Early interpersonal trauma reduces temporoparietal junction activity during spontaneous mentalising.

Experience of interpersonal trauma and violence alters self-other distinction and mentalising abilities (also known as theory of mind, or ToM), yet little is known about their neural correlates. This fMRI study assessed temporoparietal junction (TPJ) activation, an area strongly implicated in interpersonal processing, during spontaneous mentalising in 35 adult women with histories of childhood physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse (childhood abuse; CA) and 31 women without such experiences (unaffected comparisons; UC). Participants watched movies during which an agent formed true or false b

The impact of humorous media on attitudes toward persons with disabilities.

PURPOSE: To examine the relationship between disability-related humor and attitudes toward persons with disabilities in business students (i.e. "future employers"). METHOD: Students watched one of two films designed to reduce negative attitudes toward persons with disabilities (one humorous in tone and the other serious in tone) or no film at all, and completed a measure of attitudes toward persons with disabilities. RESULTS: Results indicated that, after controlling for previous contact with persons with disabilities, age, and gender, students who watched the humorous film reported signific

Sexually transmitted infection testing of adult film performers: is disease being missed?

BACKGROUND: Undiagnosed sexually transmitted infections (STIs) may be common in the adult film industry because performers frequently engage in unprotected oral and anal intercourse, STIs are often asymptomatic, and the industry relies on urine-based testing. METHODS: Between mid-May and mid-September 2010, a consecutive sample of adult film industry performers recruited from a clinic in Los Angeles, California, that provides medical care to performers was offered oropharyngeal, rectal, and urogenital testing for Gonorrhea, and rectal and urogenital testing for Chlamydia. RESULTS: During the

Beak gape dynamics during song in the zebra finch.

Bird song is a complex communication behavior that requires the coordination of several motor systems. Sound is produced in the syrinx and then modified by the upper vocal tract, but the specific nature and dynamics of this modification are not well understood. To determine the contribution of beak movements to sound modification, we studied the beak gape patterns in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata). Subsyringeal air sac pressure and song were recorded together with changes in beak gape, which were monitored with a magneto-sensitive transducer. Beak gape was positively correlated with funda

Motility of Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Cell of Mycoplasma pneumoniae FH gliding on a glass surface in liquid medium were examined by microscopic observation and quantitatively by microcinematography (30 frames per min). Comparisons were made only within the individual experiments. The cells moved in an irregular pattern with numerous narrow bends and circles. They never changed their leading end. The average speed (without pauses) was relatively constant between o.2 and 0.5 mum/s. The maximum speed was about 1.5 to 2.0 mum/s. The movements were interrupted by resting periods of different lengths and frequency. Temperature, viscosit

Radiofrequency cordotomy for the relief of spasticity in decerebrate cats.

The effectiveness of radiofrequency (RF) cordotomy of segmental motoneurone pools of the lumbosacral cord in reducing spasticity of decerebrate cats is evaluated. The need for a new form of therapy for clinical spasticity is based upon the limitations of contemporary methods, including surgical and pharmacological techniques. In man, spasticity of spinal origin may be treated effectively by intrathecal administration of hyperbaric phenol solutions. The advantages and disadvantages are described. Difficulty in controlling the lesion is emphasized. Tension and EMG-length curves of the spastic tr

Exploring the implementation of an educational film within antenatal care to reduce the risk of cytomegalovirus infection in pregnancy: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a leading cause of sensorineural hearing loss and neuro-disability in childhood. In the absence of a licensed vaccine, adoption of hygiene-based measures may reduce the risk of CMV infection in pregnancy, however these measures are not routinely discussed with pregnant women as part of National Health Service (NHS) antenatal care in the United Kingdom (UK). METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted, underpinned by Normalization Process Theory (NPT), to investigate how an educational intervention comprising of a short film

Home-Based, Therapist-Assisted, Therapy for Young Children With Primary Complex Motor Stereotypies.

BACKGROUND: Complex motor stereotypies (CMS) typically begin before age three years and include rhythmic, repetitive, fixed movements that last for seconds to minutes and can be interrupted with distraction. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the effectiveness of a home-based, parent-provided therapy accompanied by scheduled telephone calls with a therapist, in five- to seven-year old children with primary CMS. METHODS: Eligible families received an instructional digital versatile disk (DVD) written instructions, and scheduled telephone contacts with a therapist at baseline (DVD receipt), one, three, a

Gait analysis in patients operated on for sacrococcygeal teratoma.

