The effect of smoking cessation on quality of life after lung cancer surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of smoking status on quality of life (QoL) after non-small-cell lung cancer surgery with the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) QoL Questionnaire-C30 and LC13. METHODS: QoL was prospectively recorded in 70 consecutive patients undergoing lobectomy or pneumonectomy. Questionnaires were administered preoperatively and 1, 3, 6 and 12 months postoperatively (MPO). RESULTS: Of all patients analysed, nine (13%) were non-smokers, 20 (29%) former smokers, six (8%) recent quitters and 35 (50%) current smokers. All four…

Maternal smoking early in pregnancy is associated with increased risk of short stature and obesity in adult daughters.

We assessed anthropometry in 22,421 adult daughters in association with their mothers' tobacco smoking early in pregnancy (at their first antenatal visit) in Sweden, particularly their risk of short stature and obesity. Adult daughters were grouped by maternal smoking levels during pregnancy: Non-smokers (58.5%), Light smokers (24.1%; smoked 1-9 cigarettes/day), and Heavier smokers (17.4%; smoked ≥10 cigarettes/day). Anthropometry was recorded on the adult daughters at approximately 26.0 years of age. Obesity was defined as BMI ≥30 kg/m2, and short stature as height more than two standard devi…

Impact of smoking intensities on sleep quality in young Saudi males: a comparative study.

This study aimed to compare various components of sleep quality between cigarette smokers of various intensities and non-smokers in young Saudi males. In total, 73 healthy male participants (31 smokers and 42 non-smokers) aged 17-33 years were recruited over three months (August 2018 to October 2018). All participants completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) questionnaire. The smokers were then divided into three groups, according to their Smoking Index* (SI) (Cigarettes Per Day (CPD) X Years of Tobacco Use), into mild, moderate, and heavy smokers. The PSQI was significantly higher …

Cigarette smoking by pregnant women with particular reference to their past and subsequent breast feeding behaviour.

1,790 postpartum women were asked about their smoking habits and baby feeding practices and about a number of other attitudes and physical attributes. For those variables not concerned with baby feeding, our findings generally support previous research; for example, smokers in comparison to non-smokers tended to have more emotional problems, more reproductive failures and babies with lower birth-weights. For baby feeding, we found that smokers tended to have little prior knowledge of breast feeding, favour bottle feeding, have been fed by bottle by their mothers, and wean earlier than non-smok…

Urinary excretion of 3-methyladenine and 3-ethyladenine after controlled exposure to tobacco smoke.

The urinary excretion of the DNA alkylation products 3-methyladenine (3-MeAde) and 3-ethyladenine (3-EtAde) after controlled exposure to cigarette smoke over a period of 4 days was determined by competitive radioimmunoassay after separation by HPLC. Twenty-four hour urine samples were collected from five smokers and five non-smokers. Days 1 and 3 (control days) were without smoking, on days 2 and 4 smokers consumed 24 cigarettes each within 8 h in an unventilated room (45 m3) in the presence of non-smokers. Average levels of carbon monoxide during exposure were 15-20 p.p.m., 2.8-3.5 mg/m3 of r…

Lung disease in never-smokers with severe α1-antitrypsin deficiency: the EARCO Registry.

BACKGROUND: Although the role of smoking as a risk factor for emphysema in α1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD) is well known, never-smokers with severe AATD may also develop lung disease, ranging from mild asymptomatic disease to severe emphysema. METHODS: We performed a cross-sectional and observational study to analyse the characteristics of the population of never-smoker severe AATD (genotype) individuals of the international EARCO Registry. RESULTS: 914 PI*ZZ individuals were analysed, of whom 472 (51.7%) were active or former smokers and 442 (48.3%) were never-smokers. Never-smokers were o

Neuropsychological performance in patients with schizophrenia and controls as a function of cigarette smoking status.

Schizophrenia is associated with many neurocognitive deficits, some of which are improved by nicotine and cigarette smoking. To better understand the relationship between smoking and cognitive function in schizophrenia, cross-sectional assessment of neuropsychological performance as a function of smoking status (smoker or non-smoker) and smoking history (current, former or never-smoker) in clinically stable outpatients with schizophrenia and controls was evaluated. Subjects (n=140) were divided into subgroups on the basis of self-report and biochemical verification of smoking history. Current

Impact of Smoking on Outcomes of HPV-related Oropharyngeal Cancer Treated with Primary Radiation or Surgery.

PURPOSE: Tobacco exposure is known to affect the biological behavior of human papilloma virus (HPV)-positive oropharyngeal carcinoma (OPC) with intermediate outcomes relative to tumors that are HPV associated with no smoking exposure and smoking-related HPV-negative tumors. We aim to evaluate the impact of smoking on the outcomes of patients with HPV-associated locally advanced OPC when stratified by treatment modality. METHODS AND MATERIALS: A retrospective chart review was undertaken for 352 patients with known p16-overexpressing locally advanced OPC who were managed with curative-intent th

Smoking and anal high-risk human papillomavirus DNA loads in HIV-positive men who have sex with men.

HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) have an increased risk for anal human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, anal high-grade intraepithelial lesions (HSIL), and anal cancer. Smoking is associated with abnormal anal cytology and with an increased risk for anal cancer. We collected 3736 intraanal swabs from 803 HIV-positive MSM who participated in an anal cancer screening program between October 2003 and August 2014. HPV prevalence, anal cytology and HPV DNA load of high-risk (HR) HPV-types 16, 18, 31 and 33 of non-smokers and smokers were compared. HPV-typing was performed by alpha-HPV ge…

Using expired air carbon monoxide to determine smoking status during pregnancy: preliminary identification of an appropriately sensitive and specific cut-point.

BACKGROUND: Measurement of carbon monoxide in expired air samples (ECO) is a non-invasive, cost-effective biochemical marker for smoking. Cut points of 6ppm-10ppm have been established, though appropriate cut-points for pregnant woman have been debated due to metabolic changes. This study assessed whether an ECO cut-point identifying at least 90% of pregnant smokers, and misidentifying fewer than 10% of non-smokers, could be established. METHODS: Pregnant women (N=167) completed a validated self-report smoking assessment, a urine drug screen for cotinine (UDS), and provided an expired air sam…

Tobacco advertisement seems to likewise appeal to smokers and non-smokers, clarifying the potential danger especially for young non-smokers.
