Of 557 patients with occupational dermatoses seen at the Middle Road Hospital, Singapore, 55.7% (310) were irritant contact dermatitis, 38.6% (215) were allergic contact dermatitis and 5.7% (32) were non contact dermatitis. More than half of the patients were below 30 years old and most were from the construction (29.5%), metal/engineering (20.6%), electrical/electronic (16.4%), transport (5.5%) and food catering (3.8%) industries. Common occupational irritants included coolants, oils, cement, solvents, detergents and soldering flux. Chromates in cement was the most common occupational allerge

Metal occupational exposure limits mainly focus on total content of the respective metals of interest. The methods applied for trace metal analysis in occupational health and safety laboratories are usually standardized to pragmatic consensus digestion schemes, ensuring comparability of results. The objective of the present study entailed the evaluation of a recently developed HNO3-only microwave-assisted digestion procedure by comparison with the German consensus hot-block digestion and other national digestion schemes. An inter-laboratory comparison test with participation of nine national o

Humans are exposed to cobalt (Co) and chromium (Cr) from industry and surgical devices, most notably orthopedic joint replacements. This review compares the potential health effects of exposure to Co and Cr contaminants from these two different sources, both in the locally exposed tissues and at sites distant to the primary exposure. Surgical implantation results largely in exposures to ions, corrosion products, and particles of Co and Cr. Industrial exposures are predominantly to metal compounds and particles. Although there are large literatures on industrial and surgical exposures to these

The fly ash from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is known to contain heavy metals, polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs), polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs), polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and other organic materials. Heavy metals, PCDDs, PCDFs and PAHs reportedly cause oxidative stress in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we have measured the blood and urinary levels of several oxidative stress markers in MSWI workers and discuss herein whether the duration of engagement in jobs with exposure to MSWI fly ash is associated with these levels. The subjects were 81 male worke

BACKGROUND: Methylmercury exposure is a common health risk resulting from daily fish intake. However, studies addressing the link between methylmercury and infertility are limited and also inconsistent. In addition, no previous epidemiological studies have accounted for the interaction between methylmercury and selenium. We aimed to investigate the association between environmental exposures to metals and female fertility.
METHODS: This case-control study included 98 infertile women receiving fertility treatment (infertile group) and 43 female workers in their thirties (control group) who pro

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of short-term exposure to heavy metals (HM) extracted from PM10 on CB in workers' population in an outdoor space located in southern Iran during a dust storm. At first, 44 healthy and non-smoking workers were selected. Then PM10 and Blood samples were collected before and after the dust storm. Finally, HMs associated with PM10 measured by ICP-MS and its effect on the CB, including fibrinogen, CRP, TNF-α, and BP were estimated by ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and Odd Ratio (OR) in SPSS23. Based on the results, the concentration of PM10 and extracted HM such

The fumes and dust of trace elements and their compounds are very toxic and have been related to an increase in the incidence of diseases. Occupational exposure to toxic metals and metalloids can be determined by means of workplace air measurements and biological monitoring. The aim of our investigation was to determine the concentrations of As, Hg, and Se in urine samples under routine clinical laboratory conditions. To assess the reliability of these methods, critical factors such as detection limit(s), calibration range(s), cost, accuracy, and precision were studied. The method was employed

To reduce the risk of explosion oxyacetylene cylinders are filled with a spongy mass, acetone is added to saturate the mass, and acetylene is pumped into the cylinder. The first cylinders manufactured before 1936 used a kapok filling topped off with about 16 oz of crocidolite asbestos, with a metal gauze thimble inserted to reduce risk of flash back. Cylinders must be examined annually. The use of crocidolite ceased in 1972 and other fillings have been adopted since 1970; kapok cylinders now constitute less than 5% of the total stock. To assess possible hazards, a mortality study of workers fi

BACKGROUND: Human exposure to silica dust is very common in both working and living environments. However, the potential long-term health effects have not been well established across different exposure situations.
METHODS AND FINDINGS: We studied 74,040 workers who worked at 29 metal mines and pottery factories in China for 1 y or more between January 1, 1960, and December 31, 1974, with follow-up until December 31, 2003 (median follow-up of 33 y). We estimated the cumulative silica dust exposure (CDE) for each worker by linking work history to a job-exposure matrix. We calculated standardiz

