A new monoclonal antibody, Y1/82A, was raised against phytohaemagglutinin activated peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Using an immunohistochemical technique it was shown that Y1/82A reacts against peripheral blood and bone marrow monocytes and resident macrophages from essentially all human tissues. Y1/82A bound to determinants present in leukaemic cells from patients with acute myelomonocytic leukaemia and acute monocytic leukaemia, but not to neoplastic cells from patients with malignant lymphoproliferative disorders or malignant epithelial tumours. Y1/82A failed to react with other cell t

Myeloid sarcoma is an extramedullary collection of blasts of the myeloid series that partially or totally effaces the architecture of the tissue in which it is found. These tumors have been described in many sites of the body, but the skin, lymph nodes, gastrointestinal tract, bone, soft tissue, and testes are most common. They can arise in a patient following the diagnosis of acute myeloid leukemia, but they may also be precursors of leukemia and should be considered diagnostic for acute myeloid leukemia. The differential diagnosis of this neoplasm includes malignant lymphoma, with which it i

Extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) is a rare malignant mesenchymal neoplasm that accounts for less than 4% of all osteosarcomas and approximately 1-2% of all soft tissue sarcomas. The tumor is typically located in the deep soft tissues, without attachment to skeletal bones. Although ESOS has been found todevelop virtually in every organ, its most common locations are the limbs. In the case of abdominal or pelvic lesions the diagnosis can be very difficult, thus it necessarily requires confirmation after exploratory laparotomy and histopathology. Such tumors may reach enormous sizes before detec

Patients who have sustained an avulsion fracture and present clinically during the healing phase of the injury may manifest a mass that clinically and radiographically mimics a malignant neoplasm. A 15-year-old male soccer goalkeeper presented with a large ossified mass in the soft tissues overlying the right hip 6 months after experiencing a popping sensation in his hip joint during a game. Although an osteosarcoma was suspected clinically and radiographically, a Tru-Cut needle biopsy of the lesion revealed reactive bone formation. Correlation of the clinical, radiographic, and pathologic fin

Although plain radiographs of the chest are usually requested to evaluate the heart, lung, and mediastinum, many bone and soft tissue, metabolic, and congenital lesions can be visible presenting as surprising lesions. Thorough analysis of the lesion characteristics on the chest radiograph, eventually in conjunction with more advanced imaging techniques and in combination with the clinical findings, will lead to the correct diagnosis.

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a paraneoplastic syndrome resulting in renal phosphate wasting and decreased bone mineralization. TIO is usually induced by small, slowly growing tumors of mesenchymal origin (phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor mixed connective tissue variant [PMTMCT]). Nonspecific symptoms including fatigue, bone pain, and musculoskeletal weakness make the diagnosis elusive and often lead to a delay in treatment. The prognosis of TIO is excellent following complete resection of the neoplasm, which leads to the rapid and complete reversal of all symptoms. If the tumor cannot be

Extramedullary plasmacytoma is the uncommon phenomenon of a plasma cell neoplasm occurring outside of the bone marrow. Primary plasmacytoma is a rare occurrence in the gastrointestinal tract and exceptional to originate in the esophagus. We present a novel case of a 62-year-old man who presented to our emergency department with chest pain. A cardiovascular workup was negative, and an endoscopy was subsequently performed. The endoscopy findings showed evidence of Grade IV esophagitis with ulcerations extending from 25 cm to 32 cm. Histopathological examination revealed marked acute and chronic

Solitary myofibroma of adults is an uncommon neoplasm that typically arises in soft tissue and subcutaneous sites in the head and neck, but rarely within bone. When encountered in the jaws, the lesions exhibit clinical and radiographic features suggestive of an odontogenic tumor or cyst as well as several other neoplastic conditions. Tooth mobility, displacement of teeth, and dramatic jaw expansion may be observed. Analogous to other sites of involvement, gnathic myofibromas are biologically indolent and show little or no recurrence following excision. In rare instances, however, the ability t

Lymphoblastic lymphoma (LBL) is a neoplasm of lymphoid precursors presenting usually as acute leukemia with bone marrow and peripheral blood involvement. Primary cutaneous involvement of LBL with a pre-B phenotype has to be considered an extremely uncommon occurrence, accounting for less than 1% of all non-Hodgkin lymphomas. A child with an LBL involving a single cutaneous manifestation of 6 months duration is presented. At the time of presentation, the lesion consisted of a rapidly enlarging deeply infiltrated tumor on the upper arm. Immunophenotypic analysis performed an paraffin-embedded an

Adamantinoma of the long bones is a rare, typically low-grade malignant tumor that frequently involves the tibia. Radiographically, adamantinoma is characteristically a lytic, intracortical, and expansile lesion with variable margins. Histologically, adamantinoma is a bimorphic neoplasm, composed of epithelial and osteofibrous elements. Herein, we describe a 72-year-old man with a long-standing tibial mass that, on imaging, rapidly developed cortical destruction with soft tissue extension. Imaging revealed no evidence of a distant site of origin. Needle core biopsy demonstrated high-grade squa

