Is multidetector computed tomography a suitable alternative to MR imaging for the assessment of myocardial necrosis after alcohol septal ablation?

BACKGROUND: To compare magnetic resonance (MR) imaging and multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for the assessment of myocardial infarction (MI) after alcohol septal ablation (ASA). METHODS: Ten patients (mean age, 60 years ± 16) were examined with both MDCT and 1.5-T MR imaging performed 10 minutes after injection, within 3 days after ASA. Half of them had a temporary pacemaker (PM) during MDCT examination. Global image quality (IQ) and localization of MI were noticed on both MDCT and MR images. Volumes of MI, contrast-to-noise ratios (CNR) and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) were also calc…

Anomalies of the aortic arch in dogs: evaluation with the use of multidetector computed tomography angiography and proposal of an extended classification scheme.

BACKGROUND: Congenital anomalies of the aortic arch are important as they may be associated with vascular ring anomalies. The most common vascular ring anomaly in dogs is a persistent right aortic arch. However, published data of the distribution of the different types of vascular ring anomalies and other aortic arch anomalies are lacking. The objective of this retrospective descriptive study was to evaluate both the prevalence and the different types of aortic arch anomalies that can be detected using thoracic computed tomography (CT) examination. Archived thoracic CT examinations acquired be

Peripheral arterial occlusive disease is more prevalent in patients with hemodialysis: comparison with the findings of multidetector-row computed tomography.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) influences the mortality of patients on hemodialysis therapy. Although the ankle-brachial pressure index (ABI) is used widely to detect PAOD, it yields false-negative results because of calcifications of vascular walls. To more accurately assess the prevalence of PAOD, we investigated which noninvasive method, among ABI, toe-brachial pressure index, transcutaneous Po(2), and skin perfusion pressure (SPP), had superior sensitivity and specificity to the others. METHODS: Multidetector-row computed tomography was performed in 36 hemodialys

Usefulness of early diagnosis of small bowel obstruction due to broad ligament hernia using multidetector computed tomography: a case report.

Small bowel obstruction due to broad ligament hernia (BLH) is a rare type of internal hernia. Preoperative diagnosis is difficult, as clinical symptoms and imaging results are often nonspecific. BLH has a high risk of strangulation and requires surgery for the reduction of herniated bowels. According to an analysis of 140 BLH cases reported in Japan, the typical patient is a middle-aged woman who has been pregnant and has no history of abdominal surgery and the characteristic computed tomography (CT) findings. This report will enable preoperative early diagnosis with our description of the typ

Regional calcified plaque score evaluated by multidetector computed tomography for predicting the addition of rotational atherectomy during percutaneous coronary intervention.

BACKGROUND: Rotational atherectomy (rotablation) has been proposed as a potentially superior strategy for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in complex and severely calcified lesions. OBJECTIVES: We hypothesized that a per-lesion coronary artery calcium score determined by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) would be useful for predicting the requriement for rotablation during PCI. METHODS: MDCT was performed in patients with stable angina pectoris who were scheduled for first PCI. In 116 consecutive subjects (168 target lesions) with successful PCI, MDCT and quantitative coronary…

Presence of myocardial hypoenhancement on multidetector computed tomography after primary percutaneous coronary intervention in acute myocardial infarction predicts poor prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has suggested that patients with greater delayed contrast-enhanced size by multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) are more likely to experience adverse cardiac events and have poor prognoses over the long term. The myocardial hypoenhancement area in the delayed contrast-enhanced effect suggests microvascular obstruction. The outcomes of patients with a hypoenhancement area detected by MDCT have not been clear. We examined the clinical importance of myocardial hypoenhancement detected by delayed contrast-enhanced MDCT after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) …

[Surgical treatment of unroofed coronary sinus coexisting with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation; diagnosis by multidetector computed tomography; report of a case].

We experienced a rare case of an unroofed coronary sinus without a persistent left superior vena cava. A 55-year-old man, who was diagnosed with cerebral infarction, presented with suspected atrial septal defect (ASD) coexisting with paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Before the operation, we diagnosed this case as coronary sinus ASD by contrast-enhanced coronary computed tomography (CT). There was a 20 mm segment of abnormal communication between the base of the left atrium and the roof of the coronary sinus. We repaired the defect by simple direct closure from the left atrium side, so that the

Dynamic changes in the dural sac of patients with lumbar canal stenosis evaluated by multidetector-row computed tomography after myelography.

PURPOSE: Some reported studies have evaluated the dural sac in patients with lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) by computed tomography (CT) after conventional myelography or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). But they have been only able to evaluate static factors. No reports have described detailed dynamic changes in the dural sac during flexion and extension observed by multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT). The aim of this study was to elucidate or demonstrate, in detail, the influence of dynamic factors on the severity of stenosis. METHODS: One hundred patients with LSS were enrolled in t

Usefulness of multidetector-row computed tomography in diagnosis of anomalous origin of left coronary artery arising from the pulmonary artery.

Anomalous origin of the left coronary artery arising from the pulmonary artery (ALCAPA) is a rare congenital heart defect that affects approximately 1 in 300,000 live births and accounts for 0.5% of all congenital heart disease. Without surgical intervention, most patients with this anomaly die in infancy. The diagnosis of ALCAPA syndrome is sometimes difficult, especially in children, because it often presents with atypical symptoms and signs. Echocardiography can yield some findings that are highly indicative of this syndrome. Cardiac catheterization usually establishes the diagnosis, but it
