To evaluate the long-term safety of implanting intraocular lenses (IOLs) in neonatal eyes using a nonhuman primate model, a one-piece all-polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) IOL was implanted into the posterior chamber of 21 neonatal Rhesus monkey eyes following a lensectomy and anterior vitrectomy. These monkeys then were monitored for 26 to 40 months for complications. The eyes from seven monkeys were studied histopathologically. We determined the cumulative survival rates, in arthroplasty of the knee, of three designs of tibial component, using a change of position on standard radiographs or revision for aseptic loosening as criteria of failure. The average migration of each of the three designs in the first postoperative year is known from roentgen stereophotogrammetric analysis reported by other authors. A standardized tension test was used to evaluate the adhesive properties of several composite materials when used on both dentin and enamel specimens. The nature of the test surfaces was examined by roughness tests using a Talysurf machine and also in more detail by means of a scanning electron microscope. Poor results were obtained for the adhesion of composite materials to dentin whereas good retention to enamel was obtained.
