Public health emergencies: nurses' recommendations for effective actions.

During a public health emergency such as an influenza pandemic or a bioterrorism attack, nurses may be at risk for exposure to lethal infectious diseases when caring for victims. The aim of this study was to identify interventions nurses believe will support their ability to cope during public health emergencies. A qualitative research design was used with 33 nurses from designated bioterrorism-receiving hospitals. Nurses recommended adequate protective equipment, education, drills, accessible information and available content experts, and available administrators. Other recommendations includ

Comparison of sole nurse and team-delivered community clozapine services for people with treatment-resistant schizophrenia.

AIM: To compare sole nurse and doctor-led multidisciplinary team delivery of community clozapine services for people with treatment-resistant schizophrenia. BACKGROUND: Around 20% of people with schizophrenia are treatment resistant and fail to respond to front line medications. Clozapine, a second-line treatment, has potentially serious side effects requiring regular monitoring. Different models of community clozapine services are emerging in the British National Health Service, but there is little evidence about which is best. DESIGN: Questionnaire survey of service users. METHODS: All pa

Nurse Roles in Virtual Care Within Team-Based Primary Care: Qualitative Findings From a Multiple Case Study in Two Canadian Jurisdictions.

INTRODUCTION: Canadians, particularly those in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and Nova Scotia (NS), face ongoing challenges in accessing primary care. To address this concern, many jurisdictions have adopted team-based primary care that enables nurses, physicians, and other providers to collaborate in delivering care. Virtual care has been widely integrated to promote efficiency and quality across team-based primary care. Nurses in primary care teams (i.e., nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses) deliver care virtually; however, details of their role enactment remain

Mobile Simulation: Expanding Forensic Nursing Education to Underserved Regions.

BACKGROUND: Forensic nursing bridges the health care and legal systems by delivering person-centered, trauma-informed care to survivors of violence while collecting samples that may be used as evidence. Maintaining competence requires ongoing evaluation of clinical and communication skills, especially for those in underserved regions, who face barriers such as isolation, limited resources, and education gaps. METHOD: A forensic mobile simulation unit was developed to deliver onsite experiential education. Three simulation training sessions were conducted across rural regions, with 2- to 3-day

Effective Communication During and After an Amniotic Fluid Embolism.

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a life-threatening complication occurring during pregnancy, labor, or birth and is characterized by sudden cardio-respiratory collapse and disseminated intravascular coagulopathy. Amniotic fluid embolism is unpredictable, sudden, and complex. Amniotic fluid embolism is one of the causes of peripartum maternal mortality and morbidity in the United States. Nurses and other health care professionals responding to severe maternal events, such as an AFE, may experience trauma, which can lead to reduced executive functions, and challenges with memory, organization, p

An interdisciplinary street outreach program to engage vulnerable neighbors in care.

Those experiencing poverty, homelessness, or behavioral health disorders are difficult to engage and maintain in health care services. These vulnerable populations experience unique barriers to engagement in health care services, which fuel health inequity. We need innovative approaches to address this need. This paper discusses the reciprocal relationship between a community center and a local university, which led to a street outreach program that provides a dynamic interprofessional experience for nursing, medical, and social work students and helps connect vulnerable populations to care. Occupational hazards in female ballet dancers. Advocate for a forgotten population.

1. Personal, economical, psychological, and physical factors increase a ballet dancer's stress, which can result in a higher risk for injuries. 2. Ballet dancers experience injuries to the foot, ankle, knee, hip, or back. The constant fear of injuries is universal among dancers because injuries can lead to permanent disability and the end of their ballet career. 3. Although early treatment of injuries is critical, there are multiple barriers to receiving treatment. Some of the barriers include misunderstanding from the health care community, cost of treatment, time constraints, fear of unemplo
