Implementation of nursing services in community corrections: A community-academic partnership.

Persons who are incarcerated (PWAI) suffer from a disproportionately higher number of physical and mental health conditions. While most jails and prisons provide onsite healthcare, community correctional centers often do not and accessing community healthcare is challenging due to insurance issues, inadequate health literacy, mistrust, and long waits for appointments. A registered nurse-led wellness clinic provides a viable solution to addressing the healthcare needs of PWAI in a community correctional setting. Through a community-academic partnership between a college of nursing and two commu

[Maintaining Intimate Relationships After Total Penectomy: A Nursing Care Perspective].

In Eastern cultures, sexuality and intimate relations are typically regarded as delicate issues and generally ignored in treatment processes, which may cause physical, psychological, and even spiritual suffering throughout the process of recovery. This article discusses a case report involving a 42-year-old male patient, who was diagnosed with penile cancer and subsequently received a total penectomy and urethral reconstruction. Nursing care was provided from May 24 to June 15, 2023. The information was gathered using observation, interviews, and chart reviews. In addition to a surgical wound

Risk of suicide and self-harm in university students entering different university programs - a national register-based cohort study in Sweden.

PURPOSE: It is not known whether the elevated suicide risk in certain occupations, such as health care professionals, is partly attributable to a selection of individuals with prior vulnerability. We aimed to determine the risk of suicide and self-harm already in students entering different university programs. METHODS: We used national registers to identify 621,218 Swedish residents aged 18-39 years with registration for a university program 1993-2013. Outcomes were suicide and self-harm within three years. We applied logistic regression analyses to calculate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confide

Implementation and Operational Research: Implementation of Multiple Point-of-Care Testing in 2 HIV Antiretroviral Treatment Clinics in South Africa.

BACKGROUND: A plethora of point-of-care (POC) tests exist in the HIV and tuberculosis diagnostic pipeline which require rigorous evaluation to ensure performance in the field. The accuracy and feasibility of nurse-operated multidisciplinary-POC testing for HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) initiation/monitoring was evaluated. METHODS: Random HIV-positive adult patients presenting at 2 treatment clinics in South Africa for ART initiation/monitoring were consented and enrolled. POCT was performed by a dedicated nurse on a venipuncture specimen; Pima (CD4), HemoCue (hemoglobin), Reflotron (alanin

Dexamethasone programs lower fatty acid absorption and reduced PPAR-γ and fat/CD36 expression in the jejunum of the adult rat offspring.

The progeny of rats born and breastfed by mothers receiving dexamethasone (DEX) during pregnancy exhibits permanent reduction in body weight and adiposity but the precise mechanisms related to this programming are not fully understood. In order to clarify this issue, the present study investigated key aspects of lipoprotein production and lipid metabolism by the liver and the intestine that would explain the reduced adiposity seen in the adult offspring exposed to DEX in utero. Female Wistar rats were treated with DEX (0.1 mg/kg/day) between the 15th and the 21st days of pregnancy, while contr

CNS tuberculosis: a review and illustration from an autopsy case.

An estimated one-third of the world's population (2 billion people) is infected with the tubercle bacilli (TB), which is estimated to cause 6% of all deaths worldwide. Despite there being a decline in the incidence of tuberculosis seen in Europe, there are still some countries in the rest of the world where the estimated number of new cases is very high. When a person presents with persistent fever with or without neurological symptoms, the diagnosis of TB cannot be excluded. We present a case report of a 26-year-old male patient, who died of CNS tuberculosis. Such case studies will help keep

Smallpox and New York City's smallpox hospital.

Threatened use of the smallpox virus in bioterrorist attacks recently prompted national concerns in the United States. Smallpox, the "speckled monster," was known in antiquity. In 1856, New York City opened its first hospital devoted to caring for victims of smallpox. Essentially, the hospital isolated and quarantined patients on Blackwell's Island, located in the East River between Manhattan and Queens. After the hospital closed about 1875, the facility became a training school for female and male nurses. In the mid 1950s, the building was abandoned. Today, the ruins of the smallpox hospital

Influence of short-term relocation and male exposure on sexual receptivity and reproduction in artificially inseminated lactating doe rabbits.

