CASES: We present 3 patients who underwent ulnar nerve transposition and wrapping of the nerve with human amniotic membrane (HAM). All 3 patients subsequently required a reoperation for the original pathologic condition (not for ulnar nerve symptoms), necessitating the exploration and dissection of the transposed ulnar nerve. We demonstrate the lack of scar formation and ease of separation between nerve and surrounding tissue, as well as histology in one case taken from the perineural tissues (previous amniotic membrane), demonstrating no inflammatory cells or absence of scar tissue formation.

Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy and thyroid disease suggest locally invasive thyroid malignancy. In contrast, recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy caused by benign multinodular goiters or ectopic thyroid tissue accounts for only 1% of cases. This article describes an unusual case of recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy secondary to a benign ectopic retrosternal thyroid tissue mass. Recurrent laryngeal nerve palsy should be considered in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with progressive voice weakness and hoarseness.

Aging influences peripheral nerve regeneration. Nevertheless, most basic research of bioabsorbable nerve conduits including commercial products have been performed in very young animals. Results from these studies may not provide information about axonal regeneration in aged tissue, because young nerve tissue holds sufficient endogenous potential for axonal regeneration. The clinical target age for nerve conduit application is most likely going to increase with a rapidly growing elderly population. In the present study, we examined axonal regeneration after sciatic nerve defects in aged and yo…

Operative intervention for recalcitrant carpal tunnel syndrome often utilizes local vascularized tissue to provide coverage of the median nerve in an attempt to limit scarring or adherence of the nerve to its surrounding structures. Although the hypothenar fat pad is the most commonly cited source of vascularized tissue, alternative options do exist. We review the technique of utilizing a pedicled tenosynovial flap as the source of local vascularized tissue for coverage of the median nerve in cases of recalcitrant carpal tunnel syndrome.

Choristomas are rare lesions that typically involve peripheral nerves and are marked by the presence of histologically normal tissue for an organ or body part other than the site at which it is located. Reports of choristoma involving cranial nerves are extraordinarily rare. We report a case of an optic nerve choristoma arising in a 24-year-old woman. The lesion was marked by a disordered admixture of smooth muscle tissue and optic nerve tissue. The literature on optic nerve choristoma is reviewed.

BACKGROUND: Lymphedema in breast cancer survivors is a very common condition which progressively may lead to entrapment neuropathy. In lymphedema there is accumulation of fluid due to removal of lymph nodes which causes stretching of nerve fibres within the skin, compression on top of the nerve bundle leading to nerve entrapment. This will increase the neural mechanosensitivity and functional impairment of shoulder as a protective neural response to movement or traction.
METHODS: This study was carried out by assessing the total 72 breast cancer survivor women, with lymphedema. Out of 72, 28

A rhesus monkey with a congenital coloboma of the optic nerve head associated with serous macular detachment underwent intravenous (IV), intrathecal, and retrobulbar fluorescein angiography. No fluorescein leaked beneath the serous detachment after IV or intrathecal injection, although the retrobulbar injection caused a bolus to extravasate from the margin of the optic nerve coloboma, drifting toward the macular region temporally. Histopathologically, glial tissue replaced optic nerve axonal bundles in the temporal coloboma. The intermediary tissue of Kuhnt was disrupted, and fluid from the re

It is now widely accepted that injured nerves, like any other injured tissue, need assistance from their extracellular milieu in order to heal. We compared the postinjury activities of thrombin and gelatinases, two types of proteolytic activities known to be critically involved in tissue healing, in nonregenerative (rat optic nerve) and regenerative (fish optic nerve and rat sciatic nerve) neural tissue. Unlike gelatinases, whose induction pattern was comparable in all three nerves, thrombin-like activity differed clearly between regenerating and nonregenerating nervous systems. Postinjury lev

Our previous studies revealed that purified extracts (submicrosomal fractions) obtained from peripheral nerves predegenerated for 7-, 28-, and 35-days facilitated neurite outgrowth from the injured hippocampus. It is recently known that totally transected peripheral nerve exhibits biphasic neurite-promoting activity. The early phase lasts 7 days. The aim of the present study was to find whether extracts obtained from short-time predegenerated (1-6 days) peripheral nerves exert any neurotrophic effect and when this influence is maximal. Experiments were carried out on adult male Wistar rats. Sc

