Locomotion and motion sickness during horizontally and vertically reversed vision.

Locomotion and motion sickness during reversed vision were studied in ten normal subjects and a patient with bilateral labyrinthine loss. Whereas horizontal reversal produced moderate to severe gait disturbances as well as motion sickness in all normal subjects, vertical reversal failed to induce such symptoms. The patient, being free of motion sickness during both reversals, could not walk straight during horizontal reversal. The difference in the strength of sensory mismatch between both directions seemed to result from a difference in the role of vision for spatial orientation which is prod…

Motion sickness severity under interaction of vection and head movements.

Vection alone, or combined with head movements, has been shown to invoke motion sickness (MS). This study's purpose was to observe how different combinations of vection and head movements influenced the severity of MS. We tested 26 subjects in a rotating sphere at a speed of 45 degrees/s, resulting in vertical yaw, horizontal roll or pitch vection. Coincidently, subjects pitched, rolled, or yawed their heads (0.5 Hz, 20 degrees). We found that yaw vection combined with pitch or roll head movements significantly increased MS, while pitch vection with any type of head movement, or head and scene…

New pharmacologic approaches to the prevention of space/motion sickness.

Fundamental approaches in selection of new agents for evaluation in prevention of space/motion sickness (SMS) are reviewed. The discussion centers on drugs under investigation at the Johnson Space Center. Methodology that employs the rotating chair for measuring SMS symptomatology and susceptibility is described. The most obvious approach to the development of new agents relies on selection of agents from drug classes that possess pharmacologic properties of established anti-motion sickness agents. A second approach selects drugs that are used to prevent emesis caused by means other than expos…

Suncus murinus as a new experimental model for motion sickness.

Characteristics of motion sickness and effects of possible prophylactic drugs were studied using Suncus murinus (house musk shrew) for its potential use as an experimental model in motion sickness. Mild reciprocal shaking (amplitude: 10-40 mm; frequency: 0.5-3.0 Hz) induced vomiting in most of Suncus murinus within 2 min. Adaptation was observed when the motion stimulus was repeated with an interval of 2 to 3 days. During the repetitive motion training, both the ratio of sensitive animals and the number of vomiting episodes decreased, and the time from the start of shaking to the first vomitin…

Space motion sickness during 24 flights of the space shuttle.

The incidence and severity of Space Motion Sickness (SMS) were determined from 24 flights of the Space Shuttle. A standardized questionnaire developed at the NASA-Johnson Space Center (JSC) was administered to all crewmembers postflight during an oral debriefing with the examining flight surgeon. Cases of SMS were graded mild, moderate or severe using criteria developed at the JSC. The incidence of SMS during a first Shuttle flight for 85 crewmembers was 67% (57 cases). There were 26 mild cases (30%), 20 moderate (24%), and 11 severe (13%). Differences were found between males and females, cre…

Motion sickness reflex arc bypasses the area postrema in cats.

Motion-induced vomiting was studied in cats exposed to vertical sinusoidal oscillation on a spring-suspended platform. Two groups of five cats each, namely, motion-untested and motion sickness-susceptible, were subjected to chronic ablation of the area postrema. Motion sickness occurred postoperatively in all the previously untested cats, and in four of the five previously susceptible cats. Statistical comparison with normal cats indicated that the operated cats were significantly more susceptible to motion sickness. The manifest loss of susceptibility in one cat with a lesion is attributed to…

A misconception of motion sickness leads to false therapeutic expectations.

The emetic chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ), located in the area postrema of the medulla oblongata, is generally believed to be indispensable for the vomiting in motion sickness and, by extrapolation, also in space sickness. Accordingly, it has been postulated that a "motion vomiting substance" is secreted into the cerebrospinal fluid in the emetic process. Furthermore, certain therapeutic measures against motion sickness are aimed at preventing the presumed chemical stimulation of the CTZ. This concept originated from laboratory experiments in which ablation of the area postrema protected som…

Estimated body rotation as a predictor of motion sickness susceptibility.

We rotated 36 blindfolded subjects in yaw between 30 degrees and 135 degrees and asked them to estimate the angular displacement they had experienced. An index of a subject's "receptivity" was obtained by calculating the slope of the line relating perceived to actual displacement; his susceptibility to motion sickness was determined by a questionnaire. The product moment correlation between these two measures was not significant, a result which conflicts with the receptivity hypothesis. It is suggested that "adaptability" rather than "receptivity" may be the more impotant determinant of suscep…

Relationship Between Motion Sickness and Postural Stability: A Systematic Review.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness (MS) has traditionally been attributed to visual-sensory mismatch. Research on the cause-and-effect relationship between postural instability and MS has emerged, although evidence remains scarce. METHODS: A literature review from inception to December 31, 2024, was conducted to understand the relationship between MS and postural instability by searching several databases over a 1-month period in January 2025. The search was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The included studies investigated vario…

Motion Sickness and Psychological and Vestibular Symptom Burden After Concussion.

Given the potential interplay of psychological symptoms following pediatric concussion and vestibular dysfunction, we conducted a prospective cohort study of participants ages 8 to 19 ≤72 hours of injury from the emergency department to assess the association between motion sickness and outcomes. Participants completed visio-vestibular testing and symptom-based surveys at enrollment, with outcome assessment at 1 and 4 weeks post-injury. We enrolled 114 participants, 19 with motion sickness history, 17 with new motion sickness after injury. Although not statistically significant following Bonfe…

Influence of seating orientation on motion sickness in autonomous vehicles.

A major advantage of autonomous vehicles (AVs) is the passengers' ability to perform non-driving related tasks (NDRTs) while being driven. Among these NDRTs, social interaction with other passengers is considered to be particularly valuable. Seating layouts featuring rotatable front seats will enable a new level of social interaction during autonomous car journeys. However, being seated against the direction of travel is not very popular. Fear of motion sickness is one of the main reasons for this reluctance, which is commonly explained by the inability to see the road ahead. This raises the q…

Concussion can increase the risk of visually induced motion sickness.

Concussion can lead to various symptoms such as balance problems, memory impairments, dizziness, and/or headaches. It has been previously suggested that during self-motion relevant tasks, individuals with concussion may rely heavily on visual information to compensate for potentially less reliable vestibular inputs and/or problems with multisensory integration. As such, concussed individuals may also be more sensitive to other visually-driven sensations such as visually induced motion sickness (VIMS). To investigate whether concussed individuals are at elevated risk of experiencing VIMS, we ex…

One simple question detects motion sickness susceptibility in migraine patients.

OBJECTIVE: To find out if motion sickness susceptibility (MSS) of vestibular migraine (VM) patients and migraine only (MO) patients can be reliably detected with a single simple question: "Can you read while travelling in a car without getting motion sick?". METHOD: Ninety-two definite VM and 58 MO patients and 74 healthy control (HC) subjects were asked about their MSS and about being able to read while riding in a car without becoming motion sick. A Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire (MSSQ-Short) including childhood (MSA), adulthood (MSB) and total (MST) parts was also administere…
