Arthrogenic muscle inhibition (AMI), neurophysiological suppression of voluntary quadriceps activation triggered by joint effusion and inflammation, is consistently initiated within hours of any form of knee surgery. If not actively counteracted during the first two postoperative weeks, AMI may drive a cascade of neuromuscular, morphological, and biomechanical deficits that can persist for years, substantially increasing the risk of post-traumatic osteoarthritis, reinjury, and long-term functional disability. Emerging evidence indicates that preoperative patient-related factors, including base

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a genetic neuromuscular disorder that results from a low level of survival motor neuron (SMN) protein. Onasemnogene abeparvovec is an approved genetic therapy that consists of a viral vector that carries DNA encoding the SMN protein. In this single-center, observational study, we used onasemnogene abeparvovec in pediatric patients with SMA in Kazakhstan. In 2021, we collected data from 10 patients under 2 years of age with SMA types 1 and 2 who received onasemnogene abeparvovec therapy. Post-treatment follow-up was conducted remotely. We analyzed outcomes of th

BACKGROUND: Nonintubated patients receiving sevoflurane have slower protective airway reflex recovery after anesthesia compared with patients receiving desflurane. We asked whether this difference would remain significant among intubated patients receiving rocuronium or whether the impact of variable neuromuscular recovery would predominate and thus minimize differences between anesthetics.
METHODS: After obtaining written informed consent, patients were randomly assigned to receive sevoflurane (n = 41) or desflurane (n = 40), with neuromuscular monitoring by quantitative train-of-four (TOF) …

Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring is currently used to prevent intraoperative spinal cord and nerve injuries during neonatal and infant surgeries. However, its use is associated with some issues in these young children. The developing nervous system of infants and neonates requires higher stimulation voltage than adults to ensure adequate signals, thereby necessitating reduced anesthesia dose to avoid suppressing motor and somatosensory-evoked potentials. Excessive dose reduction, however, increases the risk of unexpected body movement when used without neuromuscular blocking drugs.

PURPOSE: Intraoperative monitoring can be used to prevent postoperative urinary dysfunction due to surgical manipulation. However, preoperative neurological dysfunction and young age make monitoring challenging. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the efficacy of combining two monitoring methods, the bulbocavernosus reflex (BCR) and motor-evoked potential from the external anal sphincter (EAS-MEP) in assessing urinary function in the same pediatric patients during untethering surgery.
METHODS: We retrospectively identified pediatric patients (aged < 6 years) who underwent BCR and EAS-MEP m

Wearable bioelectronics are essential for continuous health monitoring and rehabilitation, yet existing soft electrodes often lose signal fidelity during prolonged dynamic wear because surface-confined ion-electron transduction offers limited electrochemically addressable volume and charge-buffering capacity. Here, we report a mixed ionic-electronic transduction layer (PGWL) that addresses these limitations through volumetric charge compensation. By maintaining ionic accessibility and electronic continuity within the mixed-conducting network, PGWL supports a stable bulk-engaged ion-electron tr

PURPOSE: Advances in neuromuscular monitoring and reversal agents have facilitated the widespread clinical adoption of deep neuromuscular blockade (dNMB). Nevertheless, whether dNMB improves postoperative recovery quality compared with moderate neuromuscular blockade (mNMB) remains unclear.
METHODS: We systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library up to January 31, 2026. Eligible studies were randomized controlled trials (RCTs) enrolling adult surgical patients, comparing dNMB versus mNMB, and reporting postoperative recovery quality measured by the Quality of Recovery-40 (…

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with early hip-related pain may exhibit subtle compensatory neuromuscular alterations even when overall movement performance appears largely preserved, making these changes difficult to detect through routine observation. Whether modulation of stance width during a weight-bearing task can provoke and reveal these underlying control differences remains unclear.
METHODS: Participants with early hip-related pain and asymptomatic controls performed standardized squats under three stance-width conditions. Bilateral surface electromyography signals were recorded from the l

