We studied seven cases of severe gram-negative microbial keratitis associated with the use of contaminated topical ocular medications. Five cases involved Pseudomonas aeruginosa, one involved Serratia marcescens, and one involved Proteus mirabilis. In each case the same organism was cultured from corneal scrapings and from the medication. Either prednisolone acetate (one case) or timolol maleate (seven cases) was implicated in all instances.

The authors present the case of a 78-year-old woman who developed right lower-extremity paralysis after a focal seizure. Neuroradiological studies revealed a small parasagittal meningioma, which at the time of resection was found to contain a bacterial intratumoral abscess secondary to Proteus mirabilis. This is only the second reported case of intratumoral abscess formation in a meningioma and the first such occurrence to be reported in an otherwise healthy, immunocompetent individual.

A 52-year-old man with flank pain on the right side presented to the emergency room. A computer tomography of the abdomen showed a right ureterolithiasis with 3.5 mm stone in the proximal ureter with consecutive grade 2 hydronephrosis. After standard treatment of the right ureterolithiasis, there was a relapse on the left side and throughout the entire upper and lower urinary tract with struvite stones due to a persistent infection with Proteus mirabilis.

Indole negative Proteus species are invariably incorrectly identified as Proteus mirabilis, often missing out isolates of Proteus penneri. We report a case of extended spectrum beta lactamase producing and multidrug-resistant P. penneri isolated from pus from pressure sore of a patient of road traffic accident. Correct and rapid isolation and identification of such resistant pathogen are important as they are significant nosocomial threat.

In contrast to the findings in newly caught babboons in Africa, the leading cause of death in captivity in America was a pneumonia and enteritis complex. Bacterial species such as Proteus morgani, Proteus mirabilis, Clostridium sp., Pseudomonas paracolon, pathogenic Escherichia coli and cocci have been isolated in association with a pneumoenteric syndrome of 35 newborn baboons, including neonates.
