Aural myiasis in children and literature review.

Myiasis is a disease caused by fly larvae. The term "myiasis" is derived from the Greek word "myia" meaning fly. Aural myiasis is a rare clinical state and occurs frequently in children. In this article, six children with aural myiasis, caused by the fly larvae, are reported because of unusual presentation. All of the children with aural myiasis were associated with chronic otitis media. In the treatment, a combination of suctioning and alligator forceps was used to remove maggots under the light microscopic field. Additionally, antibiotics were used in all children. Thus, aural myiasis is suc…

A study of cutaneous myiasis in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Cutaneous myiasis (CM) due to Diptera fly larvae shows different patterns in different regions. Many modalities of treatment have been described. The objectives of our study were to identify the species causing CM in Sri Lanka, the common sites of infestation, and the contributory factors, and to assess some treatment modalities, in particular mineral turpentine and certain herbal preparations. METHODS: All patients with CM admitted or referred to the Dermatology Unit at the General Hospital, Kalutara, over 18 months starting from July 1997, and all patients with CM…

Traumatic myiasis of sheep in Europe: a review.

The two most important fly species causing traumatic cutaneous myiasis of sheep in Europe are Wohlfahrtia magnifica (Diptera: Sarcophagidae), which causes a form of myiasis known as wound myiasis, mainly in southern and eastern Europe, and Lucilia sericata (Diptera: Calliphoridae), which causes sheep strike, mainly in the middle latitudes of Europe. Other calliphorid blow-flies play a role mainly as secondary agents of myiasis, but in northern latitudes the L. caesar/illustris group are primary agents. Infestation levels vary greatly from region to region depending on a wide range of factors r…

[Conjunctival myiasis, a frequent pathology in Corsica].

Fifteen cases have been reported and treated in the Ajaccio eye department. The larva involved is most of the time Oestrus ovis and is responsible for an acute unilateral conjunctivitis. The conjunctiva is swollen and scattered with petechiae due to the hooks of the larva. Five to 15 maggots are extracted with a forceps after instillation of topical anesthetic, leading to relief of symptoms within a few days.

Preliminary observations on myiasis in leprosy patients.

Out of 3350 leprosy patients attending the surgical outpatient department for various ulcerative lesions, 18 patients had typical symptoms of myiasis. Maggots were collected in 5 cases from the nose, in 3 cases from ulcers of the hand and in 10 cases from ulcers of the foot. It was possible to rear the maggots into flies in 8 out of 18 cases. The flies were identified as Sarcophaga ruficornis and Chrysomyia bezziana.

Destructive ocular myiasis in a noncompromised host.

A case of destructive ocular myiasis resulting in complete loss of the globe in two days time is documented. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of such a severe involvement in a healthy and non-compromised host. Mechanical removal and good local hygiene helped heal the wound. The larvae were isolated to be that of Chrysomyia bezziana (screwworm fly). This is possibly the first report of destructive ocular myiasis caused by Chrysomyia bezziana from the Indian subcontinent and the second in world literature. Infestation of human eyes with larvae of flies (myiasis) has been rep…
