Use of phenytoin in the prevention of motion sickness.

In a placebo-controlled double-blind crossover pilot study of acute Coriolis-induced motion sickness treatment/prevention in humans employing an anticonvulsant dose of phenytoin, a mean increase in tolerance to motion stress from 4.87 min (S.D. = 5.55) to 46.87 min (S.D. = 32.6) was obtained. This represents a greater than fourfold improvement in efficacy over any currently available single agent and is more than twice as effective as the scopolamine/dexadrine combination. There were none of the usual side effects of blurred vision, dizziness, dry mouth, or sedation.

[Animal model of motion sickness in rats].

Complex accelerative stimuli can induce pica in rats as well as the treatment with poisons, which means eating of non-nutritive substances such as kaolin, in proportion to the severity of their sickness. For the purpose of using pica as an index of motion sickness in rats, we examined what kind of rotation was effective for inducing pica in rats with or without normal bilateral labyrinth functions. Clinically potent anti-motion sickness drugs, such as scopolamine, methamphetamine, diphenhydramine, were examined in reducing rotation-induced pica in rats. Rats ate more kaolin after double rotati…

Pica as an index of motion sickness in rats.

Rats eat kaolin after treatment with poisons or rotation. Thus, eating of nonnutritive substances such as kaolin, so-called pica, is an illness-response behavior of rats analogous to vomiting in humans. For use of rotation-induced pica as a behavioral index of motion sickness in rats we examined what kind of rotation was effective for inducing pica in rats and whether the vestibular apparatus was necessary for its induction. Rats ate much kaolin after double rotation with continuously changing centrifugal and angular accelerations, but little after single rotation with no accelerative changes.…

Calcium antagonists in the prevention of motion sickness.

Flunarizine is a calcium antagonist which has proved clinically useful in controlling chronic vertigo. In a double blind crossover trial 10 subjects were used to compare the electronystagmic responses to motion in patients taking flunarizine, prochlorperazine maleate, or placebo. Flunarizine is shown to be a powerful peripherally acting labyrinthine suppressant, with application in the prevention of motion sickness. Flunarizine produces none of the central depressive side effects characteristic of antihistamines and anticholinergics, which are the conventional anti-motion sickness drugs.

Motions of Alexis St. Martin's stomach.

In addition to studies on the action of gastric juice, William Beaumont studied the motility of Alexis St. Martin's stomach. He documented the nature of fundal and antral motility and how antral contractions might convert an admixture of solid food and gastric juice into a uniform homogenous semifluid. Beaumont described forcible contractions of the antrum, closure of the pylorus during antral contraction, and the discriminatory nature of the pylorus. Beaumont may also have made the first observations of the gastric motor component of the interdigestive migrating motor complex.

Passive motion therapy for infants with arthrogryposis.

A comprehensive program for treatment of arthrogryposis multiplex congenita has been developed based on experiences with 95 infants and young children with arthrogrypotic deformities. The regimen emphasizes early passive stretching and serial splinting to improve joint motion. Ninety percent of the patients had contractures of all extremities; 40% had multiple congenital anomalies. Daily intensive passive stretching of joints and serial splinting have substantially increased patient function in this population. Surgical procedures have been used only in cases in which persistent deformities re…

Etiology and treatment of motion sickness: a review.

The role of vision in motion sickness has often been either exaggerated or ignored. After examining some early theories of motion sickness, this review discusses the sensory conflict theory and visual aspects of motion sickness. A wide range of preventative measures, both optometric and non-optometric, are presented to give the vision care specialist some practical solutions to the problem of motion distress.

Motion aftereffect transfer in the monofixation syndrome.

If one adapts to a moving repetitive stimulus of stripes that is suddenly stopped, the stripes will appear to move backward. This apparent backward motion is the motion aftereffect (MAE), and its duration is a measure of its magnitude. If one eye adapts to the moving stimulus and the other eye experiences the aftereffect to the stationary stimulus, the aftereffect has been transferred from one eye to the other and is termed the interocular transfer of the MAE. Experimental evidence indicates that the degree of MAE transfer correlates with clinical binocularity. This study compares the MAE tran…

Fiberoptic visualization of motion of the eustachian tube.

The use of fiberoptic endoscopy presents a viable method of examining the nasopharyngeal aspects of the eustachian tube. It involves a nontraumatic procedure and, if introduced transnasally, allows an extended, thorough inspection of the eustachian tube and surrounding structures. The rigis telescope (Storz) is particularly versatile with respect to the areas in the nasopharynx which can be visualized and the angles at which observations may be made. For research and training purposes, phenomena of the eustachian tube and nasopharynx in subjects who do not have openings in the face or hard pal

Motion sickness-induced pica in the rat.

Two experiments investigating the effects of motion sickness on pica (the consumption of non-nutritive substances) are reported. In the first experiment rats subject to rotational stimulation subsequently engaged in geophagia (clay consumption). In the second experiment use of a conditioned aversion paradigm confirmed that the method of rotational stimulation used in the first experiment causes motion sickness in rats. The results of these experiments indicate that simple gastrointestinal malaise in the absence of a deficiency state or acute toxemia will elicit pica. It is suggested that gastr…

The prevention of motion sickness in orbital flight.

A question has arisen whether zero gravity qualifies as just another "motion environment" in which motion sickness may be elicited, or if one or more undetermined etiological factors are present which render such terms as "motion environment" and "motion sickness" inappropriate. The question is of more than academic interest for the reason that in the forthcoming Shuttle Program we have either one problem or two: one if we are concerned solely with prevention, but two if we must tackle the problem of covert etiological factors as well. This problem points up the need to define motion sickness …
