Criminal Legal Involvement Among U.S. Adults With Serious Psychological Distress and Differences by Race-Ethnicity.

OBJECTIVE: The authors examined associations between criminal legal involvement (CLI) and serious psychological distress and how these associations differed by racial-ethnic group. METHODS: The authors conducted a retrospective analysis of multiple cross-sections of data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (2015-2019) and used multivariable linear probability regression models to assess lifetime CLI and past-year probation, parole, supervised release, or other conditional release in a nationally representative sample of noninstitutionalized U.S. adults, ages ≥18 years (N=214,505),

A longitudinal analysis of peer-delivered permanent supportive housing: Impact of housing on mental and overall health in an ethnically diverse population.

Permanent supportive housing (PSH) is an evidence-based health intervention for persons experiencing homelessness, but the impact of individual mechanisms within this intervention on health requires further research. This study examines the longitudinal impact of the mechanism of supportive housing within a peer-delivered PSH model on overall health and mental health (as measured by psychological distress and self-report of bothersome symptoms) outcomes in an ethnically diverse population. The 237 participants in the study included persons who were homeless or at risk of homelessness and who a

Experimentally testing Taylor's stress, coping and adaptation framework.

Taylor (1995) constructed a comprehensive framework of stress and adaptation, which considers internal and external resources/impediments as moderators, based on previous studies and models. However, most past research used correlation designs and has not taken into account all of the framework's components within one study. This study tested the effects of the event (minor, major), primary appraisal (benign, severe), coping (problem-focused coping (PFC) versus emotion-focused coping), external resources (with/without social support), and internal impediments (hostility), on estimated distress

Development of Machine Learning Algorithms Predicting Psychological Distress After Total Joint Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress is associated with suboptimal outcomes after total joint arthroplasty (TJA). This study aimed to develop and evaluate machine learning models to predict a high psychological distress phenotype using only preoperative data. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective secondary analysis of patients undergoing primary hip or knee arthroplasty at Duke University between 2018 and 2024. Phenotypes were derived using latent class analysis of the Optimal Screening for Prediction of Referral and Outcome-Yellow Flag tool. There were four models such as (1) elastic net, (2)

Identifying Core and Bridge Nodes of Psychological Capital and Social-Emotional Competence Among Medical Students: A Network Analysis Study.

PURPOSE: Most existing studies adopt traditional regression models to examine either psychological capital or social‑emotional competence in isolation. Few integrate these two sets of multi‑dimensional positive psychological resources within a unified network framework, hindering the exploration of their complex patterns of covariation. This study therefore aimed to identify core and bridge nodes of psychological capital and social‑emotional competence among medical students using network analysis, so as to provide potential targets for positive‑psychological interventions. METHODS: A cross-s

How social reinforcement learning can lead to metastable polarisation and the voter model.

Previous explanations for the persistence of polarization of opinions have typically included modelling assumptions that predispose the possibility of polarization (i.e., assumptions allowing a pair of agents to drift apart in their opinion such as repulsive interactions or bounded confidence). An exception is a recent simulation study showing that polarization is persistent when agents form their opinions using social reinforcement learning. Our goal is to highlight the usefulness of reinforcement learning in the context of modeling opinion dynamics, but that caution is required when selectin

Multimorbidity, health service use, and health insurance by socioeconomic groups in 31 countries: A multi-cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of physical, psychological, and cognitive multimorbidity is characterised by marked socioeconomic status (SES) inequalities. However, the relationships between multimorbidity patterns-particularly those involving cognitive conditions-and healthcare utilisation, as well as the role of health insurance, remain poorly understood. This study aims to explore healthcare-seeking behaviour among individuals with multimorbidity and assess whether these associations vary by SES and health insurance coverage. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This multicohort study analysed harmonised dat

The impact of treatment processes on depression and anxiety outcomes in behavioral health treatment: a retrospective analysis.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depression are prevalent mental health disorders, but traditional treatments often have limited effectiveness. Process-Based Therapy (PBT), which targets the underlying mechanisms driving these conditions, offers a promising alternative. The purpose of this retrospective study was to examine how processes of change relate to changes in anxiety and depressive symptoms in patients with elevated anxiety and/or depression symptoms who underwent PBT at Lightfully Behavioral Health, a behavioral health treatment clinic. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from ad

Fear generalization immediately after contextual fear memory consolidation in mice.

