Zero-Padding and Spatial Augmentation-Based Gas Sensor Node Optimization Approach in Resource-Constrained 6G-IoT Paradigm.

Ultra-low-power is a key performance indicator in 6G-IoT ecosystems. Sensor nodes in this eco-system are also capable of running light-weight artificial intelligence (AI) models. In this work, we have achieved high performance in a gas sensor system using Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) with a smaller number of gas sensor elements. We have identified redundant gas sensor elements in a gas sensor array and removed them to reduce the power consumption without significant deviation in the node's performance. The inevitable variation in the performance due to removing redundant sensor elements

Color for object recognition: Hue and chroma sensitivity in the deep features of convolutional neural networks.

In this work, we examined the color tuning of units in the hidden layers of AlexNet, VGG-16 and VGG-19 convolutional neural networks and their relevance for the successful recognition of an object. We first selected the patches for which the units are maximally responsive among the 1.2 M images of the ImageNet training dataset. We segmented these patches using a k-means clustering algorithm on their chromatic distribution. Then we independently varied the color of these segments, both in hue and chroma, to measure the unit's chromatic tuning. The models exhibited properties at times similar or

Towards Interpretable Deep Learning: A Feature Selection Framework for Prognostics and Health Management Using Deep Neural Networks.

In the last five years, the inclusion of Deep Learning algorithms in prognostics and health management (PHM) has led to a performance increase in diagnostics, prognostics, and anomaly detection. However, the lack of interpretability of these models results in resistance towards their deployment. Deep Learning-based models fall within the accuracy/interpretability tradeoff, which means that their complexity leads to high performance levels but lacks interpretability. This work aims at addressing this tradeoff by proposing a technique for feature selection embedded in deep neural networks that u

A novel based-performance degradation indicator RUL prediction model and its application in rolling bearing.

Aiming at the problem of poor prediction performance of rolling bearing remaining useful life (RUL) with single performance degradation indicator, a novel based-performance degradation indicator RUL prediction model is established. Firstly, the vibration signal of rolling bearing is decomposed into some intrinsic scale components (ISCs) by piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial-local characteristic-scale decomposition (PCHIP-LCD), and the effective ISCs are selected to reconstruct signals based on kurtosis-correlation coefficient (K-C) criteria. Secondly, the multi-dimensional degrad

Learn to synchronize, synchronize to learn.

In recent years, the artificial intelligence community has seen a continuous interest in research aimed at investigating dynamical aspects of both training procedures and machine learning models. Of particular interest among recurrent neural networks, we have the Reservoir Computing (RC) paradigm characterized by conceptual simplicity and a fast training scheme. Yet, the guiding principles under which RC operates are only partially understood. In this work, we analyze the role played by Generalized Synchronization (GS) when training a RC to solve a generic task. In particular, we show how GS a

Development of a single retention time prediction model integrating multiple liquid chromatography systems: Application to new psychoactive substances.

Database-driven suspect screening has proven to be a useful tool to detect new psychoactive substances (NPS) outside the scope of targeted screening; however, the lack of retention times specific to a liquid chromatography (LC) system can result in a large number of false positives. A singular stream-lined, quantitative structure-retention relationship (QSRR)-based retention time prediction model integrating multiple LC systems with different elution conditions is presented using retention time data (n = 1281) from the online crowd-sourced database, HighResNPS. Modelling was performed using an

Classification of analyzable metaphase images using transfer learning and fine tuning.

Chromosomes are bodies that contain human genetic information. Chromosomal disorders can cause structural and functional disorders in individuals. Detecting the metaphase stages of the cells accurately is a crucial step to detect possible defects in chromosomes. Thus, it is vital at this stage to identify the identical chromosome of each chromosome, to perform the pairing process, and to identify problems arising from this process. In this study, it was investigated whether the analyzable metaphase images can be analyzed by using the transfer learning and fine tuning approaches of deep learnin

Diagnosis of Leukaemia in Blood Slides Based on a Fine-Tuned and Highly Generalisable Deep Learning Model.

Leukaemia is a dysfunction that affects the production of white blood cells in the bone marrow. Young cells are abnormally produced, replacing normal blood cells. Consequently, the person suffers problems in transporting oxygen and in fighting infections. This article proposes a convolutional neural network (CNN) named LeukNet that was inspired on convolutional blocks of VGG-16, but with smaller dense layers. To define the LeukNet parameters, we evaluated different CNNs models and fine-tuning methods using 18 image datasets, with different resolution, contrast, colour and texture characteristi

Expert-level automated malaria diagnosis on routine blood films with deep neural networks.

Over 200 million malaria cases globally lead to half a million deaths annually. Accurate malaria diagnosis remains a challenge. Automated imaging processing approaches to analyze Thick Blood Films (TBF) could provide scalable solutions, for urban healthcare providers in the holoendemic malaria sub-Saharan region. Although several approaches have been attempted to identify malaria parasites in TBF, none have achieved negative and positive predictive performance suitable for clinical use in the west sub-Saharan region. While malaria parasite object detection remains an intermediary step in achie

Deep-gKnock: Nonlinear group-feature selection with deep neural networks.

Feature selection is central to contemporary high-dimensional data analysis. Group structure among features arises naturally in various scientific problems. Many methods have been proposed to incorporate the group structure information into feature selection. However, these methods are normally restricted to a linear regression setting. To relax the linear constraint, we design a new Deep Neural Network (DNN) architecture and integrating it with the recently proposed knockoff technique to perform nonlinear group-feature selection with controlled group-wise False Discovery Rate (gFDR). Full-Spectrum Prediction of Peptides Tandem Mass Spectra using Deep Neural Network.

