[Entering Clinical Practice: Gender-Related Challenges and Coping Strategies Among Male Nursing Students].

In Taiwan, the number of male nursing professionals has increased steadily over the years, with the continued preparation of male entrants through the nursing education system serving as an important foundation for this growth. Accordingly, the professional development and clinical learning experiences of male nursing students warrant attention from both nursing education and clinical practice. Nursing has long been regarded as a predominantly female profession. During their education, male nursing students may encounter a lack of male role models, traditional gender-role expectations, and rej

Sleep problems in the community elderly as predictors of death and nursing home placement.

In 1984-85, 1855 elderly residents of an urban community responded to a comprehensive baseline interview that included questions regarding an extensive set of sleep characteristics and problems. During the subsequent 3 1/2 years of follow-up, 16.7% of the respondents died and 3.5% were placed in nursing homes. The predictive significance of each sleep characteristic for mortality and for nursing home placement was determined separately for males and females, using Cox proportional hazards models. Selected demographic and psychosocial variables were also entered into the models. Age, problems w

How we live: participatory research with six people with learning difficulties.

Drawing from the Social Model of disability, six people with learning difficulties participated over 18 months in researching their own lived experiences. The method involved weekly group discussions supplemented by participant observation. The study's value stems from in-depth inquiry, which included the participants in the data collection, analysis, dissemination and consequences that they found meaningful. The participants lived in nurse managed community homes. They described how they had faced social and economic exclusion, for example, concerning marriage, child rearing and decently paid

Improving rural and regional access to long-acting reversible contraception and medical abortion through nurse-led models of care, task-sharing and telehealth (ORIENT): a protocol for a stepped-wedge pragmatic cluster-randomised controlled trial in Australian general practice.

INTRODUCTION: Women living in rural and regional Australia often experience difficulties in accessing long-acting reversible contraception (LARC) and medical abortion services. Nurse-led models of care can improve access to these services but have not been evaluated in Australian general practice. The primary aim of the ORIENT trial (ImprOving Rural and regIonal accEss to long acting reversible contraceptioN and medical abortion through nurse-led models of care, Tasksharing and telehealth) is to assess the effectiveness of a nurse-led model of care in general practice at increasing uptake of L

Demystifying Quality Metrics and Unveiling the True Measure of Quality of Care in Nursing Homes: Mixed Effects Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The 5-Star Quality Rating System for nursing homes plays a central role in evaluating quality of care, although it has both strengths and limitations. This system relies heavily on the Minimum Data Set and derives several quality measures (QMs) from it. In this study, we validated the effectiveness of the 5-Star Quality Rating System for nursing homes and its underlying QMs in estimating quality of care. We constructed a panel dataset of US nursing homes (n=15,416) active from May 2020 to June 2023, retrieving data from three major sources: (1) COVID-19 nursing home data, (2) Payro

Nursing home case mix in Wisconsin. Findings and policy implications.

Along with many other states, Wisconsin is considering a case mix approach to Medicaid nursing home reimbursement. To support this effort, a nursing home case mix model was developed from a representative sample of 410 Medicaid nursing home residents from 56 facilities in Wisconsin. The model classified residents into mutually exclusive groups that were homogeneous in their use of direct care resources, i.e., minutes of direct care time (weighted for nurse skill level) over a 7-day period. Groups were defined initially by intense, Special, or Routine nursing requirements. Within these nursing

Recalibrating Nursing Education: A Call to Action for Moving from Pedagogy to Andragogy.

AIM: The time has come for nursing education to fully abandon historic pedagogical models and embrace andragogical principles that honor the adult learner's capacity for self-direction and ownership of their professional development. BACKGROUND: Evidence demonstrates that andragogical approaches that emphasize self-direction, experiential learning, and problem-centered education better serve adult learners. Yet formal deep embrace remains uneven across nursing programs globally. METHOD: This analysis examines evidence distinguishing pedagogical from andragogical approaches in nursing educati

A classical view of the theory-practice gap in nursing.

The perceived problem of the theory-practice gap is built upon the assumption that theory can and must be directly applied to nursing practice, otherwise it is irrelevant. Whilst the spirit in which this claim is made is healthy, the assumption is false. An examination of the Greek origins of theory and practice show that the ancient Greeks had different terms for the different types of knowledge contained within theory and within practice. The type of knowledge associated with practice could not be taught through theory, nor well represented in theoretical terms. The knowledge of the bicycle

Implementing a nurse-enabled, integrated, shared-care model involving specialists and general practitioners in early breast cancer post-treatment follow-up (EMINENT): a single-centre, open-label, phase 2, parallel-group, pilot, randomised, controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Current models of post-treatment cancer care rely heavily on hospital-based, medical specialists and do not sufficiently leverage primary care. Many breast cancer survivors face ongoing unmet needs that may benefit from a multidisciplinary, shared-care approach. We aimed to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effectiveness of implementing nurse-enabled, shared-follow-up care between the acute and primary care setting for early-stage breast cancer. METHODS: In this single-centre, open-label, phase II, pilot, randomised, controlled trial, individuals diagnosed with breast cance

The emergence of custodial health nursing as a specialty whose time has come: An Australian experience.

BACKGROUND: Nurses provide healthcare in prisons worldwide. Working within security restraints, in environments not designed for nursing care, custodial health nurses (CHNs) use specialist nursing skills and knowledge to do essential work. Rapid increases in prisoner age, infirmity and ill-health of prisoners mandate their access to these nurses. AIM: To raise awareness of the CHNs struggle for specialty status within the nursing profession, public health frameworks and prisons. SOURCES OF EVIDENCE: Publicly available information is organised and analysed through the author's lens of 20 year

The Influence of Work Values on Nursing Career Intentions: A Study of Multiple Mediating Factors.

In light of the global shortage in the nursing workforce, understanding the factors associated with career intention among nursing students and registered nurses has become increasingly important for nursing education and workforce retention strategies. Grounded in the theory of planned behavior (TPB), this study developed an extended TPB model incorporating work values and supplementary workplace psychological variables to examine the psychological mechanisms associated with nursing career intention across different professional stages. A cross-sectional survey design was employed, in which n

Achieving age-friendly cancer care through the NICHE practice model.

More than 50% of cancers occur in adults aged 70 years and older, and this population accounts for 60% of all cancer deaths. Cancer care for older adults is complex and influenced by comorbidities, age-related physiologic changes, social needs, and cognitive or functional limitations. This NICHE column addresses the alignment of the NICHE practice model and resources to advance evidence-based care of older adults with cancer in conjunction with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Age-Friendly 4Ms framework and international professional oncology nursing practice standards.
