Glucose Transport and Utilization in the Hippocampus: From Neurophysiology to Diabetes-Related Development of Dementia.

The association of diabetes with cognitive dysfunction has at least 60 years of history, which started with the observation that children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), who had recurrent episodes of hypoglycemia and consequently low glucose supply to the brain, showed a deficit of cognitive capacity. Later, the growing incidence of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D) and dementia in aged populations revealed their high association, in which a reduced neuronal glucose supply has also been considered as a key mechanism, despite hyperglycemia. Here, we discuss the role of glucose in neuronal fun

Distinct neurophysiology during nonword repetition in logopenic and non-fluent variants of primary progressive aphasia.

Overlapping clinical presentations in primary progressive aphasia (PPA) variants present challenges for diagnosis and understanding pathophysiology, particularly in the early stages of the disease when behavioral (speech) symptoms are not clearly evident. Divergent atrophy patterns (temporoparietal degeneration in logopenic variant lvPPA, frontal degeneration in nonfluent variant nfvPPA) can partially account for differential speech production errors in the two groups in the later stages of the disease. While the existing dogma states that neurodegeneration is the root cause of compromised beh

Neurophysiology of epidurally evoked spinal cord reflexes in clinically motor-complete posttraumatic spinal cord injury.

Increased use of epidural Spinal Cord Stimulation (eSCS) for the rehabilitation of spinal cord injury (SCI) has highlighted the need for a greater understanding of the properties of reflex circuits in the isolated spinal cord, particularly in response to repetitive stimulation. Here, we investigate the frequency-dependence of modulation of short- and long-latency EMG responses of lower limb muscles in patients with SCI at rest. Single stimuli could evoke short-latency responses as well as long-latency (likely polysynaptic) responses. The short-latency component was enhanced at low frequencies

The neurophysiology of hyperarousal in restless legs syndrome: Hints for a role of glutamate/GABA.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sensory-motor circadian disorder, whose basic components include urge to move the legs, unpleasant sensory experience, and periodic leg movements during sleep, all associated with an enhancement of the individual's arousal state. Brain iron deficiency (BID) is considered to be a key initial pathobiological factor, based on alterations of iron acquisition by the brain, also moderated by genetic factors. In addition to the well-known dopaminergic involvement in RLS, previous studies pointed out that BID brings also a hyperglutamatergic state that influenc

Translational neurophysiology in sheep: measuring sleep and neurological dysfunction in CLN5 Batten disease affected sheep.

Creating valid mouse models of slowly progressing human neurological diseases is challenging, not least because the short lifespan of rodents confounds realistic modelling of disease time course. With their large brains and long lives, sheep offer significant advantages for translational studies of human disease. Here we used normal and CLN5 Batten disease affected sheep to demonstrate the use of the species for studying neurological function in a model of human disease. We show that electroencephalography can be used in sheep, and that longitudinal recordings spanning many months are possible

Early neurophysiology and MRI in predicting neurological outcome at 9-10 years after birth asphyxia.

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether early somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) predict long-term neurodevelopmental outcome in normothermic, full-term infants with mild to moderate neonatal encephalopathy (NE), and to compare their predictive value to already available amplitude integrated EEG (aEEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). METHODS: Fifty-six infants with post-asphyxia NE were prospectively recruited, and their SEP, aEEG and MRI data were acquired during the first five days. Follow-up continued to 9-10 years for assessment of neuromotor and neurocognitive development. We analysed SEP

[The importance of neurophysiology and computerized tomography for diagnosis of cerebellar ataxia with late onset].

Twenty patients diagnosed as suffering from autosomal dominant or idiopathic late onset cerebellar ataxia were investigated clinically, by means of neurophysiological tests (blink reflex, BAEP, SEP, MEP, VEP) and CT scan. Twelve patients presented with a pure cerebellar ataxia (CA) after a disease duration of at least five years (mean disease duration ten years). Eight patients presented with additional non-cerebellar signs of involvement; hence the disease was classified as olivo-ponto-cerebellar atrophy (OPCA). Eight of the twelve patients with CA already exhibited pathological results in at

Morphology and neurophysiology of focal axonal injury experimentally induced in the guinea pig optic nerve.

A new model of focal axonal injury was reproduced by rapid and controlled elongation (uniaxial stretch) of the guinea pig optic nerve. Light microscopy study of optic nerve specimens after horseradish peroxidase injection into the vitreous of the animal's eye showed that axonal lesions were identical to those seen in human and primate post-traumatic diffuse axonal injury (DAI). The lesions were characterized by the formation of terminal clubs in severed axons and focal axonal enlargements in those axons that were lesioned-in-continuity. Visual-evoked potentials upon flash stimulation were reco

Respiratory modulation of neurophysiology and symptoms in athletes with sports-related concussion: a randomized crossover trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the effects of two breathing interventions on athletes with persistent post-concussive symptoms. Resonance breathing (RB) is a slow breathing technique at an individual's resonance frequency. Pelvic floor resonance breathing (PRB) combines diaphragmatic breathing with pelvic floor muscle activation. METHODS: A randomized crossover trial was conducted using a 3-1-3 week design. Two intervention phases were separated by a 1-week washout period. Twenty-six male rugby athletes with persistent post-concussive symptoms were included. Participants were assigned to dif

Characterizing brain dynamics during ketamine-induced dissociation and subsequent interactions with propofol using human intracranial neurophysiology.

Ketamine produces antidepressant effects in patients with treatment-resistant depression, but its usefulness is limited by its psychotropic side effects. Ketamine is thought to act via NMDA receptors and HCN1 channels to produce brain oscillations that are related to these effects. Using human intracranial recordings, we found that ketamine produces gamma oscillations in prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, structures previously implicated in ketamine's antidepressant effects, and a 3 Hz oscillation in posteromedial cortex, previously proposed as a mechanism for its dissociative effects. We anal

Normal autonomic neurophysiology of postural orthostatic tachycardia and recommended physiological assessments in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome.

The current surge of interest in postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome commonly known as POTS requires good knowledge of the very complex physiology involved, but this is currently lacking. The often overlooked normal physiology of orthostasis is reviewed including the definition of normal postural orthostatic tachycardia. An illustrated functional anatomy that embeds orthostatic tachycardia within the learned and skilful motor functions in the human population is presented. The four physiological phases of orthostasis and the role of tachycardia are described in a laboratory-controlled an

parkin-induced defects in neurophysiology and locomotion are generated by metabolic dysfunction and not oxidative stress.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by movement disorders, including bradykinesia. Analysis of inherited, juvenile PD, identified several genes linked via a common pathway to mitochondrial dysfunction. In this study, we demonstrate that the larva of the Drosophila parkin mutant faithfully models the locomotory and metabolic defects of PD and is an excellent system for investigating their inter-relationship. parkin larvae displayed a marked bradykinesia that was caused by a reduction in both the frequency of peristalsis and speed of muscle contractions. Rescue experiments confirmed that t

PET translates neurophysiology into images: A review to stimulate a network between neuroimaging and basic research.

In the last decades there has been a progressive advance in the development of techniques able to explore in humans neurophysiologic and neurochemical processes. Positron emission tomography (PET) is a very powerful technique allowing to study a quite variable range of physiological and biochemical processes in the healthy subjects and in diseases. Apart from its capacity to provide pathophysiological information, PET is also important for the objective assessment of therapeutic efficacy. Initial studies were performed measuring cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (CMRglc) and cerebral blood f