Plasmacytoid dendritic cells (pDCs) are innate sentinels that produce type I interferons (IFN-I) during infection. Here, we asked how developmental stage and tissue context shape human pDC transcriptional states. Single-cell RNA sequencing of pDCs from blood, thymus, lymph nodes, and tonsils across fetal, infant, and pediatric stages revealed tissue-enriched programs, including IFN-I-imprinted pDCs in the thymus, NF-κB-imprinted pDCs in tonsils, and resting pDCs in blood and lymph nodes. Across tissues, we identified a pDC subset characterized by prostaglandin D2 production and dopamine respon

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize the causes of death and compute the risk of mortality due to each cause among patients with malignant adrenal tumours.
METHODS: Data from malignant adrenal tumour patients were collected from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database (2004-2020). With reference data from the general population, the standardized mortality ratio (SMR) was calculated to assess all causes of death for malignant adrenal tumour patients.
RESULTS: A total of 1651 patients who died from primary malignant adrenal neoplasms were included; 854 cases of a

BACKGROUND: Glomus tumours are neoplasms arising from cells of the neuromyoarterial glomus bodies, which almost always occur in a subungual location. A lung location is extremely rare, with few cases reported in the literature.
CLINICAL CASE: The case is presented of a 33 year-old male, with non-productive cough, dyspnoea at rest, intermittent fever, and mild pain in rib cage. A chest radiograph showed a consolidation in the left lung, and computed tomography revealed a lesion in the hilum that extended to the bronchus of the lingula obstructing, and causing post-obstructive pneumonia. A biop

BACKGROUND: CD2 is expressed by T and natural killer (NK) cells and has been reported in T/NK cell lineage neoplasms as well as in immature B-lymphoblastic and myeloid leukemias. Although CD2+ B-cells have been identified in normal fetal and postnatal thymus, they have not been reported in adults.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed flow cytometric immunophenotypic data on consecutive low-grade B-cell leukemias and lymphomas to investigate the frequency of CD2 expression. We also reviewed samples from normal healthy donors to determine whether there is a normal CD2+ B-cell population.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cell tumor (GCT) of bone is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm that most commonly involves the epiphyseal-metaphyseal regions of long bones. Involvement of the foot is rare, and occurrence in the distal phalanx of the great toe is exceptionally uncommon. GCTs arising in small bones are known to exhibit more aggressive behavior and higher recurrence rates than those in long bones, posing challenges for management.
CASE REPORT: We report the case of a young adult presenting with progressive pain and swelling of the great toe. Radiographs and magnetic resonance imaging

Approximately 20% of patients with systemic mastocytosis (SM) have an associated haematological, clonal, non-mast cell lineage disease, and most exhibit an associated myelogenous neoplasm. This report describes a 48 year old man with acute myeloid leukaemia (AML) and a type t(8;21) cytogenetic abnormality. Associated bone marrow mastocytosis (a defined subtype of SM) was only detected after successful polychemotherapy in the state of bone marrow aplasia, and persisted after complete remission of AML. The diagnosis of mastocytosis was based on the demonstration of a multifocal dense mastocytic

Myeloid/lymphoid neoplasms (M/LN) with 13q12/FLT3 rearrangement have been suggested as candidates for possible inclusion in the World Health Organization classification group of M/LN with eosinophilia (M/LN-eo). We report 12 patients with confirmed FLT3 rearrangement, six with t(12;13)/ETV6-FLT3; one with ins(13;22)/BCR-FLT3; and five with an unconfirmed partner gene located on chromosome bands 2p16, 3q27, 5q15, 5q35, and 7q36. Disease presentations were heterogeneous, including lymphoblastic leukemia/lymphoma, myeloid sarcoma, chronic eosinophilic leukemia, chronic myelomonocytic leukemia, an

Myoepithelial tumors (MET) of soft tissue and bone comprise a rare group of neoplasms unified by partially overlapping morphology and so called myoepithelial immunophenotype. Historically, MET have long posed diagnostic and prognostic challenges. Grading and risk stratification have relied largely on the presence of cytologic atypia. Recent molecular and epigenetic studies have fundamentally revised this concept, demonstrating that MET represent a biologically heterogeneous family rather than a single disease entity. Soft tissue (mostly deep-seated) and osseous MET frequently harbor recurrent

Primary osteosarcomas are rarely seen in areas other than bone, although they can occur in sites such as the thigh, anal region, hand, etc. We present a case of primary extraskeletal osteosarcoma of the thyroid, of which there are only 29 previous reported cases. Presentations and treatment options for this type of tumor vary. Through this case report, we discuss the similarities and differences of the patient's presentation compared with other documented cases, imaging, the rationale behind treatment, and the current clinical course.
