The role of serotonin receptors in the inhibitory effect of serotoninergic system on immunogenesis was studied using cyproheptadine, a specific blocker of 5-HT2 receptors. It was shown that cyproheptadine administration to CBA mice stimulated the immune response, which was dopamine-dependent and was realized via thymus. With the pituitary stalk destruction, the stimulatory effect of cyproheptadine was not observed, which suggests the participation of 5-HT2 brain receptors in immunogenesis.

Induction of autoimmune thyroiditis in normal syngeneic CBA/J mice was achieved by injection of 72-hr concanavalin A (Con A)-induced lymphoblasts from donor mice which had been immunized with mouse thyroglobulin (MTg) emulsified with complete Freund's adjuvant (CFA). The choice of the type of instrument to measure delayed-type hypersensitivity (DTH) in mice, as assayed by ear swelling reactions, influences the experimental results. Progesteron and estradiol, administered in doses equivalent to those used for therapy caused a marked transient reduction of the thymus mass, but did not affect the cellularity of other lymphoid organs. Humoral and cellular immune response of the hormone-treated mice was normal at the time of thymus involution. The same was true for the stem-cell differentiation capacity. The remaining thymus cells after hormone treatment showed increased DNA-synthesis.

Infectious T lymphocytes were determined in thymuses and spleens of mice acutely infected with LCM virus. Such cells appeared in newborn animals, but their numbers declined when the age at infection increased and none were found in adult mice. Either susceptibility to LCM virus is associated with some degree of immaturity or the probability of murine T lymphocytes to encounter the virus as an infectious entity rather than an immunogen is higher in very young than immunologically mature mice.

The DNA and soluble and sedimental protein levels were studied in isoproterenol stimulated mouse submandibular salivary glands over a period of 200 h. Structure-activity relationship (SAR) models are important tools for predicting the skin sensitization potential of new compounds without animal testing. In compounds possessing a structural alert (aldehyde) and an activation alert (double bond), it is important to consider bioactivation/autoxidation (e.g., epoxidation). In the present study, we have explored a series of aldehydes with regard to contact allergy. The chemical reactivity of these 6 aldehydes toward a model hexapeptide was investigated, and their skin sensitization potencies were evaluated using the local lymph node assay (LLNA).

Fragrances are common causes of allergic contact dermatitis. beta-Caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene that is used as a fragrance chemical. Analogous to the monoterpenes R-limonene and linalool, it can be expected to autoxidize when air exposed.
