Morphogenesis of the retinal pigment epithelium: toward understanding retinal degenerative diseases.

The phenotype of an epithelial cell is defined by a unique combination of morphology, gene and protein expression, and protein localization. Results indicate that the terminal differentiation of the RPE cell can be described in part by changes in the polarity of its surface proteins alpha v beta 5 integrin, Na,K-ATPase, N-CAM, and EMMPRIN. Changes in protein/gene expression and protein localization in late stages of RPE development identify alpha v beta 5 integrin as a key player in RPE phagocytosis, and N-CAM and EMMPRIN as potentially important molecules in other RPE functions necessary for

Double outlet right ventricle: experimental morphogenesis in the chick embryo heart.

Double outlet right ventricle (DORV) was produced experimentally in the chick embryo by preventing the incorporation of the posteromedial conus into the left ventricle. This was accomplished by placing a ligature around the caudal end of the conus at a stage in which it is exclusively continuous with the right ventricle. The embryos were divided into two groups according to the stage of development of the conal ridge. In one group, the conal ridges had not appeared (stages 17-18); in the other they had begun to develop (stage 22). Both groups were divided into two subgroups; in one the ligatur

Squamous epithelial morphogenesis and mechanobiology across the lifetime of dynamic barrier tissues.

Barrier epithelia perform crucial protective and regulatory roles, with their development occurring in careful coordination with the tissues that they enclose. Many barrier epithelia are transient tissues with precise mechanisms of morphogenesis on spatial scales spanning over an order of magnitude, encompassing both early transitions to a squamous shape and wholesale remodeling at the end of the tissue's lifetime. Here, we compare exemplar tissues from Drosophila, Tribolium, and other insects: the extraembryonic, larval epidermal, peripodial, and follicular epithelia. We consider the extent t…

Morphogenesis and topological evolution of a frustrated nematic liquid crystal under confinement.

Liquid crystals (LC) represent topological soft matter that spontaneously form assemblies of constituents and mesoscale textures to minimize free energy. Depending on boundary conditions, they exhibit transformable topological defects, whose study provides fundamental insights applicable to a wide array of disciplines. However, their three-dimensional (3D) structures and dynamics remain largely unexplored due to the subdiffraction limit length scales and submillisecond time scales characteristic of conventional molecular LCs. Here, we report a morphogenesis from conventional nematic tactoids t…

The role of SlGH9-16 cellulase in gynoecium morphogenesis and fruit texture in tomato.

Flower development involves dynamic cell wall changes driven by coordinated synthesis, breakdown, and remodeling processes that support cell … (OE) lines for SlGH9-16 and showed that this enzyme is necessary for normal cellular patterning and morphogenesis of the tomato gynoecium. Furthermore, SlGH9-16 serves as a dose-dependent modifier influencing both fruit architecture and texture, with its loss-of-function significantly extending post-harvest shelf life. FT-IR and HPTLC analyses suggest that thes …

Glycolytic suppression of cell adhesion promotes thyroid morphogenesis in response to nutrition.

Organ morphogenesis relies on collective cellular behaviors. While intrinsic developmental programs governing cellular behaviors are well characterized, the effects of environmental and systemic factors on these behaviors remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate how nutritional availability modulates cellular behaviors during thyroid morphogenesis using Xenopus tadpoles as an in vivo model. RNA-seq analysis of thyroid regions from fed and unfed tadpoles shows that nutritional status alters gene expression profiles. We identify cell adhesion-related genes as key targets, with expression i…

Role of the rs6184 growth hormone receptor gene polymorphism in mandibular morphogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphisms in the growth hormone receptor (GHR) gene influence the craniofacial system by affecting the growth of the mandibular body length and ramal height, with significant variations observed across different ethnic populations. This study investigated the relationship between a single nucleotide polymorphism (rs6184) in the GHR gene and its effects on mandibular morphogenesis in a Dravidian population. METHODS: A total of 250 subjects were divided into three groups. Group 1 included 100 subjects with skeletal Class I malocclusion and average ramal height (control group). G…

The Morphogenesis, Pathogenesis, and Molecular Regulation of Human Tooth Development-A Histological Review.

