Endobronchial Leiomyoma: A case report with cryoprobe extraction and review of literature.

Large airway tumors are uncommon, accounting for about 0.6% of all pulmonary tumors [[1], [2], [3]]. The majority of these tumors (80-90%) are malignant, represented primarily by squamous cell carcinoma and adenoid cystic carcinoma [2,4]. Benign central airway tumors are less common and are generally comprised of hamartomas and papillomas. Tracheobronchial leiomyomas are exceedingly rare, representing only about 0.6% of all benign lung neoplasms [3]. We report here on a case of primary endobronchial leiomyoma without uterine involvement treated successfully with cryoresection with excellent ou

Successful treatment of hydroxyurea-associated chronic leg ulcers associated with squamous cell carcinoma.

Hydroxyurea (HU) is an antineoplastic drug used in the treatment of chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPNs). HU is associated with cutaneous adverse effects, whereas severe complications such as leg ulcers and non-melanoma skin cancers (NMSCs) are rare and only observed after long-term treatment. We herein report a patient with essential thrombocythemia (ET) treated chronically with HU, and who developed refractory bilateral leg ulcers complicated by squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) over both heels. The patient was successfully managed by multiple debridement stages and skin grafting surgerie

Multiple keratoses and squamous carcinoma after PUVA treatment of vitiligo.

PUVA is known to be carcinogenic when used in the treatment of psoriasis. To date skin cancer has not been demonstrated after PUVA treatment of vitiligo. We report a patient in whom multiple squamous cell carcinomata and keratoses developed in vitiligo areas after a prolonged course of PUVA. PUVA therapy of vitiligo induces repigmentation of affected skin in some patients. An increased frequency of cutaneous neoplasms in depigmented areas is a potential hazard, as in these sites the photoprotective effect of melanin is lacking.

Cutaneous basaloid squamous cell carcinoma in a captive blue-fronted amazon (Amazona aestiva) in Paraguay: gross description, histological and immunohistochemical findings.

Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is a malignant neoplasm that usually arises from the integument, and is reported uncommonly in pet birds. Basaloid SCC is a variant from the prototypic squamous cell carcinoma and is a biologically high grade tumor that shows a sharp predilection for the base of the tongue, the hypopharynx and the supraglottic larynx, manifesting deep and lateral invasion. We present the case of an Amazon aestiva from Paraguay with a basaloid SCC in the skin, of 8 months of evolution. Histologically, the findings were compatible with poorly differentiated carcinoma, and immunohist

Conjunctival mucoepidermoid carcinoma in a patient with ocular cicatricial pemphigoid and a review of the literature.

Invasive mucoepidermoid carcinoma of the conjunctiva of the left lower eyelid was diagnosed in an orbital exenteration specimen of a 57-year-old woman, after a biopsy of the same lesion was originally diagnosed as invasive squamous cell carcinoma. The woman was undergoing mitomycin C injections for ocular cicatricial pemphigoid, diagnosed in the same eye 2 years prior to identification of the neoplasm. The tumor invaded the cornea, sclera, lacrimal gland, regional small nerves, and lymphatics, but did not show intraocular involvement. The original biopsy specimen was reassessed with stains for

Digital Lesions in Dogs: A Statistical Breed Analysis of 2912 Cases.

Breed predispositions to canine digital neoplasms are well known. However, there is currently no statistical analysis identifying the least affected breeds. To this end, 2912 canine amputated digits submitted from 2014-2019 to the Laboklin GmbH & Co. KG for routine diagnostics were statistically analyzed. The study population consisted of 155 different breeds (most common: 634 Mongrels, 411 Schnauzers, 197 Labrador Retrievers, 93 Golden Retrievers). Non-neoplastic processes were present in 1246 (43%), tumor-like lesions in 138 (5%), and neoplasms in 1528 cases (52%). Benign tumors (n = 335) we

Sebaceous carcinoma of scalp with proliferating trichilemmal cyst.

