[Digestive and nutritional problems of children with cerebral palsy].

Digestive and nutritional problems of children with cerebral palsy put them at risk of malnutrition. Identification of these problems through measurements of weight, height, and body composition is essential. Feeding difficulties may be caused by a combination of oral and digestive problems, such as swallowing difficulties, gastroesophageal reflux, and constipation. If oral feeding is difficult or unsafe, a nasogastric tube or gastrostomy may be necessary. Once the feeding regimen has been established, energy needs must be assessed on an individual basis. This nutritional management involves a

Clinical response to short-term nasogastric feeding in infants with gastroesophageal reflux and growth failure.

When conventional treatment with upright positioning and thickened feedings fails to control vomiting associated with gastroesophageal reflux (GER) of infancy, malnutrition and growth failure may result. If this occurs, fundoplication is usually recommended. In this study, 12 infants with growth failure associated with GER were given a trial of short-term (11.1 +/- SE 1.6 days) continuous-drip nasogastric (NG) feedings prior to surgical referral. Five of 10 infants for whom long-term follow-up (3-12 months) was obtained showed immediate weight gain, cessation of vomiting, and long-term resolut

Nutrition in adolescence.

This review discusses five questions concerning nutrition in adolescence. Do adolescents have special nutritional needs? What are the recommended dietary intakes? What do adolescent schoolchildren eat? What nutritional disorders occur at this age? The prevalence of iron deficiency anaemia, rickets, coeliac disease, iodine deficiency, dental caries, weight disorders, zinc deficiency and pellagra are discussed. What is the role of school meals or other food supplementation programmes?

Artificial nutrition in cancer patients: which route, what composition?

The state of art of artificial nutrition in depleted cancer patients is reviewed in brief. Because cancer cachexia cannot be equated to simple nutrient deficiency but is due instead to complex metabolic abnormalities, the nutritional effects of total parenteral (TPN) and enteral (EN) nutrition are more limited than in starving subjects. TPN and EN usually prevent further deterioration of the nutritional status, although they are not able to fully reverse a state of depletion. There is evidence that quantitative and qualitative modulation of certain nutrients may obtain better results because o

Total parenteral nutrition in surgical patients.

Malnutrition is common in the hospitalized surgical patient. There is a strong association between improved nutritional status and a favorable postoperative recovery, while malnutrition has an adverse effect on surgical outcome (Driscoll & Blackburn, 1990; Souba, 1997). Advances in providing parenteral nutrition have had a positive impact on nutrition care of these patients and will be reviewed in this article.

Nutrition therapy for the cancer patient.

Malnutrition commonly occurs in cancer and adversely affects the quality of life and survival of patients. It is caused by a variety of factors, including decreased food intake, adverse effects from anticancer treatment, and wasteful metabolic processes. Over the past 2 decades, there have been major advances in methods and techniques of feeding patients with cancer and other disease. Special diets can be helpful in the treatment of a variety of conditions, some of which are outlined in Table 1. Enteral feeding is developing rapidly because endoscopic techniques have made it simpler to place f

Parenteral feeding in patients with carcinoma of the esophagus treated by surgery: energy and nitrogen requirements.

Nutritional assessment and requirements of patients with carcinoma of the esophagus treated by surgery are based on three series of patients: 1) the nutritional state of 22 assessed on admission, using recognized nutritional markers, the majority of whom were found nutritionally deficient; notably 72% were in negative nitrogen (N) balance. 2) Another series of 52 patients was based on the relationship between dysphagia and loss of weight and negative N balance; 48% were severely dysphagic and had lost an average 8.5% of their usual weight, and 89% were in negative N balance. Thus, the associat

Impact of prenatal and postnatal nutrition on pain modulation and stress response in offspring.

Nutrition is an environmental risk factor playing a pivotal role in predisposing to various diseases. Especially prenatal nutrition induces adaptation processes, known as early programming, leading to the alteration of fetal growth and brain development. Our previous study focused on the relation between prenatal nutritional factors and neurodevelopmental disorders. This narrative review analyses instead how prenatal and postnatal nutrition may impact many other pathways, for example, pain modulation and stress response. The alteration of these pathways is mediated by modification of the activ

Practical Guide to Nutritional Assessment in CKD: Current Tools, Emerging Technologies, and Future Directions.