Odontogenesis, the development of teeth, is a complex, multistage process that unfolds from early embryogenesis through tooth eruption and maturation. It serves as a classical model of organogenesis due to the intricate reciprocal interactions between cranial neural crest-derived mesenchyme and oral epithelium. This narrative review synthesizes current scientific knowledge on human tooth development, tracing the journey from the embryological origins in the first branchial arch to the formation of a fully functional tooth and its supporting structures. Key morphogenetic stages-bud, cap, bell,

AGPAT2 acts at the crossroads of lipid biosynthesis and DRP1-mediated ER morphogenesis.

The morphology of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), characterized by central sheets and peripheral tubules, is controlled by membrane-shaping proteins. However, the role of lipids in ER morphogenesis remains elusive, despite the ER being the major site for lipid synthesis. Here, by examining the role of eighteen phosphatidic acid (PA)-generating enzymes in ER morphology, we identify lysophosphatidic acid acyltransferase 2 (AGPAT2) as a critical factor in mouse and human cells. AGPAT2 produces PA in the glycerophospholipid/triacylglycerol biosynthesis pathway, and its mutations cause congenital g…

The role of manganese in morphogenesis and pathogenesis of the opportunistic fungal pathogen Candida albicans.

Metals such as Fe, Cu, Zn, and Mn are essential trace nutrients for all kingdoms of life, including microbial pathogens and their hosts. During infection, the mammalian host attempts to starve invading microbes of these micronutrients through responses collectively known as nutritional immunity. Nutritional immunity for Zn, Fe and Cu has been well documented for fungal infections; however Mn handling at the host-fungal pathogen interface remains largely unexplored. This work establishes the foundation of fungal resistance against Mn associated nutritional immunity through the characterization

From Endoderm to Progenitors: An Update on the Early Steps of Thyroid Morphogenesis in the Zebrafish.

The mechanisms underlying thyroid gland development have a central interest in biology and this review is aimed to provide an update on the recent advancements on the early steps of thyroid differentiation that were obtained in the zebrafish, because this teleost fish revealed to be a suitable organism to study the early developmental stages. Physiologically, the thyroid precursors fate is delineated by the appearance among the endoderm cells of the foregut of a restricted cell population expressing specific transcription factors, including pax2a, nkx2.4b, and hhex. The committed thyroid primo

An Overview on the Histogenesis and Morphogenesis of Salivary Gland Neoplasms and Evolving Diagnostic Approaches.

Salivary gland neoplasms (SGN) remain a diagnostic dilemma due to their heterogenic complex behavior. Their diverse histomorphological appearance is attributed to the underlying cellular mechanisms and differentiation into various histopathological subtypes with overlapping fea-tures. Diagnostic tools such as fine needle aspiration biopsy, computerized tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography help evaluate the structure and assess the staging of SGN. Advances in molecular pathology have uncovered genetic patterns and oncogenes by immunohistochemistry, fluorescen

Abnormality in the Morphogenesis of Tooth Development and Relationship with Orthodontic Deformities and Treatment Approaches.

In the process of odontogenesis, a disturbance in the formation of the epithelium and mesenchyme can be observed and this can be manifested by atypical forms of dental development. Such biological phenomena with altered morphology are as follows: dens invaginatus (DI), dens evaginatus (DE), talon cusps, and double teeth (DT) or connate teeth (fusion and gemination). Patients with orthodontic anomalies who also exhibit teeth with morphogenetic disorders are presented in this article. Dens evaginatus and talon cusps pose orthodontic challenges in the treatment finishing phase. These reduce the p

The interplay of atoh1 genes in the lower rhombic lip during hindbrain morphogenesis.

The Lower Rhombic Lip (LRL) is a transient neuroepithelial structure of the dorsal hindbrain, which expands from r2 to r7, and gives rise to deep nuclei of the brainstem, such as the vestibular and auditory nuclei and most posteriorly the precerebellar nuclei. Although there is information about the contribution of specific proneural-progenitor populations to specific deep nuclei, and the distinct rhombomeric contribution, little is known about how progenitor cells from the LRL behave during neurogenesis and how their transition into differentiation is regulated. In this work, we investigated

Rib Cage Morphogenesis in the Human Embryo: A Detailed Three-Dimensional Analysis.

Formation of the skeletal structure in the human embryo has important consequences in terms of support, protection, and function of organs and other systems. We aimed to describe the formation of the rib cage during the embryonic period, in order to detect prominent features and identify the possible factors affecting rib cage morphology. We employed high-resolution digitized imaging data (n = 34) obtained in human embryos with Carnegie stage (CS) between 17 and 23. The rib cage became detectable as cartilage formation at CS17, expanding outward from the dorsal side of the chest-abdominal regi
