Enhancing Virtual Rehabilitation in Upper Limbs With Biocybernetic Adaptation: The Effects of Virtual Reality on Perceived Muscle Fatigue, Game Performance and User Experience.

Virtual rehabilitation has been used during decades to provide a more personalized, controlled, and enjoyable experience on upper-limb motor rehabilitation. Since novel virtual reality (VR) technologies are now accessible and highly immersive, the challenge for a wide dissemination of virtual rehabilitation in clinical scenarios has shifted from the hardware robustness to the software intelligence. A sophisticated technique that provides physiological intelligence to novel human-computer interaction (HCI) applications is biocybernetic adaptation. The concept emerges from the electrophysiologic

Medial gastrocnemius muscles fatigue but do not atrophy in paralyzed cat hindlimb after long-term spinal cord hemisection and unilateral deafferentation.

This study of medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscle and motor units (MUs) after spinal cord hemisection and deafferentation (HSDA) in adult cats, asked 1) whether the absence of muscle atrophy and unaltered contractile speed demonstrated previously in HSDA-paralyzed peroneus longus (PerL) muscles, was apparent in the unloaded HSDA-paralyzed MG muscle, and 2) how ankle unloading impacts MG muscle and MUs after dorsal root sparing (HSDA-SP) with foot placement during standing and locomotion. Chronic isometric contractile forces and speeds were maintained for up to 12 months in all conditions, but fat

Force and fatigue in human type I muscle fibres. A surface EMG study in patients with congenital myopathy and type I fibre predominance.

An isometric ischaemic intermittent m.biceps brachii exercise test is performed by 4 patients suffering from congenital myopathies which are characterized by a 100% type I fibre predominance, and by 26 healthy volunteers. Thirty contractions per minute are made at an 80% of maximal voluntary contraction level. It is found that type I muscle fibres have a fourfold lower force-generating capacity than type II muscle fibres. The EMG amplitude shows that more EMG voltage is needed per unit force in the patients with 100% type I fibres compared with controls. Under standardized fatiguing circumstan

Yeast Protein-Derived High Fischer Ratio Peptides Exert Superior Anti-Fatigue Efficacy to Amino Acid Mixtures by Regulating Muscle-Liver Axis Lactate Metabolism.

Yeast protein-derived high Fischer ratio peptides (HFYP) show great potential for alleviating exercise-induced fatigue, yet existing studies have focused only on skeletal muscle regulation, overlooking the muscle-liver axis in systemic lactate metabolism. We optimized HFYP preparation via response surface methodology, yielding peptides with a Fischer ratio of 40.01 and 23.95% BCAA content. Low-dose HFYP (0.128 g/kg) prolonged exhaustive swimming time from 9.53 to 29.88 min (3.1-fold), outperforming taurine (16.89 min) and BCAA-matched amino acid mixtures (22.25 and 18.78 min). Mechanistically,

Hesperetin Improves Fatigue and Endurance Performance in Mice by Increasing Muscle Synthesis Via the Protein Kinase B/Mechanistic Target of Rapamycin Signaling Pathway.

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a common and complex phenomenon resulting from the disruption of 1 or more physiological processes that facilitate muscle fibers in generating force. It is a significant public health concern affecting human health globally. Research indicates that natural compounds may effectively and safely alleviate physical fatigue due to their potential health benefits and minimal side effects. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to investigate the ergogenic effect of citrus flavonoid hesperetin (HES). METHODS: This study utilized a multifaceted approach involving network

Comparative Analysis of SCM Muscle Fatigue in Office Workers with Hunched Posture: A Study on Chronic Lower Back Pain versus Non-Affected Individuals.

This study examines the disparities between people suffering from chronic lower back pain (LBP) and those who do not, with a particular focus on how extended periods of sitting with poor posture affect fatigue and discomfort in the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscles among office employees. Eighty university staff and students were enrolled in the study by matching age, BMI, and type of job. They were split into two groups later: a control group (n = 40) with no back pain and a pain group (n = 40) with a history of lower back pain (LBP). Pain intensity was measured using a Visual Analog Scale (V

Effect of muscle length on maximum evoked torque, discomfort, contraction fatigue, and strength adaptations during electrical stimulation in adult populations: A systematic review.

Neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) can improve physical function in different populations. NMES-related outcomes may be influenced by muscle length (i.e., joint angle), a modulator of the force generation capacity of muscle fibers. Nevertheless, to date, there is no comprehensive synthesis of the available scientific evidence regarding the optimal joint angle for maximizing the effectiveness of NMES. We performed a systematic review to investigate the effect of muscle length on NMES-induced torque, discomfort, contraction fatigue, and strength training adaptations in healthy and clini

Upper trapezius muscle conduction velocity during fatigue in subjects with and without work-related muscular disorders: a non-invasive high spatial resolution approach.

The development of fatigue at the muscle fibre level can be assessed in terms of a decrease in conduction velocity (CV). The present study aimed to investigate if work-related muscular disorders in occupations characterised by static loads of long duration affect fatigue resistance in the painful muscle. A group of eight secretaries suffering from bilateral chronic muscle pain in the shoulder/neck region was compared to a group of healthy subjects. The upper trapezius muscle was studied under isometric contractions, holding the arm in the horizontal plane up to the endurance point. Changes in

Persistence of enterovirus RNA in muscle biopsy samples suggests that some cases of chronic fatigue syndrome result from a previous, inflammatory viral myopathy.

