OBJECTIVE: To establish a rabbit model of cerebral spinal flow metastasis, to analyze the growth rate of tumor, and to investigate the value of MRI in monitoring the biology of tumor compared with pathology.
METHODS: Twenty-four New Zealand white rabbits were inoculated with suspension of VX(2) tumor cells in the subarachnoid space via the foramen magnum (experimental group), and 6 rabbits were inoculated with normal saline (control group). The 'spontaneous' development of pituitary tumours has been studied in the Wistar-Furth strain of rat. In females aged 64--135 weeks the incidence was as high as 69% whereas in males aged 72--116 weeks only 6% developed tumours. Hyperprolactinaemia was invariably associated with these spontaneous pituitary tumours but excessive secretion of growth hormone (GH) was found in one animal only. Bromocriptine inhibited secretion of prolactin and DNA synthesis of the tumours. The effect of vitamin A deficiency on the sensitivity of the colon to the carcinogenic effect of N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (MNNG), a direct-acting carcinogen, given intrarectally was studied in female Fischer rats. Animals maintained on Purina laboratory chow, semipurified vitamin A-free diet, or semipurified vitamine A-supplemented diet were given intrarectally 1.25, 0.63, or 0.31 mg MNNG 3 times weekly for 30 weeks and autopsied at the 45th week. The number of large bowel tumors per tumor-bearing rat was higher in animals receiving 1.25 mg MNNG compared to those given 0.63 or 0.31

Human hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) develops most often as a complication of fibrosis or cirrhosis. We studied the effects of splenectomy in normal and methylcellulose-induced hypersplenic rats on the development of pulmonary metastases created by intravenous injection of ascites containing AH130 hepatoma cells from male Hos-Donryu rats. Dermal sarcoma is a benign skin tumor of adult walleyes (Stizostedion vitreum vitreum) with a suspected viral etiology. 180 male Wistar-rats were daily exposed to 30 and 100 mg MNNG/1000 ccm tapwater. After 7 weeks exposure a truncal vagotomy with pyloroplasty or a Billroth-II-resection was performed in 25 animals of each dosage-group. 80 rats were not operated. The incidence of carcinomas in the Billroth-II-rats of both dosage-groups was evidently higher than in the exposed controls. In the vagotomized rats an increased occurrence of carcinomas could not be observed.
