BACKGROUND: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD), also known as sinus histiocytosis with massive lymphadenopathy, is a rare non-malignant disorder characterized by excessive proliferation of histiocytes, the cause of which remains unknown. Although the lymph nodes are the most commonly affected site, some patients may present with extranodal involvement, particularly in the skin, nasal cavity, eyes, and bones. In this report, we aim to present a unique case of RDD with pleural involvement in a 61-year-old patient. To our knowledge, only a few cases of RDD primarily manifesting as pleural disease have b

The clinical records and histopathologic features in 26 cases of extraskeletal osteosarcoma (ESOS) diagnosed at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston) between 1950 and 1987 were reviewed. Presentation was usually that of an enlarging soft tissue mass. The thigh (11 cases), upper extremity/shoulder girdle (three cases), and retroperitoneum (three cases) were the most common anatomic sites. Tumor size ranged from 2.5 to 30 cm. The predominant histologic pattern was osteoblastic in four cases, chondroblastic in two, fibroblastic or pleomorphic malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH)-like in four, gia

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that was originally described to be localized in the pleura, but thereafter, this has been reported in several anatomic sites. Although the etiology of the neoplasm remains largely unknown, the pathogenesis seems to be related to an NAB2-STAT6 fusion gene due to paracentric inversion on chromosome 12q13. The diagnosis of extrapleural SFT is challenging, owing to its rarity, and requires an integrated approach that includes specific clinical, histological, immunohistochemical, and even molecular findings. Histologically, extrapleural SFT sh

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) TNM staging system defines atypical parathyroid neoplasia (APN) as tumor in situ (Tis) and reserves the definition of parathyroid carcinoma (PC) to parathyroid tumor with invasion into surrounding structures. Because the parathyroid gland has no true capsule, "extension" with APN versus microscopic "invasion" of surrounding soft tissue can be difficult and confusing for clinicians. We aimed to determine the clinical course of atypical parathyroid neoplasm with and without soft tissue extension and parathyroid carcinoma wi

Patients with chronic nasal congestion can have causes other than allergic and vasomotor rhinitis for their symptoms. Commonly, patients with nasal stuffiness have mechanical factors such as nasal polyps and nasal septal deformities that cause obstruction. Rare causes of nasal symptoms include sarcoidosis, Wegener's granulomatosis, and both benign and malignant tumors. Another uncommon cause of nasal symptoms is obstruction of the nose due to masses in the nasopharynx. In this article, we describe two adult patients with nasopharyngeal masses who had nasal symptoms initially thought to be alle

Myxofibrosarcoma is one of the most common sarcomas in the extremities of elderly people and is characterized by a high frequency of local recurrence. We report a rare case of high-grade myxofibrosarcoma involving the forearm and presenting as acute carpal tunnel syndrome where absence of a discrete mass lesion and diffuse infiltrative nature precluded early recognition of tumor. To our knowledge, such a presentation with an extreme infiltrative growth pattern in the forearm has not been reported before.

Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) is a mesenchymal tumor which has been identified in a wide variety of localizations, including soft tissues, peritoneum, retroperitoneum, mediastinum, upper respiratory tract, nasopharyngeal sinuses, periosteum and extremities, orbit, major body cavities, intraspinal and intracranial localizations. The authors describe a case of SFT found in the neck of a young patient suffering from Arnold's neuralgia. After surgery, diagnosis of SFT was based on characteristic histopathological findings, especially on immunohistochemical positive staining for CD34 antigen. It has

Recently, the category of malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) has been under discussion and new entities resembling MFH have appeared. To clarify the recent situation regarding MFH, we reassessed previously diagnosed MFH cases in accordance with the most up-to-date diagnostic criteria, which included allied tumors. We carefully reassessed 428 cases that had been diagnosed in our institute during the past 28 years. Moreover, we searched for clinicopathological prognostic factors among the cases that were finally diagnosed as MFH. Among the 428 cases, 138 cases had their diagnoses changed. The

Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) is an aggressive soft-tissue sarcoma that most commonly occurs in the skeletal muscle of the extremities or retroperitoneum of adults. Although the majority of MFH is located beneath the fascia, the tumor occasionally occurs in the subcutaneous tissue. MFH rarely occurs in children and the disease course, prognosis, and outcome in younger patients has not been well described. We report a case of cutaneous MFH presenting on the thigh of a 12-year-old boy.

