Sociodemographic characteristics and risk factor analysis of Demodex infestation (Acari: Demodicidae).

To identify sociodemographic characteristics and risk factor of Demodex infestation, 756 students aged 13-22 years in Xi'an, China were sampled for the school-based cross-sectional study. Demodex was examined using the cellophane tape method (CTP). The results showed that the total detection rate of Demodex was 67.6%. Logistic regression analysis revealed that five variables (gender, residence, sharing sanitary ware, frequency of face-wash per day, and use of facial cleanser) were found to be uncorrelated with Demodex infestation, whereas three variables (age, skin type, and skin disease) were

Spatial and temporal turnover of parasite species and parasite-host interactions: a case study with fleas and gamasid mites parasitic on small mammals.

We studied patterns of ectoparasite species turnover and pairwise ectoparasite-host interactions across space and time in fleas and mites harboured by small mammals using a novel metric, zeta diversity (similarity between multiple communities). We asked whether the zeta diversity of parasites and their interactions with hosts follow a similar spatial or temporal trend. We found substantial differences in some (zeta decline and retention rate) but not in other (zeta decay) spatial patterns of zeta diversity between species and interactions, whereas the differences between the patterns of the te

Arthropod parasites of the red-bellied squirrel Callosciurus erythraeus introduced into Argentina.

The introduction of an exotic species usually modifies parasite-host dynamics by the import of new parasites or the exotic species' acquiral of local parasites. The loss of parasites may determine the outcome of an invasion if the introduced species is liberated from co-evolved parasites in its range of invasion. In addition, an introduced species may pose sanitary risks to humans and other mammals if it serves as a reservoir of pathogens or carries arthropod vectors. The red-bellied squirrel, Callosciurus erythraeus (Pallas) (Rodentia: Sciuridae), was introduced into Argentina in 1970, since

The presence of quill mites (Gabucinia bicaudata) and lice (Struthiolipeurus struthionis) in ostrich wing feathers.

Quill mites (Gabucinia bicaudata) and lice (Struthiolipeurus struthionis) may infest ostrich feathers, resulting in skin damage, pruritus and excessive feather preening and loss. Four different feather types (prime white, femina extra wide, femina class 1, and femina short; n = 10) were collected. The quill mites and lice were removed with fine forceps, studied using a photographic optical microscope and counted microscopically at x 100 magnification following collection by sedimentation. They were placed in separate Petri dishes containing lactophenol solution and examined (x40 magnification)

Immuno-allergological aspects of scabies. A comparative study of spontaneous blastogenesis in the dermal infiltrates of common and hyperkeratotic scabies, allergic contact dermatitis and irritant dermatitis.

By means of planimetric analysis and determination of 3H-thymidine labelling indices of mononuclear cells infiltrating the dermis, it has been suggested that the cellular arm of the immune system is activated after infestation of the human host's skin by the scabies mite. Subtle modifications of host-parasite relationships may explain why a single pathogenetic agent (i.e. the scabies mite) is able to evoke such a wide range of clinical lesions in the host.

Human Infestation with Dermanyssus gallinae (Acari: Dermanyssidae) in a Family Referred with Pruritus and Skin Lesions.

The poultry red mite, Dermanyssus gallinae is one of the most economically important ectoparasites in hens and some species of mammals worldwide. Cases of human infestation have been reported worldwide. In this study we report infestation in three members of a family referred with pruritus and allergic dermatitis rash. They have collected very small animals and carried them to the laboratory which later was confirmed as D. gallinae. They claimed that they had been bitten with this ectoparasite. This is the first case report of human infestation owing to D. gallinae from Iran.

Pig handler's itch.

Forty-six humans who contacted pigs infested with Sarcoptes scabiei were investigated. Thirty (65.2%) had symptoms of sarcoptes scabies, and S. scabiei mites could be recovered from 20 (66.6%) skin scrapings. Itching was the main symptom. People within the age group of 26-35 years were infested the most. Hands and legs were the most common sites of the lesions, which subsided within 2-3 weeks when the infested pigs were treated and the intimate contact with the pigs was prevented.

Endemic mite-transmitted dermatoses and infectious diseases in the South.

Mites are mostly ubiquitous, bothersome pests with few species of medical importance and, of these, most are scabies mites, trombiculid larval mites and animal and plant mites. All patients with scabies and their close household, institutional and sexual contacts should be informed that scabies is a highly transmissible ectoparasitic infestation and that several topical treatments and an effective oral treatment are readily available and highly effective at present. Sexually active patients with scabies should be screened for other sexually transmitted diseases, particularly human immunodefici

The predatory mite Pronematus ubiquitus curbs Aculops lycopersici damage under greenhouse conditions.