Fear generalization is a symptom of anxiety-related disorders, including acute stress disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder. Using a contextual fear conditioning paradigm, we found that mice exposed to a similar neutral context but not a different neutral context soon after training showed fear generalization immediately after contextual fear memory consolidation (i.e., 6 h after training). This fear generalization was reflected by a change not only in the total amount but also the pattern of freezing between conditioned and generalized contexts. These results provide insight into the fa

From Critical Thinking to Well-Being: The Metacognitive Pathway in a Graphical-Causal Model.

This study reanalyzes data from a previous investigation on critical thinking, metacognition, empathy, and psychological well-being by incorporating academic performance into a graphical-causal model. The aim was to compare two explanatory structures: a performance-mediated model, in which metacognition relates to psychological well-being through academic performance, and a direct metacognitive model, in which metacognition maintains a direct relation with well-being. The sample included 155 undergraduate psychology students. Critical thinking, metacognition, empathy, academic performance, and

MINERVA OPS: A computational framework for the representation and recognition of orthographic, phonological, and semantic associates.

Remembering is constructive. Thus, a complete account of memory must predict patterns in both veridical and false recognition. Ideally, that account will predict the content of what people falsely remember, not just that they falsely remember. To move towards that goal, we need theories of both representation and retrieval as well as an account that joins those two accounts into a cohesive whole. To work towards that goal, Reid and Jamieson Journal of Memory and Language, 129, 104397, (2023) previously modelled false recognition in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm by importing vectors tha

Operational and conceptual confusion in life history research necessitates the two-tiered model.

Our systematic analysis of operationalizations and conceptualizations of harshness (extrinsic mortality) and unpredictability in the (psychology) life history literature highlights that (1) employment of extremely diverse measures contributes to the confusion about the effect of harshness on life history traits and (2) few measures reflect energetic stress or ambient EM, such that Ellis et al.'s two-tiered model should motivate future research.

A context-dependent model of resilient functioning after childhood maltreatment-the case for flexible biobehavioral synchrony.

Many children who experience childhood adversity, whether in the form of threat or deprivation, develop adaptive competencies that lead to resilient functioning. Still, research has not succeeded in accurately predicting the level of resilient functioning by any kind of biomarkers, likely because it has sidelined the flexibility inherent in a construct that is situationally and developmentally variable. Whilst recent research acknowledges the importance of redefining resilience in order to reflect its dynamic nature after adversity, evidence for specific behaviors that are developmentally adap

Blinded by the load: attention, awareness and the role of perceptual load.

What is the relationship between attention and conscious awareness? Awareness sometimes appears to be restricted to the contents of focused attention, yet at other times irrelevant distractors will dominate awareness. This contradictory relationship has also been reflected in an abundance of discrepant research findings leading to an enduring controversy in cognitive psychology. Lavie's load theory of attention suggests that the puzzle can be solved by considering the role of perceptual load. Although distractors will intrude upon awareness in conditions of low load, awareness will be restrict

Psychological stress induces dysfunction in the lacrimal gland through the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis.

Chronic psychosocial stress is increasingly recognized as a key risk factor for dry eye disease, potentially because of its disruption of the circadian transcriptome and lacrimal gland function, which impacts eye health. In this study, we test this hypothesis by using two mouse models (high platform and restraint experiments) of psychological stress and report that both models uniquely alter the circadian transcriptome and signaling pathways of the lacrimal gland. Psychosocial stress significantly affects the normal rhythmic oscillations of extraorbital lacrimal gland (ELG) immune cell traffic

Modelling social fear in mice: advancements in social fear conditioning and social defeat paradigms.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common and chronic mental illness whose pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, and treatment responses are often suboptimal. Animal models play a crucial role in elucidating its neurobiological mechanisms and developing novel therapeutic approaches. This article systematically reviews two primary mouse modelling paradigms: social fear conditioning (SFC) and social defeat. The SFC model induces specific social fear behaviors by pairing a social stimulus with an aversive event, whereas the social defeat model, by simulating social conflict and psychological

Multilevel structural equation models for assessing moderation within and across levels of analysis.

Social scientists are increasingly interested in multilevel hypotheses, data, and statistical models as well as moderation or interactions among predictors. The result is a focus on hypotheses and tests of multilevel moderation within and across levels of analysis. Unfortunately, existing approaches to multilevel moderation have a variety of shortcomings, including conflated effects across levels of analysis and bias due to using observed cluster averages instead of latent variables (i.e., "random intercepts") to represent higher-level constructs. To overcome these problems and elucidate the n