Molecular hybridization using an enterovirus group specific probe detected virus RNA in muscle biopsy samples from 25 of 96 cases of inflammatory muscle disease and similarly from 41 of 158 cases of postviral fatigue syndrome (PFS). Enterovirus RNA was detected in only two of 152 samples of control muscle. The inflammatory myopathy group comprised patients with polymyositis (PM), juvenile dermatomyositis (JDM) or adult dermatomyositis (DM), and all showed the presence of an inflammatory infiltrate and fiber necrosis on histological examination of a muscle biopsy sample. In contrast, muscle sam

Analysis of the effects of low-level laser therapy on muscle fatigue of the biceps brachii muscle of healthy individuals and spastic individuals: Study protocol for a single-center, randomized, double-blind, and controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Muscular fatigue is caused by biochemical alterations that modify the mechanics of muscle contraction, resulting in negative changes in the performance of the contraction. Several resources are studied to mitigate this situation among which we can cite low-level laser therapy (LLLT). The effects of LLLT are being studied in healthy subjects with fibromyalgia and who are athletes, and currently the studies are being performed in spastic muscles with poststroke individuals. The aim will be to evaluate the effects of LLLT on the fatigue of the biceps brachii muscle of healthy individu

Heterologous contralateral repeated bout effect: eccentric knee extensor conditioning enhances neuromuscular fatigue resistance and attenuates muscle stiffness in contralateral elbow flexors in young women.

BACKGROUND: The repeated bout effect (RBE) protects skeletal muscles from exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD). While homologous contralateral RBE is well-documented, the existence of heterologous RBE-specifically whether lower limb conditioning can protect upper limb muscles-remains debated. PURPOSE: This study investigated whether high-intensity eccentric exercise of the knee extensors attenuates eccentric exercise-induced neuromuscular fatigue and muscle stiffness and preserves neuromuscular control in the contralateral elbow flexors. METHODS: Twenty-four sedentary young women were rando

Effects of Ketoanalogue Supplementation and Intradialytic Resistance Exercise on Functional Performance, Fatigue, and Muscle-Related Indices in Maintenance Hemodialysis Patients: A Randomised Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: Patients on maintenance hemodialysis commonly develop protein-energy wasting, sarcopenia, and disabling fatigue. Whether ketoanalogue (KA) supplementation, low-intensity intradialytic resistance exercise, or the two combined can improve physical function over a short period is uncertain. METHODS: In a single-centre, 12-week randomised trial, 100 prevalent hemodialysis patients were allocated 1:1:1:1 to KA only, KA plus exercise, exercise only, or control. The primary outcome was the 30-second sit-to-stand test (STS-30). Secondary outcomes were fatigue (MFIS), handgrip strength, bio

Effect of muscle fatigue of the thoracic erector spinae on neuromuscular control when performing the upper extremity functional tasks in people with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) disrupts spinal alignment and increases the intrinsic demand for active stabilization to maintain postural stability. Understanding the paraspinal muscle fatigability and its effects on spinal alignment and kinematics informs the importance of paraspinal muscle endurance for postural stability. This study aims to investigate the effects of fatigue of thoracic erector spinae on the spinal muscle activity and spinal kinematics in individuals with scoliosis. Spinal muscle activity, posture and mobility measured by electromyography and surface tomography were

Single bout of vibration-induced hamstrings fatigue reduces quadriceps inhibition and coactivation of knee muscles after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction.

Persistent quadriceps strength deficits in individuals with anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLr) have been attributed to arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI). The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of vibration-induced hamstrings fatigue on AMI in patients with ACLr. Eight participants with unilateral ACLr (post-surgery time: M = 46.5, SD = 23.5 months; age: M = 21.4, SD = 1.4 years) and eight individuals with no previous history of knee injury (age: M = 22.5, SD = 2.5 years) were recruited. Phosphorylase re-expression, increase in the force of contraction and decreased fatigue following notexin-induced muscle damage and regeneration in the ovine model of McArdle disease.

McArdle disease is caused by a deficiency of myophosphorylase and currently a satisfactory treatment is not available. The injection of notexin into, or the layering of notexin onto, the muscles of affected sheep resulted in necrosis followed by regeneration of muscle fibres with the expression of both non-muscle isoforms of phosphorylase within the fibres and a reduction of the amount of glycogen in the muscle with an increase in the strength of contraction and a decrease in fatiguability in the muscle fibres. The sustained re-expression of both the brain and liver isoforms of phosphorylase w

Comparison of the Effects of Cold-Water Immersion Applied Alone and Combined Therapy on the Recovery of Muscle Fatigue After Exercise: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Cold-water immersion (CWI), as a common recovery method, has been widely used in the field of post-exercise fatigue recovery. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and systematic scientific evaluation of the combined effects of cold-water immersion combined with other therapies (CWI + Other). The aim of this study was to compare the effects of CWI and CWI + Other in post-exercise fatigue recovery and to explore the potential benefits of CWI + Other. We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and EBSCO databases to include 24 studies (475 subjects in t
