Megacities are immense sources of air pollutants, with large impacts on air quality and climate. However, emission inventories in many of them still are highly uncertain, particularly in developing countries. Synthetic utility of the Fischer-type carbene complexes of chromium for the preparation of nitrogen-containing compounds is demonstrated. Alkoxy carbene complexes reacted with imines to give (optically active) 3-pyrrolines and beta-methoxy allylic amine derivatives in good yields. The amino carbene complexes reacted with alpha,beta-unsaturated aldehydes to give substituted pyrroles in good yields.

Sludge liquor from the sludge dewatering process has a high ammonia content. In the present study, a lab-scale electrochemical (EC) system with a pair of Ti electrode plates was used for treating the sludge centrate liquor of digested wastewater sludge with a NH4(+) - N content of around 500 mg/L. The sludge liquor had a high salinity due to seawater being used for toilet flushing in Hong Kong. This paper reviews the regulatory history for nitrogen oxides (NOx) pollutant emissions from stationary sources, primarily in coal-fired power plants. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is one of the six criteria pollutants regulated by the 1970 Clean Air Act where National Ambient Air Quality Standards were established to protect public health and welfare. BACKGROUND: Exposure to high ambient levels of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) enhances the bronchial inflammatory reaction to allergen in humans. We tested whether this NO2 effect occurs also in the upper airways.
METHODS: Sixteen allergic subjects with rhinitis and mild asthma were exposed at rest to either purified air or 500 microg/m3 NO2 for 30 minutes, followed 4 hours later by a nasal allergen challenge. An international survey of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels inside indoor ice skating facilities was conducted. One-week average NO2 concentrations were measured inside and outside of 332 ice rinks located in nine countries. A sex difference in nitrogen balance was investigated in 40 adults, 21 men and 19 women, undergoing chemoradiotherapy and marrow transplantation for leukemia and receiving total parenteral nutrition.