Solitary fibrous tumors are well-described neoplasms found predominantly in the subpleural region but also in many other body sites. They generally behave in a benign fashion, although a few cases that exhibit a malignant course have been reported. Genetic information on solitary fibrous tumors is sparse. This case illustrates a previously unreported finding of a tumor-specific t(9;22)(q31;p13) in a solitary fibrous tumor of the orbit of a 58-year-old man.

During an investigation of soft tissue fibrohistiocytic tumors, seven cases were found which we believe represent a new and specific diagnostic subgroup of fibrous histiocytomas. All patients were adults (mean 52.6 years), only one of whom was younger than age 40. There were four females and three males; all were Caucasian. The tumors which occurred in the retroperitoneum, anterior chest wall, anterior abdominal wall, femoral area, and oral cavity, were large, averaging 8.5 cm., and although appearing encapsulated, were microscopically infiltrative. The common histologic feature of all cases w

Coracoid impingement syndrome results from subscapularis tendon entrapment between the humerus and the coracoid. This syndrome is an uncommon cause of shoulder pain that has many different aetiologies. Although synovial cysts have been reported as cause of coracoid impingement at this level, solid tumoural lesions are a rare cause of symptoms in this location. Two cases of benign soft tissue solid tumours are presented. Both patients developed symptoms compatible with coracoid impingement syndrome. The lesions were fully resected under arthroscopic visualization. Both patients had complete res

In a recent publication, reporting the sixth case of aortic angiosarcoma, probably induced by the implantation of a dacron vascular prosthesis, Weiss et al. have done a literature review concerning the association between the presence of vascular prostheses and the onset of mesenchymal neoplasms. Although they consider the incidence of this association very low, they also point out the hypothesis, largely supported by experimental studies, that vascular prostheses can play the role of aetiological co-factor or factor in the onset of these tumors. We consider useful to report a case of malignan

BACKGROUND: Low-grade malignant endolymphatic sac tumor (ELST) is a rare neoplasm, occurring in the inner ear and invading the temporal bone. This study aims to investigate the clinicopathological features of low-grade malignant ELSTs.
METHODS: The clinicopathological data of 21 patients with low-grade malignant ELSTs were collected and analyzed.
RESULTS: The patients were aged 16-71 years, with an average age of 40.3 years and a median age of 39 years, and the male to female ratio was 1:1.6. There were 13 cases (61.9%) of ELSTs occurring on the left side, 7 cases (33.3%) on the right side,

INTRODUCTION: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (EBV+ inflammatory FDCS) is a rare neoplasm that occurs almost exclusively in the spleen and liver. Although EBV+ inflammatory FDCS is recognized to show indolent behavior, its pathophysiology including the pathogenesis remains unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present an EBV+ inflammatory FDCS, which occurred in the spleen of a patient under the follow-up for chemotherapy against lung carcinoma. Sequential CT examinations reveal that a splenic lesion was first detectable 5 years after chemotherapy and

TRAF7 mutations are a rare occurrence in human cancer and have recently been described in a group of mesenchymal tumors with varying clinical course. Herein, we expand the spectrum of TRAF7-mutated fibromyxoid spindle cell tumors by reporting the first case to arise in bone. A 60-year-old woman presented with right knee pain and was incidentally found to have a left distal femur lesion, which was first detected 20 years prior when it was favored to be benign. Recent imaging studies revealed significant interval growth with focal cortical destruction and soft tissue extension. Histologic examin
