Amputation neuromas occasionally follow division of the cervical plexus during classical neck dissection. They present as painful, subcutaneous, and fixed tumours. They must be removed to exclude recurrence of the primary disease. The differential diagnosis includes neurilemmoma, solitary neurofibroma, neurofibromatosis, neuro-muscular hamartoma, and benign myxoid tumours. Histological diagnosis is particularly easy especially if immunohistochemistry with markers against neural tissues is used. However, to prevent recurrence, the central nerve stump should be exposed, ligated after removal of

The histopathologic features of 312 odontogenic keratocysts are described. These features are discussed in relation to their pathogenesis and behavioral characteristics, including recurrence factors and neoplastic potential. In addition, a discussion and comparison of the histologic features found in solitary keratocysts, keratocysts associated with the basal-cell nevus--bifid rib syndrome, multiple keratocysts in patients with no other syndrome manifestations, and recurrent kerocysts is presented.

This paper deals with an unusually high incidence, i.e. 0.97 % of carcinoma of the small intestine found in Icelandic sheep. The tumours were situated in the jejunum and upper ileum. The macroscopic and microscopic pathology is described and compared with carcinoma of the small intestine of domestic animals and humans. Aetiological factors are discussed and the possibility of exposure to carcinogenic substances, especially nitrosamines in food concentrates, is suggested. Finally these findings are discussed in relation to current ideas on carcinogenesis in the intestines.

Since 1963 in the All-Union Research Institute of Clinical and Experimental Surgery 1445 patients with malignant lung tumors were operated upon, in 44 patients (3%) rare tumors were observed. The source of the rare tumors origination was: epithelium--in 14 cases, connective tissue--in 3, vessels--in 10, smooth muscle--in 3, nervous tissue--in 2, hemopoietic tissue--in 6, pleura--in 4. In one observation the tumor showed a mixed genesis, and in one case it exhibited a dysembryogenetic character. Rare malignant lung tumors (especially sarcomas, plasmocytomas, mesotheliomas) show a definite speci

Osteoid osteoma and radiofrequency Osteoid osteoma relates to a benign skeletal neoplasm, smaller than 2 cm in diameter, composed of osteoid, highly vascularized connective tissue and surrounded by a ring of bone sclerosis. Its aetiology remains unknown. It affects twice more males than female patients and occurs usually between 5 and 40 years old. Long bones and spine are the most involved areas but the whole skeleton can be involved. Clinical manifestations can include local pain (increased at night and decreased by activity) and relief with salicylates administration. CT guided radiofrequen

UNLABELLED: A 34 year-old Afro-Caribbean female presented with recurring episodes of fever and lower abdominal pain over a period of two months not improving despite courses of antibiotics for possible recurrent urinary tract infections. On admission to hospital, patient was treated for a possible pyelonephritis or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Extensive investigations into possible source of infection were carried out. However, all of the repeated microbiological cultures were normal. Patient was investigated further for other possible causes including connective tissue disease, haematol

Lupus nephritis (LN) with a membranoproliferative pattern is an uncommon but recognized renal manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). While autoimmune myelofibrosis (AMF) has been described in association with SLE, the coexistence of primary myelofibrosis (PMF) with this pattern of LN has not been previously documented. We report a 50-year-old man with JAK2-positive PMF, undifferentiated connective tissue disease (UCTD), and Stage 3b chronic kidney disease who developed nephrotic syndrome and worsening kidney function. Initial serologic evaluation revealed positive antinuclear ant

A 49-year-old woman presented with a 16-year history of burning pain, warmth, redness, and edema in both toes, feet, legs and calves. Despite extensive medical testing, including genetic analysis, no specific cause was identified. Initial treatments failed to improve symptoms, leading to impaired quality of life and mental health. Eventually, a six-month course of intravenous immunoglobulin therapy provided complete relief, allowing the patient to resume normal activities. Erythromelalgia is a rare neurovascular condition characterized by pain, warmth, and erythema in the extremities. It can m

Modern molecular biology and clinical genetics have the ability to diagnose many diseases, the presence or absence of which is important in various areas of forensic medical opinion. The aim of the study is to present examples of possible non-standard application of clinical molecular-genetic tests in forensic medicine. From among all the opinions prepared so far at the Department of Forensic Medicine in Katowice, three were selected two of which concerned post-autopsy conclusions relating to the cause of death, and in one case - opinion based on the files of a case related to the suspicion of

BACKGROUND: Atypical cutaneous lymphoid infiltrates are challenging lesions in dermatopathology. We present a summary of the literature regarding kappa and lambda immunohistochemistry (IHC) and in situ hybridization (ISH) in the evaluation of atypical cutaneous or mucosal lymphoid infiltrates.
METHODS: Relevant articles from 1967 to 2018 in the English language were identified and summarized. In the absence of larger studies, case series of n ≥ 3 were included.
RESULTS: Sixty-three articles assessing kappa and lambda IHC and/or ISH were identified. Most focused on marginal zone lymphomas. Ot

OBJECTIVES: The association between post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and medical comorbidities is controversial since most studies focused on specific comorbidity and victim types. In Italy, data on this issue are scarce. A comprehensive evaluation of all the ICD medical categories co-occurring in PTSD may orient assessment and treatment during clinical and forensic practice. This is the first study evaluating all the ICD physical comorbidities and gender-related differences in Italian PTSD patients. Eighty-four PTSD patients (36 females, 48 males) were included. The Clinician-Administere

Primary myelofibrosis (PMF) is characterized by leukoerythroblastic anemia with circulating immature myeloid cells, including CD34+ cells, progressive splenomegaly and accumulation of connective tissue and neoangiogenesis in the bone marrow. Altered bone marrow stroma and cell adherence account for the egress of CD34+ cells from the bone marrow. Carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecule (CEACAM) 6 has been implicated in cell adhesion, cellular invasiveness, angiogenesis, and inflammation, which are all key processes in the pathophysiology of PMF. Accordingly, CEACAMs may play an

The 72 mesothelioma-like tumors of the pleura (MLTP) found among 33 500 autopsy cases collected over more than 30 years are reviewed. MLTP have a worse prognosis than the 106 cases of pleural mesothelioma autopsied in our institutes with regard to survival time and metastatic spread. In MLTP, adenocarcinomas predominate with a wide range of histological and cytological variation and prominent development of connective tissue having its origin in the periphery of the lung. These intrapulmonary primary tumors often fulfill the criteria of pulmonary scar cancer. Etiologically, there is no correla

Palisaded neutrophilic and granulomatous dermatitis (PNGD) is a relatively rare histopathologic reaction pattern that has been associated with several underlying conditions including rheumatoid arthritis, connective tissue disorders, certain drugs, and hematologic malignancies, particularly chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). CMML shows features of a myeloproliferative neoplasm and myelodysplastic syndrome. The diagnosis can be supported by identifying an acquired clonal molecular abnormality, most commonly involving TET2, SRSF2, ASXL1, RUNX1, NRAS , or CBL . Rare previous reports have hig

As with other parts of the musculoskeletal system, the soft tissues of the foot can be affected by a wide variety of pathologic entities including trauma, congenital abnormalities, infections, and neoplastic disorders. While plain radiographs are usually the initial examination for evaluation of pathology, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is critical to evaluate for abnormalities within the ligaments, tendons, and other nonosseous structures within the foot. The constellation of clinical and MRI findings often allows a relatively specific diagnosis to be rendered. This article discusses both b