Sebaceous carcinoma is a rare neoplasm of the sebaceous gland. It is diagnosed mainly on histopathology and, clinically, it may mimic other neoplasms like squamous or basal cell carcinoma. We came across a patient presenting with a non-healing ulcer over the left temporo-parietal region of the scalp since 4 years and a single asymptomatic nodule over the occipital region since 3 years. Histopathology from an ulcer was pathognomonic of sebaceous carcinoma and that from a nodule was suggestive of proliferating trichilemmal cyst. The patient was screened for Muir Torre syndrome. We referred the p

Metastatic Syringocystadenocarcinoma Papilliferum Mimicking Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma of Unknown Primary in a Young Patient.

We report an unusual case of metastatic syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum in an 18-year-old man who presented with cervical lymph node metastasis initially diagnosed as dedifferentiated squamous cell carcinoma of unknown primary. Extensive diagnostic workup failed to identify a primary tumor, until reexcision of a childhood scalp lesion revealed a deeply infiltrative adnexal neoplasm with ductal differentiation consistent with syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum, and comparison of the lymph node specimens with the scalp specimen showed cytological similarities. This case emphasizes tha

Primary Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Thyroid: A Case Report and Literature Review About a Rare Entity.

Primary squamous cell carcinoma of the thyroid (PSCCT) is a rare and aggressive neoplasm that accounts for less than 1% of all thyroid malignancies. Its incidence is higher in females in their fifth and sixth decades of life. The pathophysiology of PSCCT is still a subject of debate as squamous cells are generally absent in the thyroid gland under normal physiologic conditions. Immunohistochemistry is important for reaching a definite diagnosis as it helps to differentiate PSCCT from metastases from other primary sites. Clinically, PSCCT usually presents as a rapidly enlarging anterior neck ma

Efficacy of BCG vaccine and Mitomycin C for the treatment of ocular squamous cell carcinoma in bovines.

Bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma (BOSCC) also called cancer eye, represents the most economically important neoplasm in large animals. Hereditary factors, environmental factors, lack of eyelid pigmentation, age and dietary habits have all been reported to play a role in the etiopathogenesis of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma. In group I, six animals with small, localized eye cancer where vision was not affected were included and subjected to intralesional injection of Bacillus Calmette- Guerin (BCG) vaccine at 0, 14, 35, and 56 days interval. In group II (six animals), surgical exci

Ocular squamous cell carcinoma in cattle: clinicopathological and prognostic considerations.

Ocular and periocular neoplasms in cattle are of great clinical and economic significance, with squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) being the most prevalent. The aim of this study was to analyze the occurrence of neoplasms in these regions in cattle from the Agreste region of Pernambuco by evaluating 45 cases (25 retrospective and 20 prospective), including clinical, epidemiological, and morphological data. SCC was the most frequent tumor (n = 43), with one case of papilloma also observed. In addition, one ocular dermoid, a non-neoplastic lesion, was identified. SCC was mainly located in the third e

Necrotizing sialometaplasia. Report of a case.

Necrotizing sialometaplasia occurred in a 46-year-old woman. This is an uncommon benign disease that typically begins with an ulcerated lesion on the hard palate and surrounding tissues. Clinical and microscopic findings show obvious similarity with a malignant neoplasm. Necrotizing sialometapiasis is a benign minor salivary gland disease. It is important since it may easily be confused with squamous cell carcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma.

Head and Neck Cystic Lesions: A Cytology Review of Common and Uncommon Entities.

BACKGROUND: Cystic lesions of the head and neck are a diagnostic challenge since they are seen in the clinical presentation of a wide variety of conditions. Herein, common and uncommon entities that present as cystic lesions in the head and neck are reviewed. SUMMARY: In this study, peer-reviewed articles were selected using the database PubMed, Google, Google Scholar, and Scopus. Emphasis was placed on peer-reviewed articles that discuss the cytomorphology and differential diagnosis of entities that present as cystic lesions of the head and neck. In the anterior neck, both benign and maligna

Mandibular intraosseous pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia is a rare and generally benign pathology. We report on one of these rare cases. CASE PRESENTATION: The case history of a 73-year-old white man stated that he had a carcinoma of the oropharynx, which was primarily treated with radiotherapy and chemotherapy 4 years prior. As a result of radiotherapy he developed an osteoradionecrosis of his mandible and a consecutive pathological fracture of his left mandibular angle. Subsequent osteosynthesis was performed with a reconstruction plate. When we first saw him, his reconstruction plate was par

Seborrhoeic Keratosis of External Auditory Canal & its Management.

