[Mumps meningitis: a case mix in a Neurology Department].

INTRODUCTION: Parotiditis is a viral infection that produces a non-suppurative inflammation of the parotid glands, although it may affect other salivary glands, the testicles, meninges and the pancreas. Clinical meningitis appears in 1-10% of cases, normally between the 4th and the 10th day after infection of the parotid glands. In this study, we analyse the clinical and analytic characteristics of the patients admitted to our Neurology Department over the last 12 years. CASE REPORTS: A retrospective study was conducted by analysing the hospital discharge reports. The eligibility criterion wa…

The neurology of syntax: language use without Broca's area.

A new view of the functional role of the left anterior cortex in language use is proposed. The experimental record indicates that most human linguistic abilities are not localized in this region. In particular, most of syntax (long thought to be there) is not located in Broca's area and its vicinity (operculum, insula, and subjacent white matter). This cerebral region, implicated in Broca's aphasia, does have a role in syntactic processing, but a highly specific one: It is the neural home to receptive mechanisms involved in the computation of the relation between transformationally moved phras

[Plasmapheresis in neurology. Critical analysis of indications and protocols].

Therapeutic plasmapheresis (plasma exchange) in neurology is a matter of discussion. We review the main articles on clinical trials, both controlled and uncontrolled, trying to establish the efficacy and safety of the procedure. Humoral aspects involved in the genesis of the disorder play an important role for its indication in the present time. In myasthenia gravis indications for plasmapheresis are established: in the preparation for thymectomy, in patients with respiratory insufficiency and requiring respiratory prosthesis, after long immunosuppression therapy with rebound effect, when all …

[Routine screening for syphilis in neurology is not useful].

In a retrospective study the results of the screening for syphilis in one of the neurological wards of the Academic Medical Centre in Amsterdam were analysed. The Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test (VDRL) and the Treponema Pallidum Haemagglutination Assay (TPHA) in serum were used for screening. The data for analysis were obtained via the hospital computer data base and via the medical files of the department of neurology. During the 5-year study period (1986-1990) 2378 adult patients were admitted and 1247 (52.4%) of them were screened. In seven (0.56%) patients both tests were positiv…

Neurology training and research in the COVID-19 pandemic: a survey of the Resident and Research Fellow Section of the European Academy of Neurology.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The COVID-19 (SARS-CoV-2) outbreak has disrupted residency programmes due to university and hospitals' priorities to face this emergency at all cost. Most research projects and clinical trials were temporarily stopped or postponed. The Resident and Research Fellow Section (RRFS) of the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) has decided to assess the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on neurology training. METHODS: All EAN RRFS members were invited to fill out an online questionnaire of 40 items concerning their clinical involvement during the COVID-19 emergency, and the imp…

Survey of the Availability of Neurology Services on Hawai'i Island.

Patients in rural communities face significant health disparities including disparities in many subspecialties of medicine. Hawai'i Island is a largely rural island and is the second most populous island in the state of Hawai'i. Of the identified physician shortages across the state, neurology ranks among the highest on Hawai'i Island. Given this shortage, this study sought to assess Hawai'i Island primary care physicians' perceptions and experiences with accessing and delivering neurological care. Physicians practicing on Hawai'i Island were sent an anonymous online survey between April 2025 …

Curriculum Innovation: Virtual Reality for Neuroanatomy Education Among Neurology Residents.

INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT: Advanced neuroanatomy knowledge is essential for clinical reasoning in neurology, yet residency training offers limited time to reinforce concepts. This contributes to persistent gaps in topics frequently tested on the Residency In-service Training Examination (RITE). This study evaluated the feasibility and educational impact of a virtual reality (VR) neuroanatomy curriculum intended to enable residents to (1) identify and spatially integrate arterial, venous, and ventricular structures; (2) improve performance on assessments targeting commonly missed RITE …

Tsunamis hiding in plain sight: spreading depression in clinical neurology.

Spreading depression is a neurophysiological phenomenon that is observed in the central nervous system of many species, from insects to humans. In essence, spreading depression is a slowly propagating wave of mass depolarization (that is, spreading depolarization), aptly termed a 'brain tsunami', which successively engulfs contiguous brain regions, causing transient neuronal hyperexcitability at its leading edge, followed by complete but reversible neuronal silence lasting minutes. This wave cannot be detected in routine scalp EEG recordings, which contributes to its under-recognized status as

Mark Hallett: scientist and humanitarian in modern movement disorder neurology.

Mark Hallett, MD (1943-2025) was a highly influential neurologist in the modern history of movement disorders. Over several decades, his work transformed the field from a predominantly descriptive clinical specialty into a neuroscientific discipline. Through pioneering investigations in neurophysiology, cortical excitability, dystonia, tremors, myoclonus, functional movement disorders, and transcranial magnetic stimulation, Hallett helped establish conceptual frameworks that continue to shape contemporary research and clinical practice. Beyond his scientific contributions, he is recognized as

Non-invasive brain stimulation: current and future applications in neurology.

Device-based non-invasive brain stimulation (NIBS) techniques show promise for the treatment of neurological and psychiatric disorders, although inconsistencies in protocol designs and study findings can make the field difficult to navigate. In this Review, we discuss applications of NIBS for enhancing cognitive and motor function in people with various neurological diseases that are characterized by disruption of large-scale brain networks, including neurodegenerative diseases and brain lesion disorders such as stroke and traumatic brain injury. In particular, we focus on repetitive transcran