The ability to predict tandem mass (MS/MS) spectra from peptide sequences can significantly enhance our understanding of the peptide fragmentation process and could improve peptide identification in proteomics. However, current approaches for predicting high-energy collisional dissociation (HCD) spectra are limited to predict the intensities of expected ion types, that is, the a/b/c/x/y/z ions and their neutral loss derivatives (referred to as backbone ions). In practice, backbone ions only account for <70% of total ion intensities in HCD spectra, indicating many intense ions are ignored by cu

Evaluating the use of neural networks and acoustic measurements to identify laryngeal pathologies.

Nineteen acoustical measurements were related to 23 larynx conditions by artificial neural networks (ANNs) and principal component analysis. An exhaustive analysis (combining all possible sets of acoustical measurements as ANN inputs) showed a performance of 99.4% for accuracy and 90.3% for sensitivity and specificity in classifying voice signals into normal and non-normal larynx conditions. In the case of individual larynx condition identification, the general sensitivity drop significantly (6.4%), although some conditions were better identified (including "vocal nodules" and "cysts") then ot

Chewing detection from an in-ear microphone using convolutional neural networks.

Detecting chewing sounds from a microphone placed inside the outer ear for eating behaviour monitoring still remains a challenging task. This is mainly due the difficulty in discriminating non-chewing sounds (e.g. speech or sounds caused by walking) from chews, as well as due to to the high variability of the chewing sounds of different food types. Most approaches rely on detecting distictive structures on the sound wave, or on extracting a set of features and using a classifier to detect chews. In this work, we propose to use feature-learning in the time domain with 1-dimensional convolutiona

[Replication of a computer model of auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia].

INTRODUCTION: Abnormal synaptic pruning has been proposed by some authors as a theory to explain schizophrenia. It has been studied in different ways, some of which are computerized models. METHODS: A PC computer with MATLAB version 5.3 and Neural Networks Toolbox programs were used. To reproduce the model we used Elman's network for neuronal unit and McGlashan and Hoffman's network. RESULTS: The corrected percentage of detection improved as synapses were prunned. It increased from 68% to 91 %, reaching the highest detection level when 60% of the synapses were eliminated. Detection capacity

Toward a cerebello-thalamo-cortical computational model of spinocerebellar ataxia.

Computational neural network modelling is an emerging approach for optimization of drug treatment of neurological disorders and fine-tuning of rehabilitation strategies. In the current study, we constructed a cerebello-thalamo-cortical computational neural network model to simulate a mouse model of cerebellar ataxia (pcd5J mice) by manipulating cerebellar bursts through reduction of GABAergic inhibitory input. Cerebellar output neurons were projected to the thalamus and bidirectionally connected with the cortical network. Our results showed that reduction of inhibitory input in the cerebellum

Test-time optimization for domain adaptive open vocabulary segmentation.

We present Seg-TTO, a novel framework for zero-shot, open-vocabulary semantic segmentation (OVSS), designed to excel in specialized domain tasks. While current open-vocabulary approaches show impressive performance on standard segmentation benchmarks under zero-shot settings, they fall short of supervised counterparts on highly domain-specific datasets. We focus on segmentation-specific test-time optimization to address this gap. Segmentation requires an understanding of multiple concepts within a single image while retaining the locality and spatial structure of representations. We propose a

Physics-informed neural networks for predicting laser-tissue interaction in maxillofacial reconstruction surgery.

This study employs Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to simulate the thermal dynamics of biological tissue under laser irradiation by embedding the heat transfer and radiative transport equations into the training process. The PINN architecture, comprising three hidden layers with 50 neurons each and Tanh activation, accurately predicts temperature distributions, achieving close agreement with the analytical solutions (final MSE [Formula: see text]). The thermal penetration depths, calculated under uniform conditions of P = 5 W and beam diameter = 1 mm, were CO[Formula: see text] (0.11

Sonar-neus:voxel-based efficient neural implicit surface reconstruction for forward-looking sonar.

Dense 3D reconstruction using forward-looking sonar (FLS) is essential for ocean exploration. Recent advancements in FLS-based 3D reconstruction using neural radiance fields have emerged, demonstrating promising results. However, their excessively slow reconstruction speed significantly impacts their application in real-world scenarios, primarily due to two reasons: (1) the reliance on MLPs for scene representation leads to slow training, often requiring several hours for reconstruction; and (2) the uniform sampling strategy along the elevation arc is inefficient, greatly hindering both traini

An algorithmic system for arabic fake news detection using neural networks and transformer embeddings with class weighting.

Modern communication technologies have increased the speed of news dissemination. Information can now reach wide audiences almost instantly. At the same time, these technologies can reduce traditional verification mechanisms, contributing to the accelerated spread of false information and posing potential societal and political challenges. While research on fake news detection has increased, Arabic remains under-explored due to limited datasets and the language’s morphological and semantic complexity. We compiled a multi-source Arabic news dataset consisting of 7,474 articles. The dataset was

Morphological saliency prior-guided band-aware multi-modal disease diagnostic fusion network for vibrational spectroscopy.

Multimodal vibrational spectroscopy provides a powerful biochemical probe for non-invasive clinical diagnosis. However, when mapping high-dimensional spectral features, existing deep neural networks are highly susceptible to overfitting high-variance noise, including baseline drift and amorphous broadband signals. Because underlying physicochemical constraints are rarely incorporated into representation learning, such diagnostically driven paradigms often lack prior-based interpretability, thereby limiting their reliability in complex medical decision-making. Here, we propose a Morphological S
