Diet and serum micronutrients in relation to cervical neoplasia and cancer among low-income Brazilian women.

Cervical cancer is a leading cancer among women in developing countries. Infection with oncogenic human papillomavirus (HPV) types has been recognized as a necessary cause of this disease. Serum carotenoids and tocopherols have also been associated with risk for cervical neoplasia, but results from previous studies were not consistent. We evaluated the association of serum total carotene and tocopherols, and dietary intakes with the risk of newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grades 1, 2, 3 and invasive cancer in a hospital-based case-control stud

Coordination and speciation of cadmium in corn seedlings and its effects on macro- and micronutrients uptake.

The effect of cadmium (Cd) on both the absorption of important nutrients and the synthesis of low molecular weight thiols (LMWTs) was investigated in corn plants. The inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy results demonstrated that the concentration of Cd in tissues (mainly in roots) increased as the concentration in the medium increased. In addition, the concentration of phosphorus increased in roots of Cd treated plants but remained at normal concentration in shoots. On the other hand, the uptake of sulfur (S) followed a similar trend as the Cd uptake. The concentration of

Micronutrients deficiencies and its correlation with the soil-transmitted helminthic infections among children and non-pregnant women in Nepal: findings from Nepal national micronutrient status survey.

Despite having a high risk of soil-transmitted helminths (STHs) infection, no national level study has been conducted to assess incidence and correlates of STHs in Nepal. Thus, we hypothesized that micronutrients and social status are linked with incidence of STHs infection among 6-59 months children and 15-49 years non-pregnant women in Nepal and Kato-Katz technique was adopted to measure the type and intensity of STHs infections using fresh stool specimens and venous blood was used to examine micronutrients biomarkers. Anthropometric measurements such as height and weight, sociodemographic a…

Effect of long-term intermittent supplementation with multiple micronutrients compared with iron-and-folic acid supplementation on Hb and micronutrient status of non-anaemic adolescent schoolgirls in rural Bangladesh.

The present study examined whether long-term supplementation with once- and twice-weekly multiple micronutrients (MMN-1 and MMN-2) can improve Hb and micronutrient status more than twice-weekly Fe-folic acid (IFA-2) supplementation in non-anaemic adolescent girls in Bangladesh. An equal number of 324 rural schoolgirls aged 11-17 years were given MMN-1 or MMN-2 or IFA-2 supplements for 52 weeks in a randomised, double-blind trial. Blood samples were collected at baseline, and at 26 and 52 weeks of supplementation. The girls receiving IFA-2 supplements were more likely to be anaemic than the gir…

Medication-induced Micronutrient Deficiencies in Early-stage Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing global health burden, with early-stage patients often managed through long-term pharmacotherapy. However, prolonged use of common medications may unintentionally disrupt micronutrient balance, compounding the metabolic and cardiovascular risks already present in CKD. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review aims to explore the associations between frequently prescribed medications and the development of micronutrient deficiencies in early-stage, non-dialysis CKD patients, highlighting underlying mechanisms, clinical implications, and potential man

Protein and Micronutrient Intake After Two Years of Sapropterin Treatment in PKU.

Background: Sapropterin allows dietary liberalisation in responsive individuals with phenylketonuria (PKU), increasing natural protein intake and reducing dependence on protein substitutes (PSs). As PSs provide essential micronutrients, dietary liberalisation may increase the risk of nutritional insufficiency. Evidence describing detailed micronutrient intake in sapropterin-treated children remains limited. Methods: This secondary analysis evaluated dietary protein and micronutrient intake after 24 months of sapropterin treatment in 21 responsive children from a prospective longitudinal study.…

Adolescent Acceptability of School and Home Micronutrient Supplementation and Nutrition Curriculum in Mozambique.

Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency and a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) globally. Although multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) provides a broader range of micronutrients than iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) prior to conception, the acceptability of MMS and home-based supplementation strategies remains underexplored. We assessed the acceptability of MMS, IFAS, and a contextualized nutrition curriculum delivered via school clubs in a two-arm cluster-randomized trial across three rural s…

Micronutrient Deficiencies as Early Signs of Celiac Disease: Exemplified by Two Cases.

Celiac disease is an important yet often overlooked condition that, when left untreated, can lead to intestinal villous atrophy, resulting in malabsorption and nutritional deficiencies. The clinical presentation of celiac disease varies greatly and is not limited to gastrointestinal symptoms. The diverse clinical picture and nonspecific manifestations can lead to difficulties in the diagnostic process and a delay in diagnosis. In this article, we discuss two cases in which the diagnosis was established-but very late. The first case presents a woman who experienced symptoms for more than 10 yea

The Role of Iron as a Micronutrient in Key Biological Functions, Health and Diseases in Human.

Iron is a key micronutrient essential for the function of many enzymatic and non-enzymatic proteins that carry out a diverse set of biological functions, including erythropoiesis, oxygen transport, cellular respiration and immunity. Iron levels are tightly maintained in the human body, while reduced or excess amounts of iron can lead to many different health concerns. Despite the numerous approaches, including iron supplementation, currently being employed at both the individual and community levels to address iron deficiency, it is still a global health concern that primarily affects lower-in

Nutrition and Micronutrient Interactions in Autoimmune Thyroid Disorders: Implications for Cardiovascular Health.

Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating metabolism and cardiovascular function, with even mild dysfunction-such as subclinical hypothyroidism-negatively impacting heart health. While previous studies have confirmed the effects of iodine, selenium, and vitamin D on thyroid regulation and inflammation, the combined role of these nutrients in reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk in autoimmune thyroid disorders remains insufficiently understood. This review explores the influence of specific micronutrients-including selenium, iodine, and zinc-and dietary patterns, particularly the…
