"Yeah, it's biased, but … ": Recognition versus moral condemnation of bias across party lines.

Amid rising political polarization, derogatory rhetoric targeting social groups has become common and highly contested across party lines. These partisan divides are often attributed to disagreement about whether bias has occurred, and theories of social norms, harm-based moral judgment, and cognitive consistency suggest that recognizing bias should track moral condemnation. Yet other theories suggest that recognition and condemnation are psychologically distinct. We propose that, even when partisans similarly recognize explicit bias ("yeah, it's biased"), they may diverge in moral response ("

Automatic detection of moral information: evidence from visual mismatch response (vMMR).

BACKGROUND: A theoretical debate persists regarding whether moral judgment is primarily driven by moral intuition or moral reasoning. Furthermore, it remains unclear whether moral information is processed automatically, despite the social intuitionist model's assertion that moral judgments arise from rapid, intuitive processes. METHOD: To investigate the automaticity of moral judgment, the present study employed the visual mismatch response (vMMR) as an electrophysiological marker. The vMMR is an event-related potential component that indexes the brain's automatic detection of environmental c

Moral Injury in the DSM-5-TR: Syndrome Spectrum vs. Categorical Disorder.

Noteworthy advancements with respect to moral injury (MI) have occurred during the past five years. MI has now been sufficiently recognized and officially noted within the DSM-5-TR Updates under 'Religious, Spiritual and Moral Problem' Z code ("Section of Other Conditions that May Be a Focus of Clinical Attention"). Here we summarize the changes in the DSM related to MI and discuss the possibility of its future inclusion in other diagnostic nomenclature (e.g., WHO-ICD). With regard to classifying MI as a distinct diagnostic entity, criteria for MI as a disorder are reviewed based on scales ass

Layered moral distress in end-of-life nursing under occupation: A hermeneutic inquiry.

BackgroundNurses providing end-of-life care in conflict-affected settings navigate cultural traditions, professional duties, and structural violence. Existing frameworks address cultural and institutional dimensions separately but do not account for their simultaneous interaction under protracted conflict.AimThis study explored how nurses' beliefs, intersecting with structural conditions, shape end-of-life care in a conflict-affected setting.Research designA Gadamerian hermeneutic inquiry employed semi-structured interviews with dialogical openness. Data were analyzed using hermeneutic princip

Network analysis of emotion regulation and moral injury symptoms among medical staff.

Current research indicates that medical staff frequently experience potentially morally injurious events, leading to moral injury (MI), which is associated with adverse physical and mental health as well as occupational burnout. Using the conceptual model of MI, this study investigated the symptom-level connections between distinct emotion regulation (ER) strategies—cognitive reappraisal (CR) and expressive suppression (ES)—and MI symptoms among medical staff. Using network analysis, we assessed ER capacities and MI symptoms in a sample of 1,001 medical staff. An ER-MI network was constructed

The impact of potentially morally injurious events on the effectiveness of evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD.

OBJECTIVE: Morally injurious events are a more recent area of interest in the field of trauma psychology. Some suggest that current, evidence-based psychotherapies for posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) do not adequately address PTSD symptoms stemming from events perceived as morally injurious; however, this has not been clearly demonstrated in the literature. The goal of this study was to add to emerging evidence and explore whether current evidence-based psychotherapies for PTSD can adequately address PTSD symptoms resulting from both (PMIE) potentially morally injurious and (non-PMIE) non

Constructing knowledge and moral skills through hospital clown interventions: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Hospital clown practice is grounded in a form of situated wisdom that extends beyond entertainment. Through their interventions, hospital clowns develop and enact moral know-how that enables them to interpret clinical environments, respond to uncertainty, and make respectful decisions in real time. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study explores the moral know-how and skills developed and enacted by hospital clowns during clinical encounters and examines how these extend beyond technical and communicative performance. METHODS: A qualitative study inform by a phenomenological perspecti

The challenged conscience: Moral predicaments of hospital frontline administrators in China's medical disputes.