A study was conducted to evaluate the effect of short-term relocation and male exposure on receptivity rate, kindling rate and total born per litter in lactating does under an artificial insemination (AI) programme. Thirty-two, 2-month-old New Zealand White rabbits were randomly allocated to one of four treatments: (1) relocation and male exposure; (2) relocation without male exposure; (3) no relocation with male exposure; (4) no relocation without male exposure (control). Relocation and male exposure were done 8-10 h before the time of service. First insemination was when does reached 3200 g

Exploration of a nurse practitioner-led phase two cardiac rehabilitation programme on attendance and compliance.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the impact of a nurse practitioner-led phase two cardiac rehabilitation and secondary prevention programme on attendance and compliance. BACKGROUND: Despite strong evidence for the benefits of cardiac rehabilitation, attendance/completion rates remain low. Nurse practitioner-led services have been reported as more effective than physician-led services at increasing patient adherence to evidence-based recommendations. However, nurse practitioner-led programmes are uncommon and there appears to be no current evidence examining the impact of these programmes on a

The impact of COVID-19 on illegitimate tasks across occupations in Sweden: a longitudinal observational study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic led to major societal changes. Although the pandemic has significantly impacted the way we work, few studies have examined its effects on the prevalence of illegitimate tasks, i.e., tasks that are perceived as either unnecessary or unreasonable. Occupational groups were likely affected differently. This study investigates the prevalence of illegitimate tasks for registered nurses, teachers, IT specialists, and construction workers in pre-pandemic (2018), early-pandemic (2020), late-pandemic (2022), and post-pandemic (2024) periods. METHODS: Data were collecte

A qualitative exploration of STI partner notification services delivery models among key stakeholders in rural southwestern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive STI care requires not only patient treatment but STI partner notification (PN) and evaluation to prevent ongoing STI transmission and reinfection. In rural, southwestern Uganda, we explored healthcare practitioners' views on three STI PN models that focused on task-shifting to non-physician practitioners to inform the development of a novel STI PN services delivery system. METHODS: From September to November 2023, we conducted individual in-depth interviews with 32 participants from 4 categories (8 participants from each category): patients with a self-reported histo

Men as Midwifery Professionals: A Scoping Review.

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION: Midwives provide skilled, primary, reproductive, and sexual health care to women, adolescent girls, and infants throughout the perinatal period, promoting health and safeguarding against obstetric emergencies and maternal and infant mortality. In many cultures, midwifery has been a predominantly female profession. However, in emerging research, the proportion of male midwives is growing to augment shortages of female midwives, prompting a need for further research that explores the contributions of male midwives in maternal and child health. The objective of this scopi

Gender Differences in Palliative Care Experience and Quality Perceptions Among Cancer Patients in Saudi Arabia: Implications for Nursing Practice.

Gender shapes healthcare experiences, yet its influence on palliative care (PC) in Middle Eastern contexts remains under-researched. Understanding how male and female patients differently experience PC is essential for delivering gender-sensitive nursing care. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 200 cancer patients recruited from healthcare facilities in Saudi Arabia. PC quality perceptions were measured using the Palliative Care Experience and Quality Questionnaire (PCEQQ), assessing communication, symptom management, emotional support, and overall quality. Independent-samples t-tests

Six years' experience of total parenteral nutrition in children with hematological malignancies at a single center: management, efficacy, and complications.

Total parenteral nutrition (TPN) is an important issue in supportive care of children with leukemia. We studied 131 consecutive children (87 male, 44 female) with hematological malignancies who received TPN at our center from July 1984 to July 1990 with the aim of evaluating the efficacy and complications of TPN. The use of TPN was associated with lack of any alteration of the anthropometric indexes used in this study. The complications were prevalently metabolic, generally mild, and easily controlled. Laboratory monitoring of nutritional status during TPN is probably of little value in this s
