Candida auris is a multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen that is associated with nosocomial outbreaks in patients with extensive health care exposure and treatment outside the United States. The Ohio Department of Health recommends C auris screening in high-risk patients. However, this can be operationally difficult for many health care facilities. This report describes a C auris and carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales inpatient screening program done in collaboration with state public health.

This article presents a case study of the successful anesthesia management in the birth of quadruplets at Aultman Hospital in Canton, Ohio. A review of recent literature is also provided. With the increasing use of fertility drugs, multiple births will inevitably cease to be viewed as a rare phenomenon. Anesthesia practitioners will increasingly be presented with the challenge of planning for the management of these patients. The authors believe an anesthetic plan must be integrated into a multidisciplinary team approach to achieve successful management of parturient and neonates.

Blastomyces is an endemic fungal pathogen found in regions of North America. It is endemic in the Ohio and Mississippi river valleys, New York, Wisconsin, Colorado, Texas, Kansas, Nebraska, and other regions of the United States. It is common in Canada, mainly Ontario and Manitoba. Here, we report a case of tracheal and pulmonary blastomycosis. Interestingly, this case presented as an unexpected diagnosis as part of a malignancy workup. To our knowledge, this is only the second case of tracheal blastomycosis reported in the literature.

Wild Eastern Gray Squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) rehabilitated at a Midwestern facility, the Ohio Wildlife Center, were experiencing an increased mortality rate due to unknown respiratory illness in 2022-2023. A qPCR test was developed for B. bronchiseptica to test symptomatic animals. Though 65 individuals were tested, all tests were found to be negative for B. bronchiseptica. This negative result strongly indicates that the mortalities were caused by aspiration pneumonia or some other unknown pathogen.

STUDY DESIGN: Case report of autonomic dysreflexia presenting with transient aphasia in a subject with C4 tetraplegia.
OBJECTIVES: To report a rare case of autonomic dysreflexia.
SETTING: Rehabilitation Service, The Ohio State University, USA.
CASE REPORT: A 21-year-old man with a C4 spinal cord injury (ASIA B) developed aphasia associated with autonomic dysreflexia. He was treated with an adrenergic blocking agent.
CONCLUSION: Autonomic dysreflexia manifested by a transient aphasia and seizures is uncommon.

Isolates of Legionella from 98 patients with Legionnaires' disease hospitalized in Columbus, Ohio, USA between 1991 through 1995 were tested for antimicrobial susceptibility to macrolides and quinolones using the Etest. Most (87%) isolates were Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1. All isolates tested remain susceptible to erythromycin, azithromycin, clarithromycin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, and levofloxacin. In vitro susceptibility testing of Legionella to representative macrolides and quinolones should be considered to detect the emergence of resistant isolates.

Elevated temperature landfills (ETLFs) are municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills that have been impacted by subsurface exothermic reactions (SERs) and display unusual gas and leachate composition. Leachate quantity and quality data were analyzed to identify indicators of a SER at an ETLF in Ohio, USA. ETLF leachate generation increased from 2.04 to 14.4 m3/hectare-day (218 to 1,539 gallons/acre-day), peaking 16 months after the reaction was first noticed. Investigations of 2 cases of high mortality in cull sows and feeder pigs from a buying station in Ohio and cull sows at an abattoir in Tennessee were conducted at the Iowa State University Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.