Although medical disputes have become a pervasive challenge in global healthcare systems, the role of hospital organizations in this process has received limited scholarly attention. In the Chinese context, existing research on medical disputes often treats hospitals as the background or monolithic actors, neglecting internal organizational dynamics. This article addresses this gap by examining hospital frontline administrators (HFAs), a pivotal group in resolving medical disputes. Drawing on the theory of street-level bureaucracy and ethnographic fieldwork, the study demonstrates how structur

Sliding doors at the bedside: conditional outcomes and moral judgments in end-of-life care.

BACKGROUND: Intensive care medicine has increasingly embraced shared decision-making and advance care planning as core components of good clinical practice. Nonetheless, clinical reasoning is sometimes implicitly framed as a linear, biologically driven process. In contexts of prognostic uncertainty, this framing risks obscuring a structural feature of decision-making: the constitutive role of value-based judgments in shaping prognosis and outcomes. MAIN BODY: This paper introduces the concept of conditional outcomes to clarify a structural feature of certain clinical situations, in which survi

The Process Is Not the Point: Moral Uncertainty and Substantive Justice in Health Care Priority Setting.

Health actors must ration care due to resource constraints. But even when decision makers know the relevant empirical facts about an allocation decision-including how many patients will benefit from a service, which patients will benefit, how much each patient will benefit, and so on-these facts may not provide a clear answer about how to make allocation decisions. This is because competing moral principles recommend different courses of action: for instance, maximizing health benefits may involve deprioritizing more disadvantaged groups. Facing this moral uncertainty, many ethicists and polic

Witnessing evil: Moral injury and the struggle with revenge among Israeli reserve soldiers.

This study explores the experiences of 20 Israeli reserve soldiers who were assigned to manage the bodies of the victims following Hamas's October 7, 2023, attacks. Although not present during the atrocities, these soldiers became witnesses to their aftermath-encountering mutilated corpses, destroyed homes, and traces of deliberate cruelty. Their testimonies reveal an acute confrontation with human evil. Thematic analysis highlights four interrelated themes: the tension between the urge to know and the need to protect the soul, the recognition of unfathomable cruelty as "pure evil," the destab

Beyond burnout: professional grief and moral distress in pediatric neuro-oncological neurosurgery.

OBJECTIVE: Pediatric neuro-oncology exposes healthcare professionals to high technical complexity, ethical uncertainty, and sustained emotional stress. Professional grief, moral distress, and second victim experiences are increasingly recognized in pediatric oncology, yet they remain insufficiently characterized in pediatric neuro-oncological neurosurgery. METHODS: The authors conducted a cross-sectional, anonymous survey among healthcare professionals involved in pediatric neuro-oncology at a tertiary children's hospital. A 27-item questionnaire assessed 5 domains: professional grief, moral

The ethics and moral psychology of HPV vaccination: Evidence from a cross-cultural study.

Vaccine hesitancy is a major threat to public health worldwide. Debates about vaccines are often moralized; however, how ethics and ethical judgments relate to vaccination intention remains underexplored. Here, we identify ethically relevant concerns from the academic literature that we operationalize for a pre-registered survey to study how ethical judgments relate to parents' intentions to vaccinate their children against HPV. We also investigate potential sociocultural influences on ethical judgments: we compare parents from the US, the UK, and Germany. We find that parents' ethical judgmen

Providing medically assisted dying in Canada: a qualitative study of emotional and moral impact.

PURPOSE: Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) in Canada places the medical provider at the centre of the process. The MAiD provider holds primary responsibility for determining eligibility and becomes acquainted with patients' inner desires and expressions of suffering. This is followed by the MAiD procedure of administering the lethal agent and being present at the death of eligible patients. We report participants' perceptions of the emotional and moral impacts of this role. METHODOLOGY: Two years after MAiD was legalised in Canada, 22 early-adopting physician providers were interviewed. 'It's not just immoral!': The role of moral disengagement and incivility in dehumanising the transgressor of immoral behaviour.

People who engage in immoral behaviour are often dehumanised. However, they also tend to justify their actions to convince themselves or others that their misconduct is morally acceptable. In this paper, we examine whether moral disengagement mechanisms influence the extent to which a transgressor is perceived as fully human. Further, we assess whether this perception varies based on specific characteristics of the immoral behaviour, such as incivility. To answer these research questions, we conducted two studies with online participants from Spain. In Study 1, participants (N = 302) evaluated