BACKGROUND: The tomato russet mite, Aculops lycopersici, is a major worldwide pest infesting tomato crops for which only few control methods are available. At present, no commercialized beneficial organism has proven to be an effective biological control agent of the pest. As there is a strong need to develop alternatives to synthetic insecticides, we assessed the efficacy of an iolinid mite, Pronematus ubiquitus, as a preventive method against A. lycopersici in comparison with a curative treatment in a replicated experiment in the greenhouse. RESULTS: After pre-establishment of P. ubiquitus

An exploratory study to assess the activity of the acarine growth inhibitor, fluazuron, against Sarcoptes scabei infestation in pigs.

BACKGROUND: The most common treatments for scabies in human and veterinary settings are topical 5% permethrin or systemic treatment with ivermectin. However, these treatments have very little activity against arthropod eggs, and therefore repeated treatment is frequently required. In-vitro, biochemical and molecular studies have demonstrated that human mites are becoming increasingly resistant to both acaricides. To identify alternate acaricides, we undertook a pilot study of the in vivo activity of the benzoylphenyl urea inhibitor of chitin synthesis, fluazuron, in pigs with sarcoptic mange.

Prey preference, intraguild predation and population dynamics of an arthropod food web on plants.

The theory of intraguild predation (IGP) largely studies effects on equilibrium densities of predators and prey, while experiments mostly concern transient dynamics. We studied the effects of an intraguild (IG) predator, the bug Orius laevigatus, on the population dynamics of IG-prey, the predatory mite Phytoseiulus persimilis, and a shared prey, the phytophagous two-spotted spider mite Tetranychus urticae, as well as on the performance of cucumber plants in a greenhouse. The interaction of the predatory mite and the spider mite is highly unstable, and ends either by herbivores overexploiting

The role of cuticular compounds in the resistance of honey bees (Apis mellifera) to tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi).

This study examined the migration of tracheal mites (Acarapis woodi) into honey bees (Apis mellifera) from different colonies and the relative attraction of mites to hexane extracts from the external body surfaces of young bees. Relative resistance of bees from different colonies initially was assessed with a field bioassay that involved tagging newly emerged bees, pooling them in heavily mite-infested colonies, retrieving them 7 days later, and examining them for tracheal mite prevalence and abundance. For those colonies identified as most resistant and least resistant, cuticular chemicals we

Fatal Sarcoptes scabiei and Demodex sp. co-infestation in wolves (Canis lupus) at the Białowieża National Park, Poland - is it a consequence of climate change?

INTRODUCTION: In winter 2021/2022, a wolf population in the primeval Białowieża Forest in Poland was struck by an outbreak of severe mange caused by mixed infestations of Sarcoptes and Demodex mites. We present an epidemiological analysis of this mange which caused significant morbidity and mortality. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten sites known for wolf activity were monitored by camera trapping. A diagnostic necropsy and testing of a young wolf was performed to determine the causes of death. RESULTS: Five young wolves with severe alopecia of the entire body and some other individuals with minor t

Lynxacarus radovskyi infestation in a cat.

An adult domestic short-hair cat from south Texas was examined because of excessive dandruff on the back, neck, thorax, and hind limbs. Removal of a few hairs for microscopic evaluation revealed Lynxacarus radovskyi, the cat fur mite. The small (< 0.5 mm) mite could be readily identified by its laterally compressed body and its characteristic grasping of the hair shaft between the gnathosoma and palpi. Thus far, this mite has been identified as a parasite of cats in warm, humid environments. The number of parasites and apparent discomfort in cats varies considerably, from massive infestation w

Generalized knemidokoptic mange (Micnemidocoptes sp.) in a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) from Arkansas, USA.

This report describes a case of generalized knemidokoptic mange caused by Micnemidocoptes sp. in a bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus). In June 2024, an adult male eagle from Polk County, Arkansas, presented with severe skin disease and in a moribund state. The eagle died soon after capture and postmortem examination revealed extensive skin hyperkeratosis with embedded mites. Molecular analysis of a 632 bp fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) gene showed the mite was 99.8 % similar to a Micnemidocoptes sp. from a golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) in California and

Ectoparasite impacts on Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi under natural conditions.

To assess ectoparasite impact on individuals and populations of Gerbillus andersoni allenbyi under natural conditions, I addressed the following questions. Do ectoparasites affect their host fitness and, if so, how? Do ectoparasites affect host population level? Does this parasite-host interaction support the traditional concept of parasite evolution towards avirulence? For this purpose, host infestation, infection, survival, haematological indices, and physical condition were recorded. A field experiment which included manipulating host infestation while recording host survival was conducted
