Case Report of Ogilvie's Syndrome Following Emergency Haemostatic Subtotal Abdominal Hysterectomy at University Teaching Hospital of Butare, Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Acute colonic pseudo-obstruction or Ogilvie's syndrome is a rare condition that usually develops due to a dysregulated autonomic … artum haemorrhage was due to both atony and posterior cervical tear. Two initial administrations of neostigmine 2 mg mixed with atropine 0.5 mg were unsuccessful, but an insertion of a flexible recto-sigmoid cannula allowed a slight decompression. A subsequent third dose of neostigmine 2 mg mixed with atropine 0.5 mg was followed with a remarkable flatus evac …

Membrane currents underlying the cholinergic slow excitatory post-synaptic potential in the rat sympathetic ganglion.

Non-nicotinic slow synaptic currents were recorded from voltage-clamped neurones in isolated rat superior cervical ganglia bathed in a solution containing d-tubocurarine and (usually) 1 microM-neostigmine. Three components of slow synaptic current could be detected following repetitive preganglionic stimulation: a net inward current resulting from inhibition of the voltage-dependent outward K+ current IM; a net outward current associated with a fall in membrane conductance when IM was deactivated by membrane hyperpolarization or inhibited with external Ba2+ or internal Cs+; and an occasional l…

Sugammadex for reversing neuromuscular blockade in infants and children.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: The primary objective of this review is to evaluate the benefits and harms of sugammadex compared to other neuromuscular blockade reversal agents (neostigmine and pyridostigmine) in infants and children undergoing surgical procedures. A secondary objective is to assess whether these outcomes differ by age group, comorbidities, co-medications, or type of neuromuscular blocking agent.

The neuromuscular blocking activity of aminodeoxykanamycin as compared with that of other aminoglycoside antibiotics.

Aminodeoxykanamycin (Kaneudomycin) as well as other members of the aminoglycoside antibiotics, has an action at the neuromuscular junction. Kanendomycin was found to be five times less potent than gentamycin, as far as their neuromuscular blocking action on the rat diaphragm is concerned. The neuromuscular blocking action on the rat diaphragm is concerned. The neuromuscular blockade produced by Kanendomycin is not reversed by neostigmine but only by calcium chloride.

Prussian Blue/Chitosan Micromotors with Intrinsic Enzyme-like Activity for (bio)-Sensing Assays.

Prussian Blue (PB)/chitosan enzyme mimetic tubular micromotors are used here for on-the-fly (bio)-sensing assays. The micromotors are easily … e explored in fast inhibition assays (20 min) for the colorimetric determination of the nerve agent neostigmine, with excellent analytical performance in terms of quantification limit (0.30 μM) and concentration linear range (up to 500 μM), without compromising efficient micromotor propulsion. The new concept illustrated holds considerable potential for a myr …

Decremental responses to repetitive nerve stimulation in x-linked bulbospinal muscular atrophy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: X-linked bulbospinal muscular atrophy (X-BSMA) is characterized by bulbar and spinal muscular weakness and fascicula … es. A decrement greater than 10% was considered abnormal. Additionally, a pharmacologic response to neostigmine was identified in three patients. RESULTS: A significant decrement was observed in 67% of patients, and was most common in the trapezius muscle (nine cases). The decrement of the trapezius muscle response ranged from 15.9% to 36.9%. The decrement w …

Cutaneous blood flow and sweat rate responses to exogenous administration of acetylcholine and methacholine.

The aim of this study was to evaluate cutaneous vasodilation and sweating responses to exogenous administration of acetylcholine (ACh) and m … other two with MCh. However, one of each of the ACh and MCh sites was also perfused with 10 microM neostigmine (an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor). Neostigmine at the ACh site induced a leftward shift (i.e., lower EC(50)) of the SR and CVC dose-response curves compared with the site treated with ACh alone, resulting in no difference in the EC(50) for SR and …

The effect of meptazinol on the guinea-pig sphincter of Oddi in-vitro.

