Mixed solid-state fermentation and microbial consortium improved the nutritional value of mulberry leaves and distillers' grains.

The rapid expansion of the livestock sector has precipitated a substantial surge in animal feed demand, necessitating immediate exploration and development of alternative feed sources to ensure sustainable supply. Mulberry leaves (ML) and distillers' grains (DG) are by-products generated from agriculture and industry in Sichuan, China. Characterized by abundant output and favorable nutritional composition, two materials can be further processed to alleviate the shortage of feed resources. In this study, four strains including Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Levilactobacillus brevi

Implications from distinct sulfate-reducing bacteria populations between cattle manure and digestate in the elucidation of H2S production during anaerobic digestion of animal slurry.

Biogas produced from the anaerobic digestion of animal slurry consists mainly of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2), but also includes other minor gases, such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S). Since it can act as a potent corrosive agent and presents a health hazard even at low concentrations, H2S is considered an undesirable by-product of anaerobic digestion. Sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRBs) have been identified as the main biological source of H2S in a number of natural, biological, and human-made habitats, and thus represent likely candidate microorganisms responsible for the production of H2S

Development of an attached-growth process for the on-site bioremediation of an aquifer polluted by chlorinated solvents.

A procedure for the design of an aerobic cometabolic process for the on-site degradation of chlorinated solvents in a packed bed reactor was developed using groundwater from an aquifer contaminated by trichloroethylene (TCE) and 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (TeCA). The work led to the selection of butane among five tested growth substrates, and to the development and characterization from the site's indigenous biomass of a suspended-cell consortium capable to degrade TCE (first order constant: 96 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 30 °C and 4.3 L gprotein(-1) day(-1) at 15 °C) with a 90 % mineralization o

[Oxidation of sulfur-containing substrates by aboriginal and experimentally designed microbial communities].

Aboriginal and experimental (constructed of pure microbial cultures) communities of acidophilic chemolithotrophs have been studied. The oxidation of elemental sulfur, sodium thiosulfate, and potassium tetrathionate as sole sources of energy has been monitored. The oxidation rate of the experimental community is higher as compared to the aboriginal community isolated from a flotation concentrate of pyrrhotine-containing pyrite-arsenopyrite gold-arsenic sulfide ore. The degree of oxidation of the mentioned S substrates amounts to 17.91, 68.30, and 93.94% for the experimental microbial community

Using electron balances and molecular techniques to assess trichoroethene-induced shifts to a dechlorinating microbial community.

This study demonstrated the utility in correlating performance and community structure of a trichloroethene (TCE)-dechlorinating microbial consortium; specifically dechlorinators, fermenters, homoacetogens, and methanogens. Two complementary approaches were applied: predicting trends in the microbial community structure based on an electron balance analysis and experimentally assessing the community structure via pyrosequencing and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR). Fill-and-draw reactors inoculated with the DehaloR^2 consortium were operated at five TCE-pulsing rates between 14 an

[Effects of Passivators on the Community Structure of Key Functional Microorganisms for Nitrogen Transformation in Cadmium-contaminated Soil].

The application of passivators represents a typical remediation strategy for soil heavy metal pollution, a process that not only affects hea … relations with pH. By elucidating how passivators (particularly lime) significantly restructure key microbial consortia involved in soil nitrogen transformation, this study provides a theoretical foundation for understanding the mechanisms through which passivators influence nitrogen cycling processes in Cd-contaminated soils.

Deciphering the Link Between Gut Bacterial Community Structure of Forest Musk Deer (Moschus berezovskii) and Musk Traits.

Musk, a precious traditional Chinese medicine, is secreted by the male forest musk deer (Moschus berezovskii). The gut microbiota plays an essential role in host metabolism, yet its relationship with musk traits remains poorly understood. Here, 16S rRNA sequencing of 89 fecal samples was integrated with musk quality (color and moisture) and yield data to investigate how fecal bacterial communities influence these traits. Distinct microbial consortia were associated with musk traits. Aromatic and sulfur-metabolizing taxa (norank_f_Actinomycetaceae, Nocardioides, Rhodococcus, and Mailhella) were…

Biosynthetic origin of anticancer dolastatin 15 reveals a noncanonical NRPS architecture enabling 2-keto acid activation.

Elucidating the biological origins and biosynthetic pathways of marine natural products remains a major challenge, particularly for compounds derived from microbial consortia. Here, we identify the marine cyanobacterial genus Dapis as the source of the potent anticancer natural product dolastatin 15 using genome-resolved metagenomics. Reconstruction of two complete and two near-complete genomes provides genome-resolved characterization of the genus Dapis, revealing extensive biosynthetic potential. Genome mining identified the dolastatin 15 biosynthetic gene cluster. Subsequent analyses recons…

Butyrate-Producing Bacteria in Intestinal Disease Therapy: Potential and Challenges.

Butyrate-producing bacteria have emerged as keystone species whose metabolic activity orchestrates host-microbial homeostasis in the human gut. This review synthesizes current understanding of how these anaerobic Firmicutes, including Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Roseburia spp., and Eubacterium rectale, function as key contributors to intestinal health through convergent mechanisms: serving as the primary energy source for colonocytes, enforcing mucosal hypoxia that excludes facultative pathogens, and modulating immunity via histone deacetylase inhibition and G-protein-coupled receptor signal

Targeting the gut microbiome in inflammatory bowel disease: from concept to clinical reality.

The gut microbiota, a complex community of trillions of microorganisms inhabiting the human gastrointestinal tract, has emerged as a critical regulator of immune homeostasis and gastrointestinal health. In the context of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), comprising primarily Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, disruptions to this microbial ecosystem-collectively termed dysbiosis-have been increasingly recognized as central to disease pathogenesis. Recent research has established that alterations in gut microbiota not only reflect disease states but may actively drive immune dysregulation,

Understanding nonylphenol's aquatic fate: An integrated review of partitioning, natural attenuation, and contribution mechanism.

Nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine-disrupting chemical extensively used in industry, poses significant ecological risks due to its widespread presence in aquatic systems. NP's environmental occurrence and risk requires a comprehensive assessment of its fate, governed by interconnected natural processes (adsorption, photodegradation, mineralization, biodegradation, chemical oxidation, and sedimentation). These processes are driven to varying degrees by various abiotic factors (light, oxygen, organic matter, reactive oxygen species, metals) and microbial communities (bacteria, fungi, microalgae, and