In maxillofacial surgery, accessing the mandibular condyle is a contested topic. Whilst retro-auricular approaches are considered to be protective of the facial nerve, the distance from dissection to nerve has not been verified. Dissection of 29 cadaveric head specimens was carried out using a retro-auricular approach. Three measurements were made: (a) from nerve to the inferior edge of the cartilaginous external acoustic meatus, (b) thickness of tissue laterally between dissection and nerve, and (c) thickness of tissue vertically between inferior limit of dissection and nerve. Intra-class cor

A 26-year-old female developed a unilateral hypoglossal nerve palsy in association with tuberculosis of the first cervical vertebra. The extensive soft tissue and bony abnormalities were demonstrated only by computerized axial tomography. Involvement of the hypoglossal nerve within the skull by tuberculous granulation tissue was the most likely mechanism for the nerve palsy.

Apolipoprotein E (apo E) is thought to mediate the reutilization of myelin cholesterol for nerve regeneration. Prior research suggests that apo E is not essential for nerve regeneration following a nerve crush injury. This study was conducted to determine if apo E is essential for nerve regeneration after nerve transection and interposition nerve autograft. Nerve regeneration of transgenic apo E-deficient mice was compared with control mice after a sciatic nerve neurolysis and repair and interposition autograft. Histomorphometric assessment and histology were performed on distal nerve segments

Sympathetic nerves regulate nearly all human organs. Their peripheral nerves are present in tumor tissue. Activation of the sympathetic nervous system promotes malignant transformation in several cancers. This study aimed to quantify sympathetic nerve density (SND) in gastric cancer and investigate the relationship between SND and nerve growth factor (NGF) in human clinical samples using immunohistochemistry. Patients with high SND in tumor tissue had significantly shorter survival. High NGF expression in tumor tissue was significantly associated with increased SND and poorer prognosis. In vit

Lipofibromatous hamartoma (LFH) is a rare benign tumor affecting the peripheral nerves, particularly the median nerve. It is characterized by fatty tissue infiltrating the nerve. We report the case of a patient with LFH of the median nerve, recurrent branch and ulnar proper palmar digital nerve of the thumb associated with macrodactyly. It was responsible for hypoesthesia of the thumb's hemi-pulp and secondary carpal tunnel syndrome confirmed by electroneuromyography (ENMG). Diagnosis was suspected based on the MRI findings. The patient underwent surgical treatment consisting of open carpal tu

Schwannomas and neurofibromas are rare benign tumors originating from the peripheral nerve sheath. Tumors in neurofibromatosis are mostly neurofibromas and often appear in the soft tissue of peripheral nerves. In this report, a patient presented with two large adjacent soft tissue tumors in the right wrist and distal forearm which originated from a common nerve. A schwannoma had formed beside a neurofibroma from the ulnar nerve and induced numbness and paresthesia in the little and ring fingers. Although the patient had café au lait spots on the skin, neurofibromatosis was not suspected due to

Facial nerve function may be hampered by iatrogenic damage during head and neck laser surgery procedures. Optical techniques can serve as a basis for feedback-controlled tissue-specific laser surgery on the jaw bone and the parotid gland. In order to preserve nerve tissue during laser surgery, the alteration of optical tissue properties through laser-tissue interactions have to be taken into account. It was the aim of this study to evaluate the viability of optical tissue differentiation through diffuse reflectance spectroscopy after exposure to laser light as a basis for a feedback system for…

BACKGROUND: Optical diffuse reflectance can remotely differentiate various bio tissues. To implement this technique in an optical feedback system to guide laser surgery in a tissue-specific way, the alteration of optical tissue properties by laser ablation has to be taken into account. It was the aim of this study to evaluate the general feasibility of optical soft tissue differentiation by diffuse reflectance spectroscopy under the influence of laser ablation, comparing the tissue differentiation results before and after laser intervention.
METHODS: A total of 70 ex vivo tissue samples (5 ti

BACKGROUND: We introduce a novel operative technique to dissect lymph nodes adjacent to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, referred to as the "native tissue preservation" technique. Using this technique, there was no damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, which is maintained in its anatomical position.
METHODS: From September 2016 to December 2018, minimally invasive esophagectomy was performed in the left lateral decubitus position in 87 patients with esophageal cancer. The native tissue preservation technique for lymphadenectomy around the recurrent laryngeal nerve was used, and all patients