INTRODUCTION: Seborrhoeic keratosis (SK) is a benign neoplasm of the skin. They are usually found to occur anywhere in the body except palms, soles and mucous membranes. The skin of the external auditory canal is an extremely rare site for the occurrence of this benign neoplasm. Malignant transformation rarely occurs in this benign condition. It should be differentiated from other malignant condition like squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, Bowen's disease, malignant melanoma or keratoacanthoma. Surgery is the mainstay of treatment though recurrence is very common. It can be removed

Loss of MHC Class I Expression in HPV-associated Cervical and Vulvar Neoplasia: A Potential Mechanism of Resistance to Checkpoint Inhibition.

Tumor cell expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I is required for antigen presentation and adaptive immune recognition. Absent or diminished MHC class I expression is thought to contribute to immunotherapeutic resistance in some epithelial tumors but has not been previously studied in cervical and vulvar carcinoma. Given that anti-programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) checkpoint inhibition is deployed for programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1)-positive recurrent and metastatic cervical squamous carcinomas, identifying tumors with loss of MHC class I is of clinical interest to op

Fine-needle aspiration cytologic features of pseudovascular adenoid squamous-cell carcinoma of the lung.

Pseudovascular adenoid squamous-cell carcinoma (PASCC) is an epithelial malignancy with spindle-cell features that can mimic vascular neoplasms, particularly angiosarcoma, in its morphologic characteristics. There have been only a few surgical pathology reports of PASCC arising in the lung, skin, and breast. We describe the fine-needle aspiration (FNA) cytologic and histologic features of a pulmonary PASCC in a 66-yr-old man. The aspiration yielded individually scattered and syncytial fragments of malignant epithelioid-appearing cells with oval to spindle shapes, prominent nucleoli, and a fine

Reflectance confocal microscopy: Diagnostic criteria of common benign and malignant neoplasms, dermoscopic and histopathologic correlates of key confocal criteria, and diagnostic algorithms.

Reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) is a high-resolution, noninvasive tool that is currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for obtaining and interpreting images of the skin and cutaneous neoplasms with the goal of decreasing unnecessary biopsy procedures in patients with benign lesions. The second article in this continuing medical education series focuses on identifying key criteria for the diagnosis of common skin cancers-melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. We contrast these findings with RCM features of common benign lesions-melanocytic nevi, sol

Poorly differentiated carcinoma arising in the setting of erythema ab igne.

Erythema ab igne (EAI) is a reticulated, erythematous, or hyperpigmented dermatosis that is caused by chronic exposure to infrared radiation. Chronic lesions of EAI have significant potential for malignant transformation. We report a case of poorly differentiated carcinoma arising within a patch of long-standing EAI on the lower extremity of a 92-year-old female. This case highlights the importance of recognizing EAI early and counseling patients to avoid further exposure to the offending infrared source to reduce the risk of malignant transformation. EAI has been associated with several diffe

Care of the skin at midlife: diagnosis of pigmented lesions.

Intrinsic skin changes with advancing years include dryness, decreasing elasticity, increasing skin fragility, and more prominent vasculature. Extrinsic skin aging, caused primarily by cigarette smoking and exposure to sunlight, includes mottled pigmentation and yellow discoloration, rough leathery textural changes, and wrinkling. Major premalignant and malignant neoplasms in photodamaged skin are actinic keratosis, basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Nonmalignant lesions include solar lentigines and seborrheic keratoses. The A, B, C, D criteria can assist in the evalu