BACKGROUND: Long-term follow-up of sacrococcygeal teratoma (SCT) is well established; however, little is known about the effects of extensive surgery in the pelvic and perineal region, which involves disruption of muscles providing maximal support in normal walking. METHODS: Thirteen patients operated on at birth for SCT with extensive muscle dissection underwent gait studies with a Vicon 3-D motion analysis system with 6 cameras. Results were compared with 15 age-matched controls. Statistical analysis was performed with Mann-Whitney test; correlations were sought with Spearman's correlation

Electromyographic and cinematographic analysis of elbow function in tennis players with lateral epicondylitis.

Lateral epicondylitis occurs frequently in tennis players and appears to be caused by tears in the extensor aponeurosis. The purpose of this study was to compare the electromyographic activities of 5 muscles in players with lateral epicondylitis with those of injury-free players during the single-handed backhand tennis stroke. Finewire electrodes were placed into the extensor digitorum communis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, pronator teres, and flexor carpi radialis muscles in competitive tennis players; 8 players had lateral epicondylitis and 14 had normal upper extremities. The

Motion-induced positional biases in the flash-lag configuration.

When both stationary and moving objects are present in the visual field, localizing objects in space may become difficult, as shown by illusory phenomena such as the Fröhlich effect and the flash-lag effect. Despite the efforts to decipher how motion and position information are combined to form a coherent visual representation, a unitary picture is still lacking. In the flash-lag effect, a flash presented in alignment with a moving stimulus is perceived to lag behind it. We investigated whether this relative spatial localization (i.e., judging the position of the flash relative to that of the

Osteochondral lesions in the radiocapitellar joint in the skeletally immature: radiographic, MRI, and arthroscopic findings in 13 consecutive cases.

Radiography, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and arthroscopy were performed in 13 consecutive cases of osteochondral lesions of the radiocapitellar joint in 12 patients aged 11-16 years. Nine patients had a high activity level, and two patients had a significant trauma before the onset of symptoms. Symptoms were limited range of motion, pain, and catchings or lockings. Clinical findings were decreased range of motion and lateral elbow tenderness. Radiography revealed loose body, flattening of the humeral capitellum, or subchondral cysts (or a combination of these) in all cases but three. The

Recent developments of cardiac digital radiography.

Digitization in cardiovascular radiology is on the verge of its realization. Since its introduction digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is gradually replacing conventional angiography in several areas of the body. The initial tendency to avoid the arterial catheterization by intravenous injection is somewhat reversed in favor of smaller intraarterial amounts of contrast medium injected through smaller catheters at reduced rates. However, left ventriculography by intravenous route has gained widespread acceptance at rest and with exercise: motion artifacts are less crucial for ventriculograph

Generalizable neural models of emotional engagement and disengagement.

Emotional experiences are never static but continuously evolve in response to internal and external contexts. Little is known about how neural patterns change as a function of these experiences, particularly in response to complex, real-world stimuli. This study aimed to identify generalizable neural patterns as individuals collectively engage and disengage from emotions dynamically. To do so, we analyzed functional magnetic resonance imaging along with subjective emotional annotations from two independent studies as individuals watched negative and neutral movie clips. We used predictive mode

Understanding tuberculosis among people with tuberculosis through an educational film: a qualitative study.

INTRODUCTION: Treatment of the two billion people with tuberculosis (TB) infection worldwide is crucial to prevent progression to TB disease and thereby prevent further transmission. However, TB is associated with fear and stigma, and knowledge gaps about TB disease are widespread, complicating adherence to treatment. As increasing knowledge about TB can reduce stigma and increase adherence to treatment, we developed an educational film about TB infection and disease. After showing the film to people with TB, our qualitative study aimed to evaluate the film and to explore perceptions, fears an

Changing knowledge, attitudes and behaviours towards cytomegalovirus in pregnancy through film-based antenatal education: a feasibility randomised controlled trial of a digital educational intervention.

BACKGROUND: Congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection globally, however information about CMV is not routinely included in antenatal education in the United Kingdom. This feasibility study aimed to gather the essential data needed to design and power a large randomised controlled trial (RCT) to investigate the efficacy of a digital intervention in reducing the risk of CMV acquisition in pregnancy. In order to do this, we carried out a single-centre RCT, which explored the knowledge, attitudes and risk reduction behaviours in women in the intervention and treatmen
