["If you're no longer able to get out and about …" Validity and differentiation of the concepts of being homebound, wheelchair-bound and bedridden: A Delphi study].

INTRODUCTION: Being place-bound, including the dimensions of being homebound, wheelchair-bound and bedridden, has multifactorial consequence … ollowing six characteristics was developed: life-space confinement, in need of help, powerlessness, mobility limitation, endurance, weakness. The aim of this study was to test the concept by differentiating and validating the dimensions of the model with regard to characteristics, antecedents, and risk factors. METHOD: Concept testing was carried out employing the D …

Reliability and Validity of the UMove Mobility Screen.

Background: The UMove Mobility Screen (UMove) was developed to help bedside nurses accurately assess patient's mobility. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to assess reliability and validity of the UMove. Methods: Interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and alpha coefficient was completed to assess was based on internal consistency and inter-rater reliability. Construct validity was determined by ICC using two-way random model. Results: Among the 176 participants the mean age was 57 years (SD = 15), and 60% were men (N = 105). Internal consistency and inter-rater reliability were accep

Long-term unsupervised mobility assessment in movement disorders.

Mobile health technologies (wearable, portable, body-fixed sensors, or domestic-integrated devices) that quantify mobility in unsupervised, daily living environments are emerging as complementary clinical assessments. Data collected in these ecologically valid, patient-relevant settings can overcome limitations of conventional clinical assessments, as they capture fluctuating and rare events. These data could support clinical decision making and could also serve as outcomes in clinical trials. However, studies that directly compared assessments made in unsupervised and supervised (eg, in the l

Considerations and Practical Options for Measuring Muscle Strength: A Narrative Review.

Muscle strength impairments are related to mobility limitations and other untoward outcomes. This narrative review, therefore, describes considerations relative to the definition and measurement of muscle strength. Thereafter, practical options for measuring muscle strength are described and their clinimetric properties are delineated. Information provided herein may help students, clinicians, and researchers select the strength tests best suited to their research needs and limitations.

Promoting independent ambulation: A case study of an elementary school student with developmental disabilities.

The limited independent ambulation of individuals with developmental disabilities may be improved with the utilization of support walker devices. In the present study, a forward chaining procedure with an embedded changing criterion component was used to teach an elementary school student with multiple disabilities to acquire and maintain the skills needed to use his walker device successfully, and to increase his total distance walked while using his walker device. Results indicated that the student quickly acquired three of the four requisite steps necessary to use the walker device, but eve

Understanding the Lived Experience of Five Individuals with Mobility Aids.

The aim of our research is to understand the lived experience of people with mobility aids: How do people use their mobility aids and what is their lived experience with them? What problems do mobility aid users have outside the clinic? Our goal is to further study the needs of mobility aid users, mainly wheelchair, walker and prosthesis users, and furthermore, develop a technology platform and an application that supports more independent life for mobility aid users. In our study we interviewed five individuals about their experiences of using mobility aids. The aim was to recognize the main

Psychogenic limp in a child: are we aware of it?

A 10-year-old child presented with a limp for 9 months. The child was keeping his right knee extended and foot in the equinus position. The child had been investigated by numerous laboratory investigations and imaging procedures during the initial 9 months, but no organic cause was found. Without any conclusive diagnosis, the child was being managed by physical therapy. During examination in our clinic, the variable contraction of the quadriceps muscle raised the possibility of a psychiatric disorder. A psychiatrist's opinion was sought and the child was found to have dissociative motor disord

Recent trends in assistive technology for mobility.

Loss of physical mobility makes maximal participation in desired activities more difficult and in the worst case fully prevents participation. This paper surveys recent work in assistive technology to improve mobility for persons with a disability, drawing on examples observed during a tour of academic and industrial research sites in Europe. The underlying theme of this recent work is a more seamless integration of the capabilities of the user and the assistive technology. This improved integration spans diverse technologies, including powered wheelchairs, prosthetic limbs, functional electri

Tests of static balance do not predict mobility performance following traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: To investigate the extent to which different single-limb support (SLS) parameters predict mobility performance following traumatic brain injury (TBI). METHODS: Seventy-one people with mobility limitations following TBI were assessed for balance and mobility performance in a human movement laboratory. Participants performed a clinical test of static balance that involved balancing in SLS on each leg with eyes open and eyes closed. Mobility performance was measured by self-selected gait speed and performance on the High Level Mobility Scale (HiMAT). Dynamic stability during walking was…

Disability Among Persons With Chronic Severe Back Pain: Results From a Nationally Representative Population-based Sample.

We evaluated the association between the chronic severe back pain with disability and participation, in U.S. Adults using data from the US 2019 National Health Interview Survey. In our sample of 2,925 adults (weighted n: 20,468,134) who reported having chronic severe back pain, 60% reported mobility disability, 60% had work limitations, 34% were limited for social participation and 16% had self-care limitations. Older age (65+) was associated with mobility difficulties (OR 1.99, 95% CI 1.28,6.09) and work limitation (OR 2.21, 95% CI 1.61,3.05). Lower socioeconomic status was associated with in

The Use of Self-Reported Functional Limitation to Examine Pregnancy and Reproductive Health Experiences in a National Sample of Women.

CONTEXT: A lack of consensus in the literature examining reproductive health experiences of women with disability prevails, in part, due to various operational definitions of disability. METHODS: Results from the 2015-2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) were utilized to assess reproductive health, disability, and demographic variables among women aged 20-44. Disability was assessed using the six functional limitation subgroups. Analyses included modified Poisson regression and negative binomial regression. RESULTS: One hundred eighty-two (14%) women reported having

Results of dynamic treatment of fractures of the proximal phalanx of the hand.

BACKGROUND: The treatment of fractures of the proximal phalanx in three-phalanx fingers has for a long time been the domain of conservative static treatment in a plaster cast. After removal of the plaster, there was usually limitation of mobility of the interphalangeal joints. Fractures of the proximal phalanx are managed with conservative functional treatment in our clinic. The aim of this method is to achieve bony healing and free mobility at the same time and not in succession. We evaluated our treatment outcomes in a follow-up study. METHODS: The dressing consists of a dorsopalmar plaster