Meptazinol causes a dose-dependent contraction of the guinea-pig sphincter of Oddi in-vitro. This was antagonized by atropine in concentrations which blocked the contractile response to acetylcholine but not that to KCl. Naloxone was unable to block the response of the tissue to meptazinol, and other opioid drugs had inconsistent effects. Although meptazinol has significant anticholinesterase activity on this preparation, comparison with neostigmine suggests that this is irrelevant to its contractile action.

Eliminating residual neuromuscular blockade: a literature review.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Although millions of patients receive neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) each year as part of an anesthetic, re … ce and complications associated with residual NMB, and discuss reversal of nondepolarizing NMB with neostigmine or sugammadex. Nondepolarizing NMBAs are commonly used as part of a general anesthetic. Understanding the pharmacology of the neuromuscular blocking and reversal agent, in combination with quantitative monitoring of depth of NMB is essential to avoi …

Adjunct Medications for Single-Injection Pediatric Regional Blocks: Implications for Peripheral Nerve Blocks.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Single-injection peripheral nerve blocks (PNBs) provide excellent perioperative analgesia in children but are limited by finite duration. Pediatric populations were excluded from the major adult adjunct reviews. This narrative review synthesizes the evidence for adjuncts added to local anesthetics for single-injection PNBs and caudal blocks in patients aged 0 to 18 years, including dexamethasone, dexmedetomidine, clonidine, conventional opioids, buprenorphine, magnesium sulfate, midazolam, ketamine, neostigmine, tramadol, nalbuphine, and epinephrine. RECENT FINDINGS: Across…

The rodent model of impaired gastric motility induced by allyl isothiocyanate, a pungent ingredient of wasabi, to evaluate therapeutic agents for functional dyspepsia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is thought to be mainly based on gastric motility dysfunction and chronic hypersensitivity, yet FD animal models h … urement of motility. Prokinetic agents including itopride (30, 100 mg/kg), mosapride (0.1-1 mg/kg), neostigmine (30 μg/kg), acotiamide (10-100 mg/kg), and daikenchuto (100-1000 mg/kg) were given 40 min before the measurement. AITC impaired gastric motility without mucosal damages, which reverted 24 h after AITC treatment. The decreased motility induced by AIT …

Neuromuscular pharmacology in rat neonates: development of responsiveness to prototypic blocking and reversal drugs.

The neonatal pharmacology of neuromuscular drugs was studied in vivo in newborn rats and in vitro in neonatal phrenic nerve-hemidiaphragm preparations. Drugs used to probe neuromuscular development in rat neonates were physostigmine, edrophonium, neostigmine, 4-aminopyridine, d-tubocurarine (dTc), and succinylcholine. The prejunctional actions of these drugs were monitored in relation to neonatal age by the appearance of stimulus-evoked repetitive discharge initiated by motor nerve endings and the occurrence and magnitude of the resulting enhancement of twitch tension. The occurrence and incid…

High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin in transient neonatal myasthenia gravis.

A preterm newborn had transient neonatal myasthenia gravis and was mechanically ventilated for 9 days. In addition to the usual supportive care, she was treated with neostigmine and underwent two exchange transfusions. High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin therapy (2 gm/kg) was used for the first time in transient neonatal myasthenia gravis to the best of our knowledge. The clinical and laboratory responses are presented.

Comparison of the efficacy of varespladib and coral snake antivenom against the activities of the Amazon coral snake (Micrurus spixii) venom.

The ability of varespladib (VPL), a phospholipase A2 (PLA2) inhibitor, to attenuate several activities of the Amazon coral snake (Micrurus spixii) venom was assessed. The neutralization by VPL was compared to that of coral snake antivenom and, in some cases, neostigmine. The venom showed anticoagulant activity in human plasma (assessed using in vitro thromboelastometry), and was myotoxic (based on the increase in serum creatine kinase activity) and lethal to mice, in addition to causing neuromuscular blockade in chick isolated biventer cervicis preparations. Antivenom fully protected against l…
