Between 1917 and 2007, Alcoa operated an aluminum smelting plant in Badin, North Carolina, resulting in hazardous occupational and environmental exposures in West Badin, a predominantly Black community. We partnered with the Concerned Citizens of West Badin Community to document the experiences of prior employees and their families. The aim of present study was to estimate the nephrotoxicity of occupational exposure to heavy metals on albumin concentration and β-glucuronidase activity in the urine of smoking and non-smoking smelters. BACKGROUND: Eyes are frequently injured in occupational accidents. What is the preventive effect of mandatory eye protection in metalworking?
METHODS: The injury incidence was determined before and after eye protection became mandatory in a metalworking yard.
RESULTS: The incidence declined from 6.09 to 0.42 injuries per million working hours after eye protection became mandatory.
CONCLUSIONS: Mandatory eye protection among metalworkers in Norway has high potential for preventing eye injuries and should be implemented.

The risk of ischemic heart disease (IHD) has been studied in relation to working conditions encountered in a primary aluminum smelter employing over 6,000 men. During the period 1975-1983, 306 new cases of IHD were identified which were matched with 575 referents. A logistic regression analysis was performed to adjust for differences in smoking habits, high blood pressure, hyperglycemia, hypercholesterolemia, and obesity.