Over the last decade, ultrasonography has taken on an increasingly important role in the daily management of critically patients and has recently been proposed as a means of measuring muscle volume and architecture. This study had two main aims: to monitor for the onset of muscle atrophy in mechanically ventilated pediatric patients during stays in a pediatric intensive care unit based on quadriceps femoris muscle thickness measurements and to study whether demographic and clinical variables have an impact on muscle loss in critically children. The study followed a prospective, observational,

Monitoring muscle atrophy in patients undergoing anterolateral cruciate ligament reconstruction is pivotal for optimizing postoperative recovery. Conventionally, the uninjured contralateral limb serves as the control. However, its relevance in patients with prolonged physical activity hiatus due to knee instability remains uncertain. Our objectives were to compare limbs within a control group by assessing combined force measurements, cross-sectional areas (CSAs), and neuromuscular activation. In addition, we compared the contralateral limb of the surgery group preoperatively to the control gro

BACKGROUND: Stroke affects over 1 million people in Europe and 25,000 in Sweden annually, with high mortality and disability rates. Dysphagia, a common post-stroke issue, occurs in over 50% of patients in the acute phase. Evidence-based studies are lacking on rehabilitative interventions to improve post-stroke dysphagia. Current management focuses on compensatory strategies, but oral neuromuscular training shows promising results. Challenges to rehabilitation programs include poor adherence and the need for effective monitoring technologies. The primary objective of the current trial is to inv

BACKGROUND: Sugammadex reverses the neuromuscular blockade induced by rocuronium and vecuronium and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in patients aged over 2 years. There is, however, a paucity of data regarding its dosing profile in infants and children younger than 2 years.
AIMS: The aim of this study was to assess the risk of recurarization, or re-paralysis, in children under 2 years of age to increase awareness on the importance of appropriate neuromuscular blocked monitoring and reversal.
METHODS: All patients aged ≤24 months who underwent an operative procedu

The neurological complications of Epstein-Barr virus infection include viral meningitis, encephalitis and neuromuscular complications. The introduction of cerebrospinal fluid polymerase chain reaction for Epstein-Barr virus DNA has improved diagnosis of these conditions and of primary central nervous system lymphoma in acquired immune deficiency syndrome, and has enabled cerebrospinal fluid monitoring of therapy. Prognosis remains good for most Epstein-Barr virus-related neurological complications; for primary central nervous system lymphoma in acquired immune deficiency syndrome the prognosis

The diagnosis of periodic paralysis (PP) can be aided by demonstrating a decrease in compound motor action potential (CMAP) amplitude after several minutes of exercise. We report a case of secondary hypokalemic PP due to thyrotoxicosis in which the decrease in the CMAP amplitude after exercise dramatically improved after treatment, when a euthyroid state was achieved. The exercise test is a useful electrophysiologic means of monitoring the neuromuscular status of patients with thyrotoxic periodic paralysis prior to, and after treatment of the thyrotoxicosis.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Although most acute enteric infections in humans resolve, some herald the onset of chronic symptomatology and persistent gastrointestinal dysfunction--so-called postinfectious irritable bowel syndrome. This entity is poorly understood, and there are no animal models for testing hypotheses. The aim of this study was to investigate changes in intestinal neuromuscular function during and after recovery from acute intestinal inflammation due to primary Trichinella spiralis infections in NIH Swiss mice.
METHODS: Morphometric scores and myeloperoxidase activity were used to monit

The intraoperative variability of somatosensory cortical evoked potentials (SCEPs) has been measured for 320 consecutive spinal surgeries and found to be a function of patient diagnosis, neuromuscular status, age, and procedural factors. In many cases, it is likely that this variability severely limits the reliability and usefulness of spinal cord monitoring in detecting early cord compromise. Patients with idiopathic scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, and pseudarthrosis have the smallest spontaneous variability and strongest amplitudes, while those with congenital, paralytic scoliosis, stenosis, o
