants was randomly divided into two equal parts. One part was directly prepared as cell suspension. The other part was stored in hibernation medium for less than 2 days and then cryopreserved as tissue fragments and stored in liquid nitrogen. After 2 weeks up to 1 year, these tissue fragments were thawed and processed as cell suspensions. After cell counting and assessment of viability, these cel…

[Brain-stem cavernous hemangioma: surgical indications and approaches].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical indications and prognosis for cavernous hemangiomas (CHs) in the brain-stem. METHODS: From 1992 to 2000, 163 patients with intracranial CHs were operated on in our department. Among them, 14 patients (8 women and 6 men; mean age 42 years) had 15 CHs in the pons (12), mesencephalon (1) and medulla oblongata (1). Surgical indications for CHs are: progressive focal neurological deficits; hemorrhage; near the surface of the brainstem. Transvemian approach with midline suboccipital craniotomy was used for the lesions in the pons and medulla, near the floor of th…

Combined effects of GDNF, BDNF, and CNTF on motoneuron differentiation in vitro.

We have previously shown that glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), in addition to promoting the survival of dopaminergic neurons in cultures from embryonic rat ventral mesencephalon, also increases the activity of choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) in the cranial motoneurons present in these cultures (Zurn et al.: Neuroreport 6:113-118, 1994). By using the intermediate filament protein peripherin as a motoneuron marker, we report here that GDNF increases the number of motoneurons as well as the length of their neurites. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and ciliary neurotrop…