Nutritional disorders and malnutrition are common in people living with CKD, and the provision of individualized dietary advice is an established therapy for the management of CKD. The complex relationship between nutrition and outcomes in CKD necessitates a comprehensive understanding of assessment tools and management strategies. The nutritional status of individuals with CKD is affected by the progression of CKD as well as treatments provided. In turn, careful management of the nutritional status of individuals with CKD can attenuate progression of kidney failure, reduce CKD-related complic

Regional Overview on Maternal Nutrition and Examples of Health System Programme and Policy Responses: Asia and the Pacific.

BACKGROUND: The double burden of malnutrition in Asia and the Pacific is driving a renewed focus on maternal malnutrition. SUMMARY: Though adverse consequences of maternal malnutrition have been long recognized, there is slow progress in addressing nutritional problems of women/adolescent girls. Coverage and quality of current maternal nutrition interventions, mostly delivered through antenatal care programmes vary across countries, and are often sub-optimum. Further, despite a marked increase in overweight and obesity in women of reproductive age, at present, most programmes are focused on u

Parenteral nutrition in pediatric patients.

Protein, calorie, fluid, fat, and micronutrient requirements of pediatric patients are reviewed, as are methods of nutritional assessment and complications associated with the use of parenteral nutrition in these patients. In general, preterm infants and neonates require greater per-kilogram amounts of protein, calories, fluid, and micronutrients than older children. In addition, preterm infants and neonates have deficiencies in enzymes that metabolize certain amino acids, making otherwise nonessential amino acids essential. These unique protein needs have been addressed in amino acid formulat

[Role of MRI in the diagnostic of Gayet Wernicke's encephalopathy (GWE) after gastrectomy and parenteral nutrition].

GWE is rarely described after gastric surgery following parenteral nutrition. The case of a 33 years old female with no previous alcohol addiction, who presented severe neurological disorders after reoperation for postoperative peritonitis and total parenteral nutrition is reported. She was operated 8 days before for gastric leiomyoma and underwent partial gastrectomy. The management has consisted of a tracheal intubation and welfare ventilation. The brain CT scan was normal and the brain MRI made the diagnostic of Gayet Wernicke's encephalopathy with typical signs. An inner, bilateral and sym

Nutrition in Pediatric Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).

Lifestyle change, including weight loss in children with overweight and obesity, through intensive health behavior and lifestyle treatment (IHBLT) is one of the main pillars in the management of pediatric metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). Approximately 10% of school-aged children in the United States-and an even higher percentage of children with obesity-are affected by MASLD. The stigma, combined with peer and society pressure to maintain a "Работает" weight, as it pertains to MASLD, has led a percentage of affected children to adapt restrictive patterns of eati

Early hypophosphatemia in very low birth weight preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Refeeding Syndrome (RFS) is a well-known group of symptoms which occur after the introduction of enteral or parenteral nutrition in undernourished patients. Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) is the equivalent of postnatal RFS following the beginning of feeding. The aggressive parenteral nutrition of neonates with very low birth weight (VLBW) resulting from the termination of intrauterine transplacental nutrition is a source of biochemical disorders. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to analyze metabolic disorders in preterm infants during the 1st week of life and to deter

Liver disease in patients qualified for home parenteral nutrition - a consequence of a failure to adjust RTU bags in the primary centre?

UNLABELLED: If planned improperly, parenteral nutrition may result in a number of severe metabolic complications caused by insufficient or excessive delivery of individual nutrients. One of the most common and the most dangerous complication is parenteral nutrition-associated liver disease (PNALD). Such a complication may also result from using RTU (ready-to-use) bags that are not adjusted adequately to individual patients. The aim of the study was the analysis of prevalence and determining the cause of liver disease in patients who had been receiving parenteral nutrition in primary centres pr