Impalement injuries represent a rare but forensically relevant form of penetrating trauma that combines characteristics of both blunt and sharp force injury. The mechanisms and reconstruction of such injuries are often complex, particularly in the context of high-energy occupational accidents. Two fatal occupational cases with unusual impalement-like mechanisms are presented. In the first case, a construction worker was struck by a falling metal scaffold tube, resulting in a vertical cranial impalement with destruction of the occipital region and posterior skull base. In the second case, a wor

Pregnancy presents a unique risk to chemical researchers due to their occupational exposures to chemical, equipment, and physical hazards in chemical research laboratories across science, engineering, and technology disciplines. Understanding "risk" as a function of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability, this review aims to critically examine the state of the science for the risks and associated recommendations (or lack thereof) for pregnant researchers in chemical laboratories (labs). Commonly encountered hazards for pregnant lab workers include chemical hazards (organic solvents, heavy metals,

OBJECTIVES: Beryllium is primarily used in its metallic form, in alloys, or in beryllium oxide ceramics. Its physical and mechanical properties make it useful for many applications across a range of industries. Because beryllium is recognized as a sensitizing and carcinogenic agent, the management of occupational health for workers who may be occupationally exposed to beryllium has long been an important issue in the world. Under these circumstances, the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) had published a rule in January 2017, to prevent the development of chronic berylli

(1) Background: Airports workers are exposed to a mixture of airborne pollutants generated by aircraft operations, ground support equipment, road traffic, and indoor microenvironments. Indoor air quality, influenced by outdoor pollutant and ventilation dynamics, represents an important, but overlooked determinant of occupational exposure. Fine and ultrafine particulate matter (PM) can induce oxidative stress, inflammation, and xenobiotic responses, affecting not only the respiratory system, but also other organs. (2) Methods: This review examines the health effects of occupational exposure amo

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal System Disorders (MSDs) are a group of injuries that represent common occupational diseases and should be evaluated for prevention purposes because an increase has been observed due to the repetitive movements performed in the industry. This research was carried out in a manufacturing industry where metal parts are manufactured, and workers experience back and wrist pain.
OBJECTIVE: To prediagnose Musculoskeletal System Disorders (MSDs) and examine the relationship between temperature, demographic, and physiological factors in workers through predictive models, con

Workplace air is monitored for overall dust levels and for specific components of the dust to determine compliance with occupational and workplace standards established by regulatory bodies for worker health protection. Exposure monitoring studies were conducted by the International Copper Association (ICA) at various industrial facilities around the world working with copper. Individual cascade impactor stages were weighed to determine the total amount of dust collected on the stage, and then the amounts of soluble and insoluble copper and other metals on each stage were determined; speciatio

There is considerable epidemiological evidence that workers exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2) develop premature atherosclerosis leading to increased rates of coronary heart disease (CHD), but mechanisms underlying this association remain obscure. The present study documents that occupational exposure to CS2 modifies the oxidative status of plasma, which is a major determinant of the susceptibility to atherosclerosis. Concentrations of thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), which reflect lipid peroxidation processes in plasma, were determined in 29 men who were exposed to CS2 for more than

BACKGROUND: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are well-acknowledged pro-inflammatory chemicals, but their associations with blood cell-based inflammatory biomarkers need further investigation. Moreover, the effects and mechanisms of essential metals on PAH-related inflammation remain poorly understood.
OBJECTS: To elucidate the associations of PAHs on inflammatory biomarkers, as well as the effects and mechanisms of essential metals on these associations.
METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 1388 coke oven workers. We analyzed the modification effects of key essential meta

We report the clinical and neuroimaging findings of 4 men who worked in the production of inorganic metal tin ingot from organotin scrap who presented with similar episodes of reversible amnesia. T2-weighted-fluid-attenuated inversion recovery magnetic resonance imaging (FLAIR MRI) scans in 3 of the patients showed symmetric hyperintensity in the frontoparietal periventricular white matter and the corpus callosum, and reduced apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) based on diffusion weighted imaging (DWI). One patient had symmetric faint hyperintensity in the parietal periventricular white mat

The medical surveillance of the previously exposed to asbestos like method of retrospective appraisal of the exposure. The medical surveillance of the previously exposed to asbestos is effected on indication of the Competent Physician by the DL 257/2006. An aspect that often countersigns such typology of surveillance is the lack of relative data about past environmental asbestos exposure. There've been submitted to sanitary controls 140 subject employees in a steel metal company where in past activity of heavy carpentry has been developed. All the subjects have been submitted in the period 199
